I agree, that baby with a hand-cannon for an arm is spooky.

I got to say the last boss in Gunbird 2. "Wow here comes the last boss emerging from the center of the pedistal thing... WTF?! A baby elephant with a horn?!" It's so anticlimactic.

Not quite a shmup, but for the most part shmup-like...

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker

Yeah, I went there...

And who could forget Mobile Light Force 2? Whatever happened to those 3 Ladies anyway?

The dialogue in Shikigami 2. The poetry of wolfman and sickle lady's tragic love affair inspired me to adopt a strict "demo off" policy when playing the game.

Damn, you beat me to it.

CyberCore for the TG-16 is one giant "WTF" moment as well. Not just for the theme, but the fact that, for some reason, it feels like a doujin game.

The Embryon in G-Darius IS based on a sea critter. Specifically, Clione limacina limacina, a.k.a. naked sea butterfly. It's a kind of sea slug--DIMINUTIVE sea slug (about as large as an "i" in a newspaper...if that). I understand that comparisons of that mollusc to angels are fairly common.

Of course, the real sea butterfly doesn't have anything like that disturbing-looking mechanical head...

The moments that make me go WTF...basically every single ending for every Technosoft shmup, with my opinion leaning towards TF IV, V, and Blast Wind.

Oh yes, and seeing yourself fight in Gradius V when you reach Stage 8.

I think ALL of Air Zonk is pretty WTF.

Another WTF moment is on Bio-Hazard Battle when you see the maggots coming out of the poo. Also, the crab bad guys on level 3 made me say wtf just because they look so pissed lol

All of Turbo Force, ESPECIALLY the last boss, in all of it's Lexus-logo shooting glory!

Also, the final boss music in End Effector gives me a seizure.

The bosses in Twinbee 3 Famicom. Those are seriously some of the strangest bosses I have seen in any shmup.

Aero Fighters 3. Not just one moment but practically the ENTIRE GAME. It's got a weird boss that turns into pixelated enemies, Spanky the "frying" dolphin, an ending where a penguin says "Heh heh heh!" a blatant Darius reference, Soh-Takeko, and last but not least...

Seeing the two people porking each other in F-A of R-Type Final was pretty much a WTF? moment for me. Some of the Bydo ships you can unlock are also pretty weird. Platonic Love anyone? (It kills them....WITH LOVE!!)

EDIT - Actually, alot of the bosses in Final gave me a WTF? kind of look on my face when I first saw them. Where the guys at Irem preverts or something? The Stage 2 boss is a HUGE NUTSACK!!!

are the guys at Irem preverts or something?
Way back when, some Irem developer was in either medical school or otherwise studying biology. The "'x'-type" classification system is apparently used to categorize everything from reproduction schemes to testing formats to automobiles (which really fucked up my google-fu), but in this particular context 'R-type' refers to the sexual reproduction paradigm.

Hence the penises, vaginas, sperm, eggs and uteruses in the R-Type series.

I had hoped to give a few appropriate examples of 'x'-types, but thanks to the ubiquity of the naming scheme, I'd end up with something like this:

R-Type: refers to sexual reproduction; Bentleys
A-Type: refers to the sort of people who will cut you off in traffic or during conversations; ex. your boss, the dude who stole your g/f
C-Type: refers to character-related functions or something similarly foo

My guess is that there's a type which corresponds to mitosis and one which corresponds to the parasitic reproduction scheme of viruses.

not to mention the weak spot on almost any R-Type boss... skin spreads open, revealing a pearly weak point... sound familiar? ;)

Isn't R-Type just awesomely disgusting? I love it!

Anyway - many of you probably haven't played Gynoug on the Mega Drive because otherwise it would have been mentioned already. Somewhere near the end of the game you have to fight a giant dick-brandishing monster man. He grits and cringes and strains as you fight him and the viens on his monster cock pulsate in agony.

After this fight i had to go take a shower - that's just nasty.

Basically all of Mars Matrix is one giant "wtf" moment. A giant space craft with wings doesn't move and attack that quickly, for gods sake.

Then there's this. I still find this and the tentacle disturbing as ever.

Choaniki games, generally.

The intro song + animations to the PS2 revision just made me laugh, and laugh, and laugh. I even turned the TV up. The Saturn game was considerably more fucked up however.

The true explanation of R-Type.

There are two main reproductive strategies.

R-Type. have few offspring, and try to make sure they all survive.
K-Type. have as many offspring as possible, and hope some survive.

Clearly, the straategy of the Bydo is K-Type, as ther are many many many eidentical enemies, while the player character is an example of R-Type

Ironically, R-Type is often favored by many insect species. Weird stuff.

The gaint mothership boss on R-Type and R-Type Final were like... waoh WTF look at the size of that thing!

Sex Paridous has WTF written all over it in my opinion it's just plain wacky which is the reason why I love the series so much.

Also Mobile Light Force... who ever decided to port Gunbird 1 to the PSX and but a front cover like the one shown below shoud be sacked due to it resembling nothing of Gunbird and tried to pitch it as a Charlies Angels themed game and was released at the time of the first of the new CA movies...

Image

Thats all I can think of right now...

p.s: Oh yes btw I own Gynoug on the Megadrive and it's one of my fave' megadrive games and it's really messed up... on par with Splatter House lol

Before fighting the 4th boss in Homura: going underwater, then through spiky crystal stuff, then up a wall to a red sunset thing-- what the hell?!

...and the third boss calling her 'pet' out to fight you, in a very cute matter. Cracks me up every time. XD

Mushihime-sama: Final Aki cheering you on whenever you respawn.. granted, it's part of the plot, but the first time you play it, one has to wonder (if one knows Japanese), why the hell is this fool cheering me on?!.

Many times have I went  while playing a shmup. Off the top of my head, these moments stand out the most:

- when I first experienced the final stage in Ikaruga
- when I got my first medal volcano in Giga Wing 2
- when I first saw the giant Queen Bee towards the end of DDP
- when I had my first laser battle with a boss in G Darius
- when I finally reached the final boss in Einhander

Choaniki or Parodius games can't be really counted as WTF inducing, as the whole games were meant to be WTF games.

Anyway yes, there's something definitely - the last bits of Philosoma were some of the most dramatic things I've ever seen in a SHMUP and they made me go WTF more than once. I love that game just for that.
And well, another defining WTF moment was when you pass across the venomous fumes in the sewer level of Apidya. Flipping screen AND inverted controls = WTF.
J-Manic wrote: when I finally reached the final boss in Einhander
ditto. I nearly barfed on that one.
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

All the 1940.s games by capcom, okay we have a Japenese shmup depicting American fighter craft fighting Japan or allies of Japan and one of them wasn,t realsed in America. Very weird.
