PC Engine recs!

Post by Nico87 »

Been a while since I bought any now and I'm looking to expand my collection a little bit. I already have around 20-30 titles, but I can't be bothered mentioning them now.

Don't recommend any shmups though, got the ones I want, and the games must be import-friendly. Some of my fav genres include top-down shooters, run 'n gun and platformers.

Thanks!

You!

Invaders! Get you the
hot bullets
of shotgun
to die!!

There's Gain Ground SX as well.

Some decent Monster World entries as well...so I hear. I honestly can't think of much besides spaceship / fantasy people shooters. Horror Story maybe? Also, Beyond Shadowgate ought to be fun, though that's not an import. Adventure (i.e. not arcade / action) game.

Shubibinman Games are all good platformers
Dynastic Hero is good (although good luck finding a US version they are quite expensive)

If you like Castlevania, try Rondo of Blood. Bonk's Revenge is fun too.

The CD-Rom2 based "Shubibinman 3" is a lot of fun for a platformer on the ol' PC Engine console. The U.S. region Hu-Card release of ShockMan is based on the Shubibinman series.

Even "Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure" on U.S. region Hu-Card format released by TTI has it's charms.

If you can pick up TTI's U.S. region Magical Chase complete set on the cheap, it's a sweet "cute 'em up" shmup title worthy of your Turbografx-16/Turbo Duo gaming collection. Toys-R-Us sold it on the cheap at $19.99 USD brand new back in 1994.

I don't care what your favourite genres are, get all Ys games.

I'm quite partial to the Valis series, and my favorite, Dracula X.

Serious? They're considered some of the best ports on the system.. Ninja Spirit is excellent. Splatterhouse is done well but I don't think it's a good game.

Legend of Valkyrie is underrated if you don't have it, but you need to be good at recognizing jp characters to restore your password saves.
Humans, think about what you have done

The PC-Engine Splatterhouse port is pretty good. It's not arcade perfect, but it's close.

Many, many, great games on this system. The PC Engine's arcade conversions were excellent for the time. Compare its version of Outrun to those on home computers of the time for instance. Since then we've obviously had many better (sometimes...) conversions of the same games, but they're still worth picking up.

These are all games I've owned in the past or still own.

Cute Taito games:
Don Doko Don
Kiki Kaikai
Mizubaku Daibouken (Liquid Kids)
Parasol Stars (a must)
Rainbow Islands (CD)
The NewZealand Story

Nice Namco classics:
Marchen Maze
Splatter House
Valkyrie no Densetsu

and the rest:
Akumajou Dracula X (CD)
BikkuriMan World (which is essentially Wonderboy in Monster Land)
Bomberman series
Operation Wolf
Outrun
PC Denjin/PC Genjin series (Bonk)
Pomping World (Pang/Buster Bros.) (CD)
Son Son II
Wonderboy III Monster Lair
Zipang (a version of Solomon's Key)

Double Dragon II (Super CD-ROM2): Sort of a cross between the NES and arcade versions in gameplay. The soundtrack is entirely new, but it's great (especially the Rolling Thunder 2 style jazz in Mission 2 and one of the later stages). Thrown enemies will knock down anyone in their way, similarly to Final Fight.

I'll second ZOM on the Ys games. Ys IV didn't appear officially in English, but a doujin translated version exists.

I wish they had a few more Arcade Card titles. Seeing how good Fatal Fury 2 & Special turned out, a Super Street Fighter II conversion would have been the bomb.
Here's a Fatal Fury Special video on PCE. Terry's & Mai's stages look good in this one. Lots of details that the Sega CD one doesn't have are in this (i.e. the audience & dancers in Duck King's stage).
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Any good PCE Arcade CD-rom2 fighting game will require the use of a good 6-button arcade stick setup...I'd recommend picking up a Hori produced "Fighting Stick PC" arcade stick controller. Built solidly and has support for both 2-button based games and 6-button based games via a switch on the fly. Hori doesn't make such arcade sticks like the Fighting Stick PC anymore with it's all solid metal shell based arcade stick base -- has plently of heft and won't slide around like the lighter 1st-party and other various 3rd-party produced PCE arcade sticks that use a plastic body shell mounted to a weighted base setup.

Even if Strategy isn't your particular genre, you should give both Nectaris and Neo Nectaris (CD) a shot.

Kaze Kiri is a bit overpriced...okay, a lot - for what you get though. (At least that's been my impression so far.)

Gekisha Boy (Photograph Boy) rocks my sox.
Guaranteed to be unlike any game you've played before. Very innovative.
An old newspaper editor gives you a list of things you need to take pictures of, and you go walking about town trying to capture shots of UFOs, aliens, and celebrities all the while jumping over flaming barrels thrown by a monkey.. (wait - that last part may be from another game...)

I wouldn't recommend the PCE versions of Ys I through III over the PC versions (well, remake, in Ys III's case).

You should check out Somer Assault (Mesopotamia in Japan.) Its an interesting little action\puzzle game that is pretty fun and unique.

Gekisha Boy got ported to the PS1 (again, in Japan only) as The Cameraman, with a couple of extra levels thrown in. It's cheaper than trying to get hold of the PCE original, in my experience, and looks and plays identically.
