And a fucking nice feature if it actually worked... :) I'm fairly certain that the problem is the windows software as the on screen remote doesn't work anymore either.

Here is what it looks like when i try to use the capture tool:

Image

The program recognizes the connection to the XRGB-3 (otherwise it would say XRGB-3 No Connect and i wouldn't be able to load the capture window).

The Japanese text in the capture window says something like "Please select FPGA B2 mode and restart the XRGB-3". Which doesn't make sense as my XRGB-3 already is in B2 mode and i have verified that the B2 mode is installed (Firm Ver > FPGA 3 Ver > Ver 10 08 19). I tried starting the program while in B0 mode and then switching to B2 but it doesn't make a difference. Same thing happens when using my Vista partition and VMware and XP on linux.

It would be cool if someone else would try this. But it only makes sense that the Tool program is to blame.

Hope it will be fixed soon and that we will get an English version too :)

Yes i upgraded from the latest english to this one. Also tried reflashing the new firmware but that didn't help. I also remembered to reset the unit before turning it back on :)

Does it work for you Akumajo?

Do you have an earlier firmware that does work on Windows 7? With the public one do you experience the same problems as i do?

I tested differents firmwares ... same result. It was never working for me. The remote tool dont even works. Are you using original USB cable ? I'm currently using 3m USB cable, I dont thinks that's the problem but I will try, need to find a laptop :).

The release was rushed ... told them.

In theory you should :
1) reset unit
2) flash fw 2.12a
3) flash fw 2.21J
4) set to B2 mode
5) use S in / D in / Game In inputs
6) open xrgb tool

It seems that not every usb controler works. Could be that. But mine is Intel and it doesnt works so :?:

That sucks big time :/ I'm pretty sure mine is nVidia so i probably wont work either. I wonder if it will work on my Eee 1000H laptop if i find a way to reinstall windows on that...

ok, just tested with a Vaio laptop (Intel ICH7 USB controller) + windows XP SP3 and same USB cable

It works ! Capture takes 20-30 seconds to finish.

Be VERY VERY careful about that!! I almost fucked up my XRGB-3 when downgrading from 2.21J to 2.12a. The unit didn't turn off after this so i thought maybe i should just immediately flash with the new firmware... Tried flashing the 2.21J firmware again. Got a rom error at the end. And now the unit wouldn't turn off anymore. The ON light was on constantly and nothing worked anymore. I couldn't reflash it in this state so i was very worried and unplugging the PSU didn't help either as it immediately turned back ON when reconnected.

I got around this by unplugging the PSU and holding down Menu + OK when i reconnected the PSU socket and the XRGB-3 saw this as a reset and now i got a picture again. The menus were totaly fucked up though and nothing worked like it was supposed to. I tried reflashing with the 2.21J firmware and thankfully it seems to be working fine again.

The capture tool still doesn't work :p But if you have intel and it doesn't work for you either then it might still be the program. As i mentioned before the on screen remote-program has worked fine before on my Vista partition...

Now i can't really decide if i should risk downgrading to the English firmware again or keep this Japanese one and wait till we get an English translation...

sure

setup is : PS1 (RGB 15 KHZ) > Xselect > XRGB3 (D in 1 - 525i signal + B2 mode, all default options)

http://rapidshare.com/files/415714836/dotbydot.zip

Capture tool detect those resolutions :
Dot by dot 1 (a.bmp) : 1032x768 (screen is "streched" to full screen)
Dot by dot 2 (b.bmp) : 1032x768 (screen is "streched" to full screen)
Dot by dot 3 (c.bmp) : 680x472 (screen is not streched, its "centered")

I add covers, info and screenshots to the archive on playright.dk. Decent Sega Saturn screen shots are very hard to find :)

Could it be that simple? Computer hardware isn't my strongest side. What would i be looking for exactly?

Akumajo you mentioned that it didn't work with Windows 7. Is that something you were told by Micomsoft or your own experience? If it doesn't work with Windows 7 at all then it might not work with Vista either.

Dot_By_Dot 1X is not exactly 1:1 aspect. In case anyone cares :)

The screendump is 756x472 with pretty big black borders:

Image

If you scale the image to 710px wide with Gimp or another image manipulation program and downscale the entire picture by 50% you will get a result very close to 1:1. Here is the finished result after black borders removed and the image upscaled by 2 to make the difference clearer:

Here are two Gimp-scripts RJK from Play:Right wrote to scale and crop the images. Made for Saturn in 240p but might work for other things as well:

Scale only (save as saturnfix.scm):

Code: Select all

> (define (script-fu-saturnfix image drawable)
	(gimp-image-scale-full image 710 472 3)
	(gimp-image-scale-full image 355 236 3)
)

(script-fu-register "script-fu-saturnfix"
	"SaturnFix"
	"Fix Saturn grab"
	"RJK"
	"RJK"
	"31/08/10"
	"RGB*"
	SF-IMAGE    "Image"    0
	SF-DRAWABLE "Drawable" 0
)

(script-fu-menu-register "script-fu-saturnfix" "<Toolbox>/Xtns/Script-Fu/")

script-fu-saturnfix()()
Scale and crop (might not be 100% but seems to work great, save as saturnfix2.scm):

Code: Select all

> (define (script-fu-saturnfix2 image drawable)
	(gimp-image-scale-full image 710 472 3)
	(gimp-image-scale-full image 355 236 3)
	(gimp-brightness-contrast drawable 0 5)
	(plug-in-autocrop 0 image drawable)
	(gimp-image-crop image (- (car (gimp-image-width image)) 2) (car (gimp-image-height image)) 1 0)
)

(script-fu-register "script-fu-saturnfix2"
	"SaturnFix2"
	"Fix Saturn grab"
	"RJK"
	"RJK"
	"31/08/10"
	"RGB*"
	SF-IMAGE    "Image"    0
	SF-DRAWABLE "Drawable" 0
)

(script-fu-menu-register "script-fu-saturnfix2" "<Toolbox>/Xtns/Script-Fu/")

script-fu-saturnfix2()()

I have a Super famicom and a XRGB2 and 3. I'm having issues....

I have tried 2 RGB cables for my 1st model super famicom. They both work on the XRGB2 but they do not work on the XRGB3. The picture will come up but then drops in and out over and over on the XRGB3. Could it be my power supply, it's not the original nintendo power unit.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

The PSU on the SFC is pretty generic. You can use a MD/Genesis PSU as well. PAL SNES PSUs won't work since they are AC, not DC. I have a SFC with the original Nintendo SFC RGB cable and it works fine, also have a SFC with a modded RGB output (generic 9pin DIN) along with a selfmade RGB cable and it works fine as well.

What RGB cables are these ? Dedicated SFC ? Or SNES ? Or GameCube ? They all differ from each other and have to be modded to meet the SFC specs.

I've been looking at purchasing an XRGB-3 to use my superguns/retro consoles on my LCD screen and am basically trying to work out whether it is worth the investment.

Firstly am I correct in understanding it will up-convert all RGB signals regardless of region. I am unclear as to whether it will up convert a PAL composhite signal, anyone tried?

Also are the setup/onscreen menus/documentation in Engrish or Japanese?

And finally.... Is the picture worth £300 as opposed to directly connecting RGB scart?

Cheers

Haven't tried using composhite (why bother?) but 50Hz works fine in theory, it all depends on your TV's VGA input. It must be able to accept 50Hz and there is a VERY good chance that it doesn't. Using a VGA to DVI device like the Gefen VGA to DVI scaler plus 50Hz works perfectly for me, that's how i know :)

There is an older english firmware (2.12). The new 2.21 firmware should be released in english soon.

No doubt. I will never connect anything retro to my HDTV without a XRGB-3 ever again :)
