Gradius Gaiden Loops

I just received my import of Gradius Gaiden and am enjoying it thoroughly. I was wondering, however, if somebody can tell me at which loop the difficulty maxes out at.

While I'm not sure about the difficulty, the stage select counter maxes out at loop 8. I would assume the difficulty maxes at the 8th loop as well.

Interesting.......so what happens at the end of loop 8 then? Are there actually more (repeat) loops but the stage select counter doesn't count them or what? Cheers for the info.

More repeating loops after loop 8(yes I have tried it), but the stage select counter is up to 8 at max.
