Cool things to do with PS3

Post by D »

I was able to use my pc as a media server and stream files from my pc.
It was a very easy setup. First I added my ps3 (which was recognized as an unknown device) In Windows mediaplayer and my pc automatically discovered the PS3. Do make sure upnp is on on your ps3.
But I'm looking into doing other cool stuff.
Are there any radio stations out there that work on ps3?
Youtube is a blast, you can just put several videos in a playlist and select play all, then don't full screen the video! Just zoom in and youtube will play all videos in your playlist.
Please share some cool things you can do with a PS3.
You can also download videos from internet and they will be listed under videos. Are there any apps you can download to run on your ps3 or are there any plugins you can download? most radiostations are either Realmedia or windows based.
The Xbox 360 is probably better for this kind of multimedia stuff, but I'm surprised at ps3's posibilities.

I know the PS3 can use Bluetooth headsets and webcams. I've not tried it myself but my friend said its full screen and has a very fast refresh rate. He said its like watching your friend on TV

If you want to convert movies from AVI/MPG/WMV into MP4 (it sounds like the PS3 can play any files anyway) or convert a youtube into MP4 -

Go here -

http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/guides/dvd/ ... -video.htm

Input - Youtube URL or C: location
Output - Where ever you want

Your PC hookup sounds interesting, but I've never done networking before so not sure how you went about it. Is there a tutorial somewhere?

Cheers mate.

hmmm your question
D wrote:Re: Cool things to do with PS3.
my answer
sell it and get 360 with an hdmi port (they are less likley to redlight right?) and a handfull of good games. lol

but seriousley theres just not enough good games for it to warrent a purchace for me. Dont care how much cool stuff you can do with it when you hack it or mod it. I dont have the know how to do these things as do most of the other PS3 owners  even like streaming media i would think it out of the reach of the genral public.

They still don't have 65nm chips, and even then there's the non-RROD issues that arent covered by the extended warranty . . .

As for what to do with your PS3, "all" i do with it is watch blu-ray + dvd, play vf, and play PSN / psx games. Which is sufficient to justify the purchase price to me. If you don't want a hi-def video player though, it's probably not worth it to you.

D If you're looking for something else to do on your ps3, install linux + mame & tell us what runs on it ;)

SCEA released fw 1.92 for USA PS3 console as of 9/04/07...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

SCEA quietly released it's latest firmware version of 1.92 for the USA region PS3 console -- some interesting upgrades including:

Being able to "zoom in or zoom out" of a chosen picture file by using both PS3's analog sticks -- borrows from what's already available on the PSP, of course when it comes to viewing such visual picture content... ^_~

You can now select a favorite pic and use it as a background scenery image when on the PS3 XMB menu selection screen...

You can also select "media server" on certain PS3 XMB selections -- interesting option indeed...

And there are a few other PS3 A/V related improvements as well...

And watch the poor PS3 break into a thousand pieces in the process...whee! And what fun it is...just watch a piece of uber-expensive console gaming hardware that one's ponied upwards in excess of $500 or $600 for and see it all go up in smoke just like that... ^_~

Or better yet, why not take a sledge hammer and with all your might, take a good whacking at a brand new boxed PS3 while you're at it...feels good, doesn't it? ^_~

Enough with the PS3 bashing/sarcasm -- still is a pretty impressive piece of gaming console as expensive as it may be... ^_~

----------------------------

Ever notice how hot the PS3 can become when powered up -- the factory installed cooling fan placed inside a PS3 seems not fit for the job, doesn't it not? Seems to get mighty hot IMO... ^_~

It was a joke obviously, smashing consoles is stupid...

Since I buy consoles for entertainment value I have no interest in paying money for potential. Consoles are defined by the games released on them, if PS3 gets good games then it will be a good console.

At this point I have no interest in "next-gen" but I do wish the PS3 would sell better so the price of the PS2 would come down.

One cool thing you could do is use it to download that stupid golf game for ps1 and then put it on your psp and then use it to make any ps1 rom psp compatible...

Build up some muscles (unlike the guys at SmashMyPS3) and SMASH that console. I was expecting it to be obliterated in one swing...

Or sell it and get your 599USD back, and buy yerself a PCB.

On movies too, hopefully? No zooming has been one of my biggest annoyances with using the PS3 as a blu ray player (same with PS2).

Besides which, the PS3 is an excellent heater. 5 degrees in 5 minutes in a 5 yard room guaranteed.

Here's the thread about using your pc as a media server.
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158357
As far as heat is concerned. I now have it standing vertical and it gets less hot. True that there is not even 1 good game for it. You see, I'm not a fan of vf. It's pretty rubish for a console besides playing ps2/ps1 games.

update. here's a cool site with cool house music to listen/download on your ps3:

main site: http://www.godeepmusic.com/fishgodeep.com/index.html
http://www.godeepmusic.com/fishgodeep.c ... index.html
http://www.godeepmusic.com/fishgodeep.c ... index.html
http://www.godeepmusic.com/fishgodeep.c ... index.html

What about analog support for PS1 games? There's the option to turn it onto analog, but none of my ps1 games register it as analog, I only get digital control. I tried with Ridge Racer Type 4.
Is there a trick to enable analog control?

Another cool trick is when you youtube and you get the network error, which happens alot with me, I press start twice which will refresh the page and you can continue!

Also it seems ps3 does not like hotmail live, so before upgrading think about that! I downgraded my hotmail and now it looks al weird!

lol. Ridge racer Type r4 didn't have analogue control via dualshock. Namco released a stupid volume controller thing for that. Meaning even a normal dualshock on a ps1 or ps2 wouldn't work either. This is the only game which does it, and you picked it

What an idiot I am :D
It also doesn't work with Side by Side Special 2000, but that title is so obscure I'm not surprised it isn't supported. But the strange thing is that in control option, you do see a dual analog controller displayed!
What if I buy one of those converters, can I play with me negcon on the ps3?
Also I registered on 4 ps stores:
Europe
Asia
Japan
US
Are there any other stores with different content?
It's probably save to say that no content will ever be added in the wekend right?

Re: Cool things to do with PS3

I've been playing around with PS3 media server today. It is the best media server for the PS3 so use this one if you don't already. -

You can download it here - http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/list

After a bit of poking around today I found out you can get worldwide radio streams through it. Then I found a program that scans all RSS feeds worldwide and the tags associated with them. I put them in the config file and voila, I have worldwide radio at my fingertips.

So I've uploaded the config file for you guys that want to try it. -

You can get the file here -

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z0HV5E4X

Go to program files > ps3mediaserver (put it here)

replace existing file which is quite small with my 6meg file.

Restart PS3Mediaserver.

XMB > Music > World-Radio

From there its self explanatory.. Bear in mind there are 1000's of entries, so it might take a while to display them.

I've also put a few video feeds in there, playboy from Germany, a few techie review sites, a G4 one..

Remember to be in the right XMB area when accessing. You might find a lot of stuff doesn't work, but a lot does..

You can actually edit the file as you please if you see something new thats not on the list.

If you have security issues writing to that directory (happened to me) just go to properties and allow your ID on your PC to have read write access.

I actually use PS3 Media Server all the time. I love being able to stream music directly from my PC, along with 720p anime and other stuff. Movies and so forth require a fairly strong PC though.

It's especially useful as my PC only has headphones connected to it, the AD700's. They're good for classical and celt music, which I listen to quite often, but they have absolutely no bass.

Anyway, the PS3 is slowly picking up. I really hope Vesperia gets localized soon, because despite playing through the game both in English and earlier this year in Japanese, I'd gladly play through it again.

Well, just messing about I have managed to now stream a few odd ball things. Icelandic volcanoes, BP oil spill, Sky sports...

Does anyone know of any mms streams worth linking?

I run mame, stella, and VLC on mine. VLC is perfect for older SD video files in various formats.

There's a "High-Spec" version of Gran Turismo that runs at a silky smooth arcade spec 60fps in 640 x 480 mode but it's interlaced & playable on the original PSX hardware. Unfortunately, it's just one track and one car to race with...it's still fun nevertheless.

Also check out the cool High-Spec version of Ridge Racer running at 60hz in 480i mode -- it came packaged with the bundled set of PSX R4; Ridge Racer Type 4.

I'd probably buy more PS1 classics if they didn't lag like shit on my HDTV. Hooking it up via an upscaler is fun until you try playing actual PS3 games, or games with forced widescreen.

Didn´t know about that high spec gran turismo version.
But I can confirm that the ps1 ridge racer 60 fps high spec turbo one track disc does not run very well on a ps3. graphic issues. Probably to do with the special resolution.
I would not be surprised if this also occurs with the gt high spec demo, which i didn´t even knew existed, thanks!
