The Adventure Of Little Ralph (Jp PlayStation)
Has anyone here played this? I have a (sealed) copy - that I'm getting in a trade - coming my way in the next few days...and I wouldn't mind hearing some impressions, if anyone's played it. There don't seem to be many reviews of it out there...

Well, I think it's great, and that's after a $30 purchase. I could blab on about it, but this guy says alot and says it pretty well.Bar81 wrote:My understanding is that's it's a decent to good but definitely not great platformer that's entirely overhyped due to its rarity. Well, that's possible, I've only had limited time with the game. But I will say that I wouldn't take anything that site says seriously as pretty much every PSX review is a full Sony blowjob effort (although several of the games *do* actually deserve the high praise licked onto them by the site.) Farcically, he even lays out the heavy praise for Gaia Seed, which is known to be at best a so so effort.undamned wrote:Well, I think it's great, and that's after a $30 purchase. Odd, I found the site to be pretty unbaised for the most part. Just becuase you disagree with the site, doesn't mean that their opinion isn't valid. The reviews are very informitive. That reviewer talks just as highly of non PSX games like Kururin Paradise (which I ordered from Play-Asia. They have it for cheap) too, so I don't think they are giving Sony a blow job or whatever. BTW, I thought I saw some praise for Gaia Seed in some other posts and the some of the comments I saw in the shmups forum pretty much matched what I read in the review.Bar81 wrote:Well, that's possible, I've only had limited time with the game. Hmm looks like at this rate I'm going to have to at least tear open the shrink-wrap, and give this one a go
I did contemplate just keeping it sealed, and offering it up as a trade...but now I'm not so sure. I guess I'm just curious
I had read the review that undamned mentioned, and that made the game sound great...on the other hand, I totally get Bar saying - "every PSX review is a full Sony blowjob"
Harmful Park probably deserves the hype...but I'm not so sure about some of the others...
Anyone else?

2D platformers are probably my favourite genre but I do not like this game at all. The enemies are hideous.

How about someone posts the good and bad points of the game? Seriously, a couple of one paragraph posts won't help nearly as much as more detailed impressions of the game.
BTW, that reviewer is positive about all of the games on the site, not just the PSX ones. He gives full details on why he likes the game and detailed info on the games. He also choses to review mostly more obscure games that didn't make it to the US. Strangly enough, I also like how he doesn't use review scores. I'm not saying I'm agreeing with all his reviews. However, I do think that he gives good reasons for why he likes the games.

I think that providing review scores is pretty much unnecessary considering he performs net fellatio on every game he reviews.BrianC wrote:How about someone posts the good and bad points of the game? Well, you've convinced me to put in some time with this game and give some in-depth perceptions.

I do admit, that he is a little too positive for some games, though. I heard that that one Time Bokan game has some major flaws. The good points are nice, but I think it's important to list the flaws too. A couple of the games sound more like good games than really spectacular ones too. Also, the fact that Kyuiin isn't mentioned much at all on the shmups forum gives me huge doubts about that one.Bar81 wrote:I think that providing review scores is pretty much unnecessary considering he performs net fellatio on every game he reviews.BrianC wrote:How about someone posts the good and bad points of the game? Come to think of it, after reading a bit about Little Ralph, it doesn't sound very original. It sounds like a typical platformer with some cool elements, but it doesn't seem to have much that isn't used elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I like games like Buster's Hidden Treasure for the Genesis quite a bit, but I wouldn't pay 80-100 dollars for them.

That really doesn't mean anything at all. I'm not saying it's good but just because a game hardly gets mentioned doesn't mean it's not the best game ever.
As for Little Ralph's graphics. Keio on the Saturn is probably a hundred times better.

I still say that Astal is the Saturn platformer to go to if you really want eye candy (the graphics alone make it worth a purchase if you ask me, especially because it's cheap to get). Keio has more gameplay to it and is better-animated, however. Then again, I've never played Ralph myself so I can't say how it compares to either of them.99pence wrote:As for Little Ralph's graphics. This game is actually quite good, I consider it having higher replay value then Kirby, may be close to Super Mario. But there is nothing particularly new in this title, but it still quite good. A frend of mine like it very much, you can see his review here.

Actually I think if you like platformer, the PSOne "Umihara Kawase Shun" is a must have. See a the details review below, also from Alan Kwan.

*Meow* I am as serious as a cat could possible be. *Meow*
Just play it obviously. That's the only way you'll know if you like it.
It is overhyped. There was a two hour CNN special on Little Ralph last night. It's all the kids are talking about on the street. Apparently shops have been throwing out copies of the latest Harry Potter book to make room for copies of Little Ralph.

So true, so true...Curiosity killed the Cat.Or at least devalued it.

But seriously, I think I'm definitely going to try it out - I figure it'll still be worth quite a lot mint/complete, if I do decide to sell it on

That's the idea! These out of print games are not like buying a new Madden for $50. If you don't like the new game you just bought, you're not likely to recoup your money (there are some exceptions... for games like Halo where you could sell it back for 80% of the price you paid in the first week but within a few months the used price gets pretty low).Grinning Cat wrote:But seriously, I think I'm definitely going to try it out - I figure it'll still be worth quite a lot mint/complete, if I do decide to sell it on![]()
If you don't like an out-of-print but well-sought-after game like Adventuers of Little Ralph, you'll be able to sell it back for most of what you paid (maybe more if you are careful about what price you pay for it). So get it at the going price (or a bit less if you can be patient), give it a try and if you love it then it's a keeper and you've found a cult classic and perhaps a life-long favorite game. If it's not for you let it go and get your money back and try something else.
