Fallout New Vegas

Post by KindGrind »

I'm tempted by this, but a quick search to check which version to get made me doubt... I mean, reviewers mentioning the stability issues ninja edit their reviews and say they have to review it again, or pull their score momentarily. Seems pretty fishy to me, but maybe I'm misinformed.

Does it crash this often? It does seem to be a pretty terrible problem. I loved every bit of FO3, but I guess I'll wait for a patch or something. What is your experience with the game so far?

At first it ran better for me than FO3 ever did but whenever more than one NPC was on screen at once, my FPS would dip down into slide show territory. There is a fix going around that involve downloading a .dll and placing it in the NV directory that seems to fix things but the devs made a big stink about it being a bad idea. All I know is everything is running smooth at a high framerate since then and nothing is overheating or crashing.

Even before tweaking things I never once had a crash just poor performance.

Right, thanks for the input. I heard the PC version was the most stable one...

Basically, I'm looking to get this for the PS3 or X360. My computer won't run it. :)

I've been playing this non stop, and have had no problems on 360 version. I like this allot, it's harder though. And, they made it so you have to be more selective about leveling, no more god charas..

I've had a few problems on the 360. One time I couldn't access a terminal (the sounds were happening, but no graphical interface), and a couple of times the sound has been wonky. Reloading doesn't help, but exiting into the dashboard and restarting has helped.

edit: I've put in about 20 hours so far. And the bugs haven't been too frequent.

My friend's mom works at a local movie/game rental store, so my friend gets to play all the pre-releases. He said it freezes once in awhile, but it usually runs smoothly.

Decided to go for it, bought the X360 version. The store was running a promotion, where they gave you 50% extra credit towards New Vegas. Edded up giving up Muramasa for 32$(!) and paid the rest.

4 hours (straight) in, and not a single hiccup. I did see some weird things, i.e., one occurence of an enemy hovering in midair, and another stuck in a rock with its head coming out, but nothing gamebreaking.

Makes me remember how much I had enjoyed FO3. I sense good times ahead!

I'm passing on this. I loved Fallout 3, but...

1) Obsidian has a mostly poor track record
2) This game looks like just 'more' F3, and I don't really need more of the same
3) I figured it would be buggy as hell and I was right

I know, I know.

But I can buy it back for 20$.

Played some more New Vegas, and it does look like more FO3... But do you remember how amazing it was?

Very impressed with the game so far. Those on the fence that enjoyed Fallout 3 do not hesitate. Those who didn't care about the previous iteration I'd say pass.

Patch released, too, although now clocking 10 hours I have had no issues whatsoever.

I had one freeze tonight, after the patch. But that's out of about four? hours in a sitting.

Holy crap. I felt overwhelmed by the sheer amount of sidequests I have available to me. I don't know what sort of percentage I have opened up, but there seems to just be a ton of stuff to do. I have trouble not getting completely sidetracked!

And yeah, it's very similar to F3. But that is in no way a bad thing. There are improvements, and I'm enjoying the hell out of it so far.

It's no more buggy than Oblivion or Fallout 3 and it's the unfortunate price you pay for near-complete freedom, an aging engine and the limited ram of five year old consoles. I've played through it and it crashed/bugged out maybe five or six times over 35 hours. It's irritating but it didn't get in the way of me enjoying the game.

Exactly, this shouldn't be any surprise to anyone who's played any Bethesda Softworks-released RPG. The best thing you can do is let them know what the circumstances were when it happened so that they can more easily debug the issue. Personally, I'm staying off XBL for now since I want to take advantage of some of the advantageous glitches.

4 hours in and havent experienced anything weird yet. no crashes either. More of the same, sure, and I love that. But theres so much more, and a lot of variety in weapons so far.

Yes, absolutely loving this. Even though it is more of the same (in a good way) it still has a unique character to it. It feels a little lighter-hearted and has a bit more humor, while still being a dark, somber game. The story has been great so far. Has a different focus than the epic F3 but still very good. Plus, there is a sickening amount of stuff to do. The many, many factions of the game open up a lot of great moral grey areas to explore.

Running the PC version with the .dll fix, and I mostly have no problems, other than the occasional crash. Save a lot and you should be OK.

Wish there were a few more songs on the radio though. What's there fits the mood perfectly, but twice as many songs would be cool.

Really fantastic game. Brings back good memories of F3 without being too samey.

The radio stations were very repetitive in Fallout 3, too.

I like this a lot so far, even though it managed to freeze on me after my first ten minutes of play (PS3 version). It's a definite improvement from F3 in terms of dialogue, plot, characterisation and depth. Which is cool, because from previous experience, Bethesda are good at creating worlds, but absolutely awful at populating them with believable people or entertaining stories.

I've pretty much been marathoning this for the last week. And, I love it, in many ways better than Fallout 3. Sure it has frozen a couple times, so what. There are so many quests to do! Almost overwhelming, and if you are quick to make decisions it isn't always going to play out like you expect. I've had a few moments where everything hits the fan all of a sudden, and I'm working to stay alive and pull my ass out of the fire. I think I'm almost half way through the main story, and they do a great job at making it difficult to decide who is going to come out on top. I had originally set out to play an evil chara, but many of the helpless towns folk don't really deserve my wrath, so they have been left alone. The Legion, the "evil army" are such tool bags I want nothing to do with them. The NCR seem too power hungry for my taste, and I can't really tell if they want the best for the wasteland or not. So, it's been allot of trying to play the middle and bide my time until I make a move for power and try to take this bitch over. I still need to go around and talk to some of the factions and see where everyone stands in my opinion of how this should go down. As a RPG this is the coolest thing ever, it's really going to come down to my decisions and some luck on how this plays out.
I'm at level 18 with my chara, and really have to say that I am no where near as powerful as I would like to be. You really need to put some thought in how you level your chara, it seems like you need to specialize a little bit. You can't just have a well rounded all powerful chara. Sure, because of a couple lucky finds, and an event that went really sour, resulting in their deaths (hey, it was their fault, they moved on me, I would have let it slide until they jumped me), I have some really strong weapons, I can't even use some of them correctly yet because of my skill levels! It doesn't look like my chara is really going to turn out how I had hoped, be careful in planning and having the appropriate skill levels to get the right perks when you can.
So, much is happening in this game, some of it comes at you pretty quick, putting you on the spot with your decisions, it can be stressful but I really feel like I'm playing out an event to come. I have no clue how this is going to turn out, but I'm excited to see!
edit: I can't wait until everybody gets further in the game, and we can start talking about what's happening. All the charas in the game have agendas they want you to fallow, and I would like to know where everybody else stands as far as who they agree with.

Much better this way.

As for New Vegas I'm holding off myself. I see you guys are more or less having fun and that's awesome but I'm with Cthulhu, it just looks like more of the same. Now that's a pretty awesome "the same", but I don't think I can justify that kind of purchase with DFK and christmas coming up.

It plays the same, and has many of the same mission types, exploring, and looting. But, what is happening is vastly different. It's not as simple as turning something on, and if you want to commit genocide or not. It's pretty clear from the start that it's a power struggle, and you can keep it simple as that and choose a side. But, it's starting to seem much more complicated as I progress. I've already made a couple split second desisions that I really paid for, only I lived they did not.

So this time around it looks like Obsidian has done a good job since their last attempts with Alpha Protocol and Kotor2.
I hope to try it soon.

one thing I love about this game is that you have to really plan out what kind of character you want to play. No bubble heads to bump up stats, and those books to bump stats are far and few between. No more god-characters. Ive passed up a few things so far, 8 hours in, because I didnt have the required skill level in that category.

As a big fan of Fallout 1 & 5, I was grandly disappointed when, in Fallout 3, I was attacked on sight by those bl**dy raiders as soon as I got out my vault. What if I want to be a raider ?

Quick question about New Vegas : do people attack you on sight for apparently no reason ?

It depends where you stand with the different factions in the game. If you walk around with an armor worn by a clan, and it so happens you cross someone that's an enemy of that clan, well you will be attacked.

Fiends/Gouls will attack you, obviously.

Also, I love how the game forces you to make choices and choose sides in the game. You *will* have to fail some quests in order to complete others, which I think is very interesting. Once you reach the Strips the game opens up so much, and imo that's when the fun really starts.

one thing that bothers me about this game is that the world doesn't feel as "lived-in" as the fallout 3 world. what i mean by that is in fallout 3 when i ran across a new building/location i felt the need to explore every nook and cranny cause there was always cool stuff to find and usually a history conveyed via notes/ audio logs/ visual cues. this game i run across a building in the wastes and there isn't a damn thing going on there. maybe a couple rounds of ammo or a couple bottles of sarsaparilla. it just feels a bit hollow.

Vault 11 has to be one of my favorite sequences in an RPG. Almost tops the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion.
