New shmup: Jamestown

Post by louisg »

A friend of a friend is writing a pretty cool looking shooter. It's got oldschool pixelled art (not pre-rendered stuff), and it looks like they might have played a Cave game or two before setting out to design it!

Here's to hoping it rocks.

"- As many have guessed (amazingly), it is set in 17th-century British colonial Mars. It will feature: Famous alt-historical figures! Majestic alien landscapes! Steampunk space tech! Hard-bitten settlers taking their shot at ekeing out a better life in the New World! Redcoats and Martians settling their differences with spear and space-musket!"

Why can't all games have premises this awesome?

Very interesting, will definitely be keeping my eye on this one. Would love an eventual XBLA release.

Yeah, it looks like they have an actual art budget.

Although the explosions look a bit too close to DDP's signature booms for me.

Hopefully it turns out well.

Louis, you should be making music for it :P

Sounds like it's possible...

Regardless I'm looking forward to it as well. The art work looks snazzy!

As usual, count me in for the PC version. The art is great. Wouldn't mind if it also ends up being retail with some goodies like the OST and such :P

Looks great, and the premise is indeed awesome. For some reason the art style reminds me of Gunbird II, though I guess they don't really look that similar.

Wow, holy crap, I'm going to need to pay attention to this one.

I really, really hope this ends up on XBLA or XBLIG down the line too.

Very nice...

maybe its counter to what you want to do with it; but it seems the art could do with a bit of gradient in the colors in places, maybe its wip - Probably most importantly, the softening of colors/features within an asset [particularly on the backgrounds] will help differentiate 'bodies of shapes' from the lovely boundaries/edges of individual assets [shown so nicely with hard edges] - perhaps literally a color or 2 more to soften smoke.... Similarly - just a touch more detail/color to be used in 'disguising' diagonals in the art - you'll notice that dodonpachi/metal slug try to disguise them a just a touch more... I mean really nit picky stuff... but ... this is pixel pushing :P

... But yeah maybe you're after a more ironic tone than I'd tend towards :) Eitherways, keep up the good work!

I really like the explosions - hope they look good in movement too ...

This looks really cool. The screen shots remind me of metal slug. Don't know if anyone else picked up on that or felt the same. Looking forward to this.

Yup! Looks great so far!

Anyone play that one that was a finalist in the last Yoyo comp (Nimbus Sky Princess)? That also had a very Metal Slug kinda look to it.... lets just hope this one actually *plays* fairly well. >_>

Well, maybe we can drag the devs here so people can provide The Teachings of the Shooting Game Masters (c) and at least explain what to avoid doing in their schmukmup, like health bars, inertia, invisible bullets, enormous hitbox and slow speed with bullet hell, etc.

I really like the retro-tech/steampunk style ala Progear or Last Exile.

Wow, it actually looks cool! Hoping for a PC-retail release is probably too much, but I'm looking forward to seeing it on XBL.

Too many cooks spoil the broth, leave the people creative freedom. :)
Looks interesting, though I actually prefer nice looking pre-rendered graphics over pixelled art as long as it's well done.

Hopefully it will somehow find its way to a console and not just get a PC release (more likely though I guess).

Hand-drawn graphics in 2010  :o :D

I'd probably buy this as a retail DVD for the xbox if the gameplay is as good as the graphics...

Looks like kotaku has taken note. Talk shit about them all you want, at least they care about shmups. Can't think of any other mainstream news outlet that would post this.

Even a blind squirrel finds an egg-corn every now and then but hey, it's good to see the game is getting some exposure.

That kotaku site is affiliated with Destructoid which is IMO one of the better mainstream games sites out there and has number of retro heads who live there including a growing number of shmup nuts partly thanks to Bulletmagnet's shmup blogs.

Looking at the comments section of the kotaku post Im not suprised a few ppl has used the game content as an excuse to do some england bashing

Wait, what? Kotaku is affiliated with Destructoid? I always figured they were rivals. If there's any affiliation, it must be very weak.

That's an interesting premise. I would have expected The Tempest in space. I suppose if my ancestor Stephen Hopkins (the awesomest of all the pilgrims) is in the game I'll have to buy it to support my team

You might want to check your source on that one, I've never heard of such a partnership. Off to the side, while I appreciate the mention of my blog, I doubt that I've had much of an effect on the community, considering how few people read me.
