PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
I'm looking at getting some quality shmups for PS3, but I haven't seen much at all stateside lately, so I'm asking if there are any good PS3 imports to get. I have a JPSN account, but I don't have a point card for it, so I probably won't be able to buy stuff on JPSN, though I can on PSN, just nothing on their interests me.
I'm hoping for a vertical shmup or two.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
Pretty much nothing... especially domestic wise. I think that 3 pack of doujin games are up on the USA PSN, trouble witches or something.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
SOL. The 360 is the shooter system of this generation.
Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
I don't know of a single retail shmup. There's a few great ones on PSN though. And there's some PSOne shmups you can download on a japanese account, I think.

I bet the lag is horrendous on ps1 shmups.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Söldner X2 is the best shmup on the PSN. Reminiscent of th Thunder Force series.
There's a noticeable amount of lag with every psone title when played through an HDMI cable. Dodonpachi is unplayable with it.

It's all on PSN only. Not sure why it doesn't count for you but afaik there's no PS3 shmup on disc.
Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
The only thing I can come up with on disc is Pure White Glasonberry and considering that's a mini-game on No More Heroes: Heroes paradise it's quite a stretch. Gundemonium collection is on PSN though and it's a lot of fun.

Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
isnt Dodonpachi coming to the psn? or is it the wii?
The Ps3 is very much worst of the 3 current gen consoles for shmups, get a 360 or a PC (theres lots of shmups on the pc) if u dont have a gaming pc but have a last gen console, then use that to run emulators or Mame, gotta be better then sticking to the ps3

Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
Dodonpachi PS1 is up on the Japanese PSN but backwards compatible titles generally have a frame or two (or three, not sure) of lag which really messes with the playability of a game like Dodonpachi.TrevHead (TVR) wrote:isnt Dodonpachi coming to the psn? or is it the wii?

Good question...as a PS3 owner and no XBox 360, I feel left out of the community as I play Shatter more than any other game on the system. If your in the market and your a shmupper, I suggest XBox or classic systems.
Thats my 2 cents.

Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
I once played 1942: Joint Strike in another res (640 x 480 IINM) and got hellish lag- it was so bad the ship kept moving after I let off the joystick. It was just about fine when I turned it to 1280 x 720. Maybe the TV's scaler caused some extra overhead when it kicked in to scale 480p into 720p.
It'd be nice to be able to lock certain games into a given resolution. Take Time Crisis 4, which is fine at 480p but will slow down bad if you play in higher resolutions (hopefully the TC4 "Arcade Ver." in the TC Razing Storm pack will fix that issue among others).
Shame there's no PS3 shmup on Blu-ray.

Söldner X2 - that's about it. But you can get that for the PC as well. Your kind of screwed when it comes to shmups, sorry. :/

Soldner-X2 is on PS3 only. The first one came out for PC but was rebalanced and improved for the PS3.`Throwdown wrote:Söldner X2 - that's about it. But you can get that for the PC as well. Your kind of screwed when it comes to shmups, sorry. :/

I'm sure it's well documented and i've read it before, but why are there no shmups on PS3, specifically Cave? Some licensing thing?

Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
Rockin' Android bought 3 bullet hell shmups to PS3 the Gundemonium Collection (being discussed in another thread), 3 shmups that are pretty fun but not exactly my type of shooter. Its still not worth it. Not even the free internet thing (who knows how long that will last) justifies its price (if your a shmupper purist).

Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
Most likely it's a development cost issue. PS3 is more complicated hardware and MS was practically giving away dev kits to JP developers in the begining.Wavey Pavey wrote:I'm sure it's well documented and i've read it before, but why are there no shmups on PS3, specifically Cave? Re: PS3 Shmups worth getting (PSN doesn't count!)
Could have many reasons, I guess only Cave knows for sure. Possibly their titles are too niche and not economic on PS3 (minimum press quantities, etc.) or maybe Sony even won't approve them on disc and would only license them as PSN games... .Wavey Pavey wrote:I'm sure it's well documented and i've read it before, but why are there no shmups on PS3, specifically Cave? Anyway there's plenty of great shmups on 360, so no reason not to buy a Japanese 360 console. For the PS3 there's some interesting stuff on PSN and there are other good PS3 exclusive games, too (that's if you also play other genres).
