Maybe a Kirby shmup.

Post by raigon50 »

I downloaded a couple of Kirby games on to my Wii the other day. I unlocked the last game on Kirby Super Star and reached the final boss. Part of the boss was in the form of a shmup (like most final boss battles in Kirby), which played out pretty smooth. It got me thinking though, I'd like to see a Kirby shmup made. I'm doing this thread to share the thought and to see what everyone else thinks about the idea. I think it would cool to fly around on the warpstar, blasting away flying Waddle Dees and what-not.

If memory serves there's a shooter section in the upcoming "Epic Yarn" too.

Kirby's Dreamland 3's final boss is similar (it's also a better game than KSS and I don't care what anybody says).

In the latest trailer for the new Kirby game there is also a shooter level.

I also played a Kirby shooter made in Game Maker. It was not very good, but it could have been a lot worse.

Some one who understands! :D Kirby DL3 is the best.

I guess I should do some more looking up on Epic Yarn then.

Well, Kirby Pinball Land is the best, but, yes, DL3 is super nice.

Dream Land 3 is one of the worst main Kirby games. What in the world are you people smoking?

G-Darius or Einhander is what I imagine a real Kirby shoot 'em up to play like.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

It's amazing. Awesome graphics/art, great atmosphere, great music, tons of variety, ludicrously adorable, not a *complete* pushover and every level has it's own little story. One of the best platformers ever.

DL3 is the most aesthetically and artistically amazing Kirby game, easily. I didn't appreciate it fully when it was new but at some point I went back and just completely fell in love.

Kirby could actually make an amazing shmup. Especially if it was made by Treasure. Simply bliss.

I got bored during Math class, so I started sketching out an idea of what a Kirby shmup would be like. (yep, I comee up with coll and original ideas from shmups when I get bored).
Basically, it would play similar to Darius, but instead of shooting secondary diagonal shots, Kirby would use the different abilities acquired by the enemies. I figured since it would still be a Kirby game, it would have to keep the same mechanics as the rest of the series. Kirby can suck up enemies and take the abilities. Some abilities would have to be changed however to be usable in a shmup format.
Example: (I'm using abilities from Super Star. That's where all the awesome ones are.)
Mirror Kirby would create a temporary shield in front that deflects enemy bullets
Spark Kirby would shoot a Lightning similar to what you'd see in Daioh
Plasma would be kinda like an R-Type wave cannon (not very original, but it does fit)
Bomb would drop missiles
When the bullets shoot bullets, you know you have a problem.

I loved the shmup segment in Super Star. Even though it was VERY easy.

I've just had a brainstorm on setup for a Kirby shmup.

Use a stick and two button setup. Button A is the fire button, full auto as normal Kirby. Button B inhales enemies, which are automatically swallowed, so no button pressing is needed. Normal enemies won't do anything when swallowed; powerup enemies may have to be damaged before being inhaled (think gold enemies in G-Darius).

When powered up, tapping A gives a stream of bullets while holding A gives a charge shot which can have various effects and charge times depending on the ability. Pressing B will use a secondary attack specific to the ability. Pressing A and B together will discharge the ability as a huge star that cancels bullets and does huge damage, sort of a bomb.

When Kirby has an ability, hitting a bullet will cause him to lose that ability. If a normal Kirby is struck, he loses a life.

I suppose to follow the platformers, getting junk food would be the primary scoring system.

Kirby is a series full of fun ideas and good gameplay. I think it could translate well to a full shmup game. It's no stranger than Mario in a racing game. Let HAL and any of the really good, creative shmup devs develop it. Treasure is good. I also think Milestone's comicbook pastel designs might fit well with a Kirby theme.

Damn, I wanna go play Kirby games now!

Kinda funny since that's EXACTLY what I was thinking. The only difference would be that Kirby would have a health bar, so the player would die so often. I was thinking of it to be more manic. The food idea was also how I thought for scoring. Destroying an enemy would drop junk food which would automatically be grabbed. Scoring would be c=a100+b50, with "c" being total points, "a" being amount of food, and "b" being remaining HP. I just finished blue prints and concepts for a Kirby Shmup (took 4 pages, front and back) If I get them scanned, I'll try to post them.
Also, for bosses, I need help coming up with them. I got:
level 1: Wispy Willow (mid - Big bomb guy) sorry, having trouble remembering names.
level 2: Kracko (mid - mini Kracko)
level 3: Whale guy (mid - Mambo)
level 4: Mecha Titan (mid - Mecha Lobster) I might switch the two around
level 5: Dynablade (mid - Dynablade Chicks)
level 6: King Dedede (no mid-boss)
level 7: The Halberd (mid - Metaknight's henchmen)
Final: Darkeye

I don't like the set up, levels 3 and 4 need changed.
Level 7 boss is Metaknight's ship, which the mid-bosses are the level, beat all the henchmen then you have to destroy the Halberd. Destroying the Halberd is basically level 3 of R-Type Final put into boss form.
(note, if I can compare something to another game, I will.)

I have considered sending the idea to HAL or something, but I don't know if they would do anything with it, but it would be pretty awesome to see a Kirby shmup made.

End of long post.

My friend suggested to me earlier that there should be Abillity combining, like in Kirby64. It's a cool idea, but I don't know if it's right. It would probably make the game to easy...

That would make things too complex. A lot of unique powers that can be grabbed by themselves is less complicated than combining things, I think.

I have my own ideas and even a name for my personal project: Kirby's Heavy Metal. I thought it would be populated with richly-animated sprites a la Metal Slug. Very well-animated, lots of fiery explosions and lots of bad guys going "ooog" and "aaaaargh" and whatnot.

Gameplay-wise, you had two weapons: a machine gun in the wing root of a TEENY airplane and whatever Kirby could copy. Since you probably shouldn't be maneuvering unnecessarily in a shmup, instead of diving to swallow you hit the inhale button and to spit you hit the gun button. You get a non-segmented health bar like in Super Star. Controls involve pushing towards the right to speed up and doing the opposite to slow down. You know, like in Armored Police Unit Gallop/Cosmic Cop.

Giga Wing: Kirby

Reflect Force (Kirby inhales bullets and sends them back at the enemy)
Force Bomb (Kirby inhales bullets to charge a meter. Depending on the bullet type inhaled it charges the meter faster. Can set off early, less damage and causes chaining similar to Twinkle Star Sprites.)
Bomb (Kirby sends a clone of himself in the form of a glowing red Kirby, first enemy it hits makes the clone explode and any other enemies caught in the area of effect explode.

And of course, the Kirby art style.
You could just play Giga Wing and pretend Kirby is in it as well.

I don't profess myself to be an expert, but I do my research.

Giga Wing? Hate to say it but that is too simplistic a model. Sure, the original Dream Land had no copying, but Kirby has had copying ever since and now it's vital (Epic Yarn being an exception). The Darius and Einhander models are more like the groundwork upon which a Kirby shmup can really grow.

Even then it is still an incomplete model because you can't take the attack with you. Copy powers are usually not one-shot items you pick up and discard; you use them as long as it suits you throughout a level.

I agree. Besides, basing a game idea directly off of one source without much added can be the death of intelligence. I like GigaWing, but as said, it's to simple to be a Kirby game.
After all though, I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get this game made...

Compared to other game projects this is probably actually quite realistic. A 2D game populated by sprites, scrolling backgrounds and what-have-you is possibly the simplest realistic game project proposal one could put forward. Adding this wrinkle might make things more complicated, but it is still feasible as an amateur project.

By the way, KDL3's mission system would be great for adding gameplay length.

Giga Wing: Kirby
Hahahah...hohoho...eh..heh..heh...em...

That idea just made my day!

Anyway, yeah I don't what Nintendo's smoking...with all those different airride machinces, there's been no excuse for them not to do a full Kirby shmup. I'm thinking something somewhere imbetween Gradius and Thunderforce, while taking the power combos from K64 and having them function like RSG's weapon system.

btw, KDL3 is my favorite too! :P

If I get the time, I'll go over Heavy Metal in more detail. Maybe we can use this thread to compile all our own ideas and not just what shmups would be best with a Kirby mod hacked in or something.

Agreed. I'll see if I can't use the scanner to scan my concepts and put them on this thread. We should work on the ideas and make the blueprints, and maybe eventually send the idea to Nintendo or something.
