I've fed what I've found at http://www.cave.co.jp/gameonline/guwange/index.html to BabelFish, to at least get a rough approximation of what's going on. To tell the truth, not all that much that I've been able to discern. Thus far, here's what I've got:
--Guwange was a god of some sort sealed within a mountain. But somehow, the seal was broken, and Guwange is re-emerging. This is pure guesswork on my part, but if I'm deciphering what BabelFish elicited for Amagizu's story, when Amagizu, a nun under persecution for some reason (maybe her 400-year-lifespan was regarded unholy...), tried to give birth on the mountain, Guwange took the opportunity to possess her infant, and take control of her mind. Now if only I could figure out what was supposed to be said about Mikoto.
--Shishin is your typical assassin-without-a-past, although there seems to be an unknown daughter of his (...Mikoto?). Rikiou seems to be some sort of demonic entity cursed to eternal existence in the mortal realm.
--Gensuke is part of a family of physicians, that somehow attracted the unwelcome attention of the tengu Kirinmaru. Perhaps Kirinmaru himself has ordered Gensuke to join in the attack on Guwange and Amagizu. If I just knew why he wants this...
--Kosame is a shrine maiden, to whom the kitsune Yatsuhisha is bound by an oath. Yatsuhisha herself is perfectly willing to accept death if it means ending the threat of Guwange. (Gah...Where were they hiding Guwange's motivations on the site?)
--Shizuhiko, apparently, is one of the last members of the fallen Fujimura family. Ashikaga offered him (yes, him; Shizuhiko is male) a deal; help the machinations of Magira and Guwange, and drive off the shikigami. In turn, the Fujimura family would be restored to greatness. Shizuhiko accepted...
--Ashikaga is a descendant of one of the heroes of the early Muromachi era. Despite his illustrious heritage, he's shadowed with a terrible curse--from birth, he's been possessed by the monkey god Magira, who incites him to terrible acts of violence on a regular basis, acts that Ashikaga doesn't terribly mind. If the story related Magira's exact connection to Guwange, it definitely wound up in the unintelligible department...
Anyone who can read Japanese, and/or has access to the endings, any chance you could fine tune this, and/or fix anything I misgauged?
Trying to work out the Guwange storyline...
Re: Trying to work out the Guwange storyline...
Here is the storyline: Kids try to assassinate (because that's what kids do in Cave games) some witch (or was it a man? I dunno) who has stayed young through malicious means, but they fails. So then they go and fight everybody else. Their motivation is that the witch has been filling the towns with the bad mans (just like the mafia).
Yeah, it's that simple for me.

Yeah, people go on about Gunbird 2's endings, but Progear's premise makes me feel even more like: "O... kay, if you say so. This had better be some good shooting."

On a website known for having gay images appear via hotlinks I didn't want to take any unecessary risks.
