Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition

Looks like the same as the original for me, except with the resolutions setting and WinXP/Vista/7 compatibility.
Still though, it's good to see this damn game back into action.

I'm going to have to try this. Huge Raptor fan.

Hard to tell, but seems to just be a tweak of the Windows version that Mountain King Studios were already distributing... and where is all this Raptor love suddenly coming from?!
Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Maybe they're gearing up for a remake that doesn't involve euroshmup game mechanics.
Nah.
Nah.
Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Nostalgia my god man. Raptor is one of those few games I played as a child where I actually followed through on the shareware screen and and bought the full version. Plus it's got a really nice sound track.TMR wrote:Hard to tell, but seems to just be a tweak of the Windows version that Mountain King Studios were already distributing... and where is all this Raptor love suddenly coming from?!

Hmm, even nostalgia doesn't work like that for me - when Raptor came out i already had better shoot 'em ups on the Amiga and Megadrive to play so i didn't much like it then either...njiska wrote:Nostalgia my god man. A little "research" (okay, i looked at Wikipedia) reveals that the DotEmu version of Raptor has all the issues removed that were in previous Windows-based versions (as well as adding compatibility for 32- and 64-bit flavours of Windows), supports multiple display resolutions and offers a graphical enhancement that can be turned off for nostalgia's sake.
With that in mind i thought about getting it and an original version off eBay to have a box (to add to my originals of Soldner X, Xenon 2 and X2) but the cheapest was three times as much as i'd be paying for the game! (Even funnier, i went looking for a PC copy of Project X and the bloke wanted £15.99 for it on floppies - there's a price sticker on the box in the photo saying £14.99!)

Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
I remember liking this game as a kid because it was just like playing an arcade game. However, I had never played a shmup in arcades before. Once I played a real arcade shmup, I didn't like Raptor.

Kinda nostalgic, though.

Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Well, it's no Major Stryker, so why are they trying to sell this still? Amusing to see somebody outside of Apogee with rights to distribute, though I suppose actually being able to play it on a modern machine without hacks justifies something.
Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Raptor is a fundamentally bad shmup. Once everyone realizes this, the world will be a better place.
Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Mountain King Studios (under the name Cygnus) were the original developers of Raptor and it seems that Apogee let devs retain their IP as a matter of course, so MKS produced and released the Windows version about five years after the original release without Apogee's involvement. What's particularly bizarre about this situation is that the Windows and DOS version[/i] are both still on sale, the latter on the 3D Realms site.Ed Oscuro wrote:Well, it's no Major Stryker, so why are they trying to sell this still? I tried it out for the first time a few months ago. It really is bad! It's probably the prime example of why euroshmups are terrible.captpain wrote:Raptor is a fundamentally bad shmup. Once everyone realizes this, the world will be a better place.

Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
I quite like raptor for the action. its got good action. other than that it pretty much sucks. some of the weapons are cool though.

It's also the prime example as to why they shouldn't be called Euroshmups! =-)kengou wrote:I tried it out for the first time a few months ago. It really is bad! That "enhancement" is just rather disgusting 2×SaI filter. Looks better without it IMO.TMR wrote:offers a graphical enhancement that can be turned off for nostalgia's sake.

Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Oh... if that's all they've done it doesn't seem worth enabling in the first place really. Still, if someone actually wanted to play Raptor the DotEmu version'd still be the best bet i s'pose.worstplayer wrote:That "enhancement" is just rather disgusting 2×SaI filter. Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
isn't it the same one from Gog.com?
Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
Looks to be, GOG list Mountain King Studios and DotEmu as publishers but their download is listed as 36Mb whilst DotEmu are saying 50Mb... rounding up perhaps? Someone might want to double check my maths here since it's well past midnight, but i think GOG.com is the cheapest at $5.99, then DotEmu at about $6.36, MKS are asking $9.99 and the DOS version from 3D Realms is $6.31.Van_Artic wrote:isn't it the same one from Gog.com?
i've never used GOG, do they have DRM on their stuffs...? i want to own Raptor to properly bitch about it. =-)

Re: Raptor: Call of the Shadows 2010 Edition
It sure isn't the greatest game but its a good time waster. I used to have a save with all the weapons and I'd just use the mouse to plow through the game while I was talking on the phone. It's majorly broken at that point though, you can have so much money and so many shields that nothings a real threat. I still liked Major Stryker better back then though.
