Got an XBOX 360 yesterday!!...

Post by dave4shmups »

:D I got the Arcade model, along with Mass Effect, Dirt, and Bioshock. I still just have a CRT TV, but the games all look beautiful on it-Bioshock, in particular, looks incredible-better then Avatar on my TV.

The only thing that stinks is the text size, which, in the case of Mass Effect, is tiny. I don't suppose there's anything I can do about that, other then get an HDTV??

Overall, I love the system, it's fantastic!! :D :D

It's a good time to pick up an Xbox, there's alot of fantastic games you can get for really cheap now.
You're screwed on the text thing.. It sucks, I know. Read by the shape of the word?
Have fun!

Well, it's not that big of a deal in the case of Mass Effect-I can read the dialogue options just fine during conversations, it's just the little in-game messages about stuff like omni-gel that I have trouble with. (And I read about that in the game's instruction manual.) Is WarTech: Senko no Ronde worth picking up just for single player?? Because that's REALLY cheap.

But yeah, I'm stoked about all of the cheap games for the system! :D :D

You can find VGA adapters for the 360 for really cheap, and then just play it on a computer monitor.

That's the cheapest way to go if you can't get an HDTV yet. You'll need some speakers (or stereo with a line-in cable) for sound though.
People are throwing away old CRT VGA monitors all the time, and 360 stuff looks just great on them.

My 1st 360 game was Deadrising, and it has the same tiny text ptoblem. Only a couple games do.
Mass Effect was cool, the 2nd is such a fun and cool game, and about 1000x better! Just wait and see!

Careful with the Monoprice VGA adapters - mine has a lot of crosstalk or interference or whatever that causes visible noise in the picture. This doesn't happen with every adapter (I've tried others), I guess I just got unlucky when I ordered mine. The official Microsoft adapters are much more consistent in quality, but they're also pricier.

Also, if you're using an old CRT monitor, you should check if the VGA cable is removable. If it isn't, you'll need a F/F gender changer to bridge the cable coming out of the monitor to the 360 VGA cable.

The official MS cables come with a gender changer, but of course the monoprice ones don't. Something else to keep in mind when comparing prices.

Just finished Mass Effect last night for the 6th time. Will be starting it again maybe tonight.

I love my 360, there is a great catalogue of games that fit my tastes perfectly. It's actually starting to stand up to the PS2 in my opinion as a console with a large catalogue of diverse titles.

As for Senko no Ronde I have had a lot of fun with it in singleplayer which is a blessing as the multiplayer is absolutely dead. Well worth a few quid.

You can pick up a used official Microsoft Xbox 360 VGA cable set for a mere $9.99 USD from your local Gamestop compared to forking out a whopping $39.99 USD for one brand new. It does have built-in Toslink output for use with those older stereo A/V recievers in glorious 5.1 Digital Dolby surround sound. Plus it also has the standard L&R RCA phono output jacks...just would need to use a phono to 1/8" mini stereo jack adapter to hook up to a 2.1 computer speaker setup and you're in business.

By adjusting the screen settings from within the 360's options screen, you can select to have it display up to 1080p in either traditional 4;3 or 16:9 aspect ratio. The 360 will even display in 640 x 480p format if you want it to -- perfect if you have one of those super old-school 4:3 based CRT-SVGA monitor setups.

There's small text in Dead Rising? That stinks, how much of it do you need to read to play the game? I'm surprised that you can't just jump right in and start smashing zombies.

I forgot to mention that my 360 came with Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, which has the smallest text of all, and Viva Pinata. I'll probably trade in both, given that Wartech is $2.99 used at GameStop.

In terms of RPGs for the 360, which one is the most traditional? I'm talking like Dragon Quest VIII traditional, which is what I like.

My money's on Blue Dragon for that one, though Lost Odyssey would probably be in the running somewhere, since they're from the same developer.

Both Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are pretty traditional. But their gameplay resembles Final Fantasy more than Dragon Quest. Blue Dragon looks more like a DQ game though. Personally, I think LO is the better of the two. BD has a nice battle/encounter system, but I dislike almost everything else about it.

The Xbox 360 game of Ridge Racer 6 is just a mere $5.99 nowdays used from your local Gamestop. Picked it up to see how it fares compared to the Ridge Racer 7 game on the PS3 platform. Pretty slick arcade drifting game indeed (considering that it was released back in late 2005).

Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are very enjoyable as traditional RPGs.

How do you feel about real time JRPGs? If you are willing to give them a go there are a few that I have spent some time with.

Tales of Vesperia is a charming and lengthy game stuffed with things to do. I played it through in co-op with the missus and we both really enjoyed it.

Star Ocean 4 I recommend but with some real reservations and warnings. If you play it for the story, polish and characters/dialogue then you will be in for one of the worst game experiences of recent times. If, however, you are like me and enjoy building characters up, in depth item synthesis and crafting, rock hard postgame bosses, a stupid amount of collectable battle trophies, etc etc. then you might enjoy it. I've played it for hundreds of hours.

Definitely backing the the recommendation of Tales of Vesperia - fantastic game, and easily my favorite of the series.

I'm also hearing good things about Resonance of Fate.

You must get Vesperia, easily the best game in the series in terms of polish. I really enjoyed Eternal Sonata as I had a friend to coop through the game, but its encore mode is a nice challenge.
StarCreator wrote:I'm also hearing good things about Resonance of Fate.
Thing with Resonance according to a friend is that the game is fun as hell first half then comes screaming into a wall and is just tedious after that point.

I was going to ask about Star Ocean 4, but I HATED Star Ocean: Till The End of Time, on the PS2, so I'm not sure if I should try 4.

What do you all think about The Club? The score mechanic looks really appealing. I was also thinking about picking up Tony Hawk's Project 8, but I've never played through a single Tony Hawk game in my life, so the learning curve scares me. But it looks fun.

Depends what you hated about SO3?

I'll just go ahead and let you know that the story is worse.

I'd say at least with the star ocean series the story sucks in all of them. Of all of them I thought 3 had the best twist at least. Gameplay wise, 4 takes everything awesome about 3 and throws it out the window, in the 360 version you can't even willfully target your opponents, the AI is horrendous, and all enemies gain super armor if you try to combo them. Most bosses require a quirky weakness abuse (sounds great on paper but poorly executed due to the toned down gameplay). If you hate Star Ocean 3's combat, well 4's is probably 20x worse.

I might buy one just to play limbo. Maybe i'm nuts.

Perhaps i'll download Rez HD to make it more worth while.

^ Braid was pretty good also. Theres the "sequel" to Rez coming this fall. There's enough games on xbla by now to make anybody happy. Play Skate instead of Tony Hawk.
