Albert Odyssey - Legend of Eldean (Saturn)...

Post by ST Dragon »

I just run across a site about Albert Odyssey - Legend of Eldean for the Saturn...
http://www.flyingomelette.com/reviews/sat/albert.html

This is some of the best RPG Saturn graphics I've seen.
Does it play & sound as well as it looks?

The Battles seem to be turned based which a bit discouraging for my tastes though...
They should have made more Action based RPGs for the Saturn, PSX, Genesis & SNES...

Albert Odyssey is a great game - lovely music and stunning 2D visuals (some are turned off by the 2D hand-drawn art style but I much prefer it to the 3D RPGs out there). As an RPG, it's... okay-ish... not bad at all. Traditional turn-based fare and average story, but the music and visuals really bolster this one. I'd recommend it.

For a better turn-based 2D RPG on the Saturn, I'd recommend

Tengai Makyou: The Apocalypse IV - Saturn (1997)

which featuers some of the best visuals to grace the Saturn and is a wacky RPG that can be played with the Shift-JIS enabled walkthrough available at gamefaqs. It's also super cheap (read, US$10 or so) The link was posted recently, but here is a bit of info on TM-TA4:

http://www.classicgaming.com/reviews/tengai/tengai2.htm

For action RPGs... for the Saturn I'd suggest Magic Knight Rayearth. The import is easy enough to play if you've seen the Anime (and you should!) and if not, Working Designs did put out a US version (a bit more pricey - $10 for the import vs. $40+ for the US version).

The PSX had plenty of great RPGs ... but for action RPGs I'd suggest Legend of Mana (some of the best 2D visuals on the PSX) and Alundra (seems hard as heck so far but good... I'm only a short ways into it having just acquired it).

Is it a remake of the SNES Albert Odyssey?
Be attitude for gains:

And a shameless plug for the stuff I'm selling on eBay, if you're into that sort of thing.

I played Alunda 1 back in 1999 but I didn't like it.

Is Legend of Mana the Sequel of the SNES Secret of Mana?

Is this it?

This scene looks awesome!

The Graphics look amazing for a PS-1 game!

By the way, what's this tree supposed to be in LOM?
Is it like the Dekou Tree from Zelda?

And who are they?

Did LOM ever have an English Release?
I'll be definitely tracking this down for my old PS-1

Not directly... Secret of Mana was the 2nd in the Seiken Densetsu ("Legend of Holy Sword") series. The first was on the gameboy. Secret of Mana was really Seiken Densetsu 2 and was released Stateside to wide praise (and it's a great game!). The true sequel was only released on the SFC (japanese SNES) and is called, appropriately enough, Seiken Densetsu 3...

http://www.fantasyanime.com/mana/som2.htm

...and is an absolutely fantastic game that should have gotten a stateside release. Buy it and play it at all costs! (it's cheap - cart only is under $10 and complete it is only about $30). There is an english patch for it so you can buy the cart and play the patch if you so choose.

The pictures you show look like they are from the Japanese version but Legend of Mana was released in the US by Square-Enix in 2000 and is a sort of spiritual sequel to the Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana) series. Although it's still action-RPG oriented, it plays differently than SoM, is a bit more open ended and is not a true sequel but is nonetheless very good (though maybe a bit on the easy side)- and the lush 2D graphics on the PSX are godly. The game generally runs US$30 or so...

Albert Odyssey suffers from being VERY average. If you really like RPG's you'll like it, but the gameplay is repetitive, the story isn't terribly interesting, and the characters are all pretty much stereotypes.

If you just want to talk to townspeople and level up though, it's pretty satisfying.

I'm not positive, but I think that it's a sequel to it...IIRC it was released as "Albert Odyssey Gaiden" or something like that in Japan.

No, I'm pretty sure it's a port from the Super Famicom, with added effects/voice acting. I haven't played the SFC version, but that's what I've read.

Nah, it's a sidestory to the SNES games. That's what the 'Gaiden' subtitle usually means. But that makes the entire Ninja Gaiden series a little wierd.

The artwork for the first [SNES] game shows a hero that resembles an NPC in the Saturn game.

The game suffers not only from being amazingly average, but also being amazingly short. It's one of the smallest RPGs I've ever played.

Nice artwork, but otherwise there's nothing to recommend.

'Cause indeed that series is not originally called "Ninja Gaiden".

Legend of Eldean was going to be initially a SFC game but it ended being a SS one.

I bought Legend of Mana and was horribly dissapointed. Yes, the game is gorgeous. It looks FANTASTIC. But it's boring as hell. The battle engine (by far the most important gameplay element, as you spend so much time fighting) has been simplified, and the total absence of a real storyline (the game is just a bunch of bland mini-quests) drove me nuts. I expected better.

Seiken Densetsu 3 is fantastic though. Go buy that.

Well the only Adventure/RPGs I've completed & actually liked, were Zelda 1 (NES) & Zelda 3 (SNES) so I would like a similar Action based RPG.
What I liked about Zelda 3 was its length which was very satisfying, music & gameplay.
The graphics were cool as well.

Also here a nice list of "things you learn from RPGs"

I liked Albert Odyssey. Not the best thing on ye old Satty... but pretty much the only "traditional" style RPG you can get in the US. :?

Luckily there are plenty of other systems with better traditional RPGs. :P

There is one thing that Albert Odyssey has that most other RPGs seem to lack.... humor...... some of it is pretty tasteless though, but I love it. I used to play it every other year to get some laughs.

The game is pretty average though.

Well, that was mostly added by Working Designs. Play just about anything they've translated and you'll get the same thing. :P

Yep, those were the good ol' days. I noticed that starting with Alundra, their games started getting less and less funny though. I think a lot of people were complaining that the jokes were out of place and ruining the RPG experience for them hahahaha. What a shame.
