-Ships are designed as hardcore, 1950s style retro mechas
Can anyone name a shmup with this kind of design?

What DO I mean by "even"? The games are 11-15 years old and on 16-bit hardware- BUT the pre-renders in these are awesome. If Pulstar were remade in real-time 3D with the models' polygon counts lowered so that Cave's PC hardware could handle them, it wouldn't look so great.

Anyway, the new Cave hori sounds promising. But once again: No real-time 3D graphics please. I don't want to see any more "fucking cereal-box buildings" (that's how someone here had described DS II's backgrounds).
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Ok, that makes sense. When I think Pulstar and Blazing Star, I think of the gorgeous hand drawn graphics first which are still fantastic even today.

Long time since the last "brand new-original-squel free game" that's enought hype for me (by the moment).
Also, hardcore military? Jesus Christ!! fingers crosed for not U-jin on the pencils...
Now in a perfect world the game will be 2D (and vert.), but you know...

Btw, new here, hi folks!

next Cave game - Akai Katana?

Post by 1up »

From gfront blog: gfront blog

-Danmaku type horizontal scrolling shooting game
-Hardcore military shooter
-Each ship has a pair of characters (pilot and gunner?) with specific attacks
-Each ship changes its attacks when you change "mode"
-The characters (enemies, allies, and others - all human) are quite diverse
-Ships are designed as hardcore, 1950s style retro mechas
-Game is designed around destructible objects and dodging bullets - the core elements of an enjoyable STG - rather than obstacles and topography. This gives it a refreshing feeling.
-It has been carefully developed for over 1 year.
-Release in summer/fall 2010

My first thought was, "God that sounds a lot like Progear", unfortunately they appear to be be very different concepts. Still, at least it's not Deathsmiles 3.

Any word on whether or not it's sprite based?

You know it is the future. Add a possible drama cd for the possible console port and we're done.

I dig the character designs.... please god be 2D. That or either some drastically improved 3D from cave. I am optimistic though.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I hope its just me been jaded but the lack of gameplay footage makes me wonder just how far Cave are prepared to go to get non shmuppers / casuals to buy their games.

Considering the art reminded me of Persona and the fact that this looks more like the PV of a PC hentai visual novel rather than an over the top pew-pew STG... They are dead serious about it.

Or it could be that they don't want to show anything until the location test, where people will find out it's a 3D cardboard boxes fest with huge character portraits all over and voices yelling superpowers at the rhythm of the most rotten and overblown, ear-piercing, mind-numbing punchi-punchi happy true-la-la hardcore trance? (God, I'm mean! Please don't take this seriously, I'm not being serious business)

In fact, I'm waiting for the sung OP and the possible manga/anime. :P

It could well be a hori take of Battle Garegga mixed with Progear and flavoured with 1950's retro-tech manly mecha and huge battleships approaching fast, this is according to what's been mentioned previously. Granted, TLB will be a supercharged 2px loli on a giant bug screaming one of those unintelligible phrases.

Cave and the 1950s! Whoop whoop! That's me very excited.

I actually got an email from Cave yesterday saying they had some big news coming and they'd let me know more. They are a bit slow with emails (as am I) but if I do get anything new, of course I'll be straight back here with the info...

Im curious as to how Japanese shmup fans think about this vid and the iphone news. Cos at the end of the day its they who Cave will be most bothered about.

This vid sucks. I knew there was going to be no gameplay footage(which is upsetting in and of itself), so I was at least hoping for a glance at the mecha and I didn't even get that. Balls, Cave. This looks more like a soap opera than a shmup with a video like that.

because I'm a crazy elitist, pretty much. I know this game will probably still be good, but showing zero gameplay in a teaser to a game of a genre that's all about gameplay? just glad they didn't show any lolis

yet

How do you know if they're not lolis?

You can't actually infer anything from the trailer, including the much dreaded/loved loliness.

yep, kind meant the "yet" two-sided. I am also afraid at least one of the characters from the teaser will turn out to be a loli

Well, you can count me in with the folks who are happy with the character design, at least.

I'm with Strider77, PLEASE be 2D, or improved 3D. Maybe the fact that it's been worked on for a year will mean it will look OK. Hopefully. At least i'm not puking at the character designs like I did with DS II. And it looks like it wants to have a serious tone, which is great.

And let's get some gameplay footage.

Then why can't they do it again?

Actually, I wonder why we're complaining about 3D graphics when Raiden IV was so damn beautiful. Then again, 3D is usually not that good and we haven't even seen goddamn gameplay yet...

It's what they do best. So let them go back to the prerenders. No more realtime polygon GFX, at least on Cave's PC hardware. I'd like something graphically on par with the 360 mode of ESPGaluda 2. I think Raiden IV's 3D is exceptionally good, BTW. That said, I simply don't trust Cave with realtime 3D graphics after the DSII debacle. DSII is no Raiden IV. What's wrong with the 360 mode graphics from ESPGaluda 2 & Mushi Futari?

The character design shown in the AK trailer is cool. I dig the eerie mood, which suggests we could be in for something with similar gravitas to E.S.P.Ra.De & Guwange (and maybe even a hint of gore like those two). Hopefully someone grabs some video from the loketest on 7/23-26.

If DDP Daifukkatsu is getting ported to iPhone, hopefully a 360 port done by M2 can't be far behind. *fingers crossed*
