For me, it's not just about aesthetics, it's about the general choice of words and writing tone, which is just inadequate.
The opinions expressed may be based on valid points, but the writing is just plain in bad style.
Which is deliciously ironic, considering the elitist nature of the site.

I hate to think what you guys think of my bad spelling and grammer which is more akin to a 10 y/o rather then a grown adult's. But then again Im not one of the intellgentsia, i'm a peasent who spells how I speak, and thats with a thick Yorkshire accent coloured by the fact that I had a stutter and a speach indepiment as a child which causes me to misspronouce most of my wordsIf all you have to criticize is his choice of punctuation you probably shouldn't be criticizing at all.

While there is some intresting vg articles on that site, I do wish he would move on from his art games super rant. (even if I do agree with him in thinking art games are pieces of shit and laugh at the concept of them been placed on a pedestal)
While im no Icyclem fan or worshipper, having joined this forum after he departed, I do wish he was still a member here. As I bet he was a character who due to riding a very tall horse was perfect for trolling

Golden Sun, Earthbound and Planescape: Torment are beyond decent. Baldur's Gate series is also top-notch. I love the early FFs, especially III, and the materia system in FFVII made me really happy. Mass Effect was alright. Grandia II is supreme.

There is this thread, however. It kinda makes this one obsolete in the first place.

Re: Actually decent RPGs
If there's one minor thing in life that I miss enjoying, its the RPG. I used to love these things but I just can't stick with them anymore. I suppose it's for the best as they eat up lots of time, but most of the games I feel heavy nostalgia for are JRPGs. Here's the few that mean a lot to me and I would recommend to anyone who can still enjoy this kind of game:
Chrono Cross
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII*
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
Lunar
Grandia
Skies of Arcadia
*This one I cannot defend as its loaded with problems. The story makes no sense, the characters are douchebags and its way too easy, but goddamn did this game come at the right time for me and boy did I have fun with it. Awesome pacing (never boring), fun side quests (the card game and GF collecting), great music, some cool scenarios (the time compression was a wtf but it looked cool and I like when FF games get trippy at the end of the game). This game gets shat on like no other and perhaps deservedly so, but it's still real to me dammit!

Re: Actually decent RPGs
I've been getting into JRPGs a bit this year (FF13, Resonance of Fate, Lost Odyssey). All it took is a 10 year break from them. A few more and I'll need another 10 years though.
Seems like there have been a lot of bratty pamphlet-carrying insomnia readers this year. Like 4-5 of them. Please don't ever link to that site again.

Fewer the better. And what's worse is, they have have this strange compulsion that they have to be right, and they keep on arguing after the rest of us are tired of it. Oddly enough, this sort of behavior was exactly what got icycalm banned way back when.Rob wrote:Seems like there have been a lot of bratty pamphlet-carrying insomnia readers this year. If you read a bad review of a game that you really like, it won't get to you. If you make angry posts and threaten the person who wrote the review (loljimsterling), then that means that you don't like the game as much as you convince yourself that you do.NTSC-J wrote:This game gets shat on like no other and perhaps deservedly so, but it's still real to me dammit!
That said, have you watched Spoony's review of the game? It's pretty hilarious, and very bile-fueled, but it didn't make me hate the game.

Are you going to let it drop or no?
First you accuse me of "taking the Internet seriously", which is a retarded accusation as I restrict myself primarily to intelligent websites that are meant to be taken seriously. I was under the impression that, barring obvious joke posts, this was one of them.
Then you accuse me of "being offended by people having DIFFERING TASTES" which is so ludicrously unfounded I won't even bother rebuking it.
And now instead of responding to me directly you're just taking jabs, desperate to get the LAST WORD so you can feel you've accomplished something.
Are you done?

Re: Actually decent RPGs
On topic, have any of you played The World Ends With You? Very linear, but the plot was really great and there was a simply huge variety of attacks. Too bad the battle system eventually came down to buttonmashing.

Buttonmashing? More like mindless rapidfire tapping, slashing, blowing, all-around murder of the hardware.RNGmaster wrote:On topic, have any of you played The World Ends With You? I loved The World Ends With You. The characters got on my nerves a lot but the art design, soundtrack, and battle system were great. I wish the imprinting mechanic were more fleshed out, though.
Adjustable difficulty was also pretty cool, kept things from being a tedious grind.
Re: Actually decent RPGs
Wow, what is going on here?
My other all-time favorites :
Legend of Mana (PS1)
Wild Card (Wonderswan)
Eternal Sonata (360)
Final Fantasy IV (SNES/Wonderswan/DS)
Lost Odyssey (360)
Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1)
King's Field 4 (PS2)
TESIV Oblivion (PC/PS3)
One of my all-time favorites. I don't think it's THAT buttonmashy. The top screen maybe, but not the bottom one. Though I guess it really all depends on which pins you're using.RNGmaster wrote:On topic, have any of you played The World Ends With You? Re: Actually decent RPGs
My favorite RPGs are really shooter/RPG hybrids. The sense of immersion in these games can't be matched in my opinion.
Deus Ex 1 was simply amazing, probably my favorite single player game/story ever made. Especially recommend it if you like conspiracy theories or the cyberpunk genre.
New Vegas is great, the feel is a lot closer to the old Fallout games. FO3 felt sort of like The Elder Scrolls: Capital Wasteland to me, but NV sets it right. Like most Bethesda RPGs it's much better with mods. Even if you never complete the story missions and just wander the Mojave wasteland this game sucks you in.
On the other hand, no games can get me as nostalgic as Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII (honorable mention to IX). I can't stand most JRPGs, but the stories, artwork, and music made these ones unforgettable to me.

You are committing a major act of treason. Remove your armament promptly then surrender.
Re: Actually decent RPGs
I know I keep mentioning Etrian Odyssey 3, but for those who have played the first two and not bothered with the third installation; EO3 is a MUCH better game. Best RPG I've played since Nocturne.
