All of the videos that Aksys posted of the US version have the characters speaking Japanese. However, full voice mode is clearly OFF in them: the Windia video shows the conversation between her and Sakura and there's no speach.MachineAres 1CC wrote:Seriously, why didn't they even roughly just translate the dialogue? This also makes me think they won't be including an original Japanese voice track, when it won't match up to the subtitles AT ALL. It'd be like a dubbed kung-fu movie where they're just saying random shit that has nothing to do with what's actually coming out of their mouthes. And if they do an English full voice to go with this....ugh. What. The. Hell.

Those have to be photoshopped right? Theres no way a game could have translation so bad... theres so little lines of text in this game and they couldnt find a japanese person to translate for them?
With a budget that small to work on the contents of the game, I wonder if there will be some bugs once we get our hands on it

Since Aksys has NEVER had a Japanese voice track which doesn't match up to the subtitles at all.MachineAres 1CC wrote:Seriously, why didn't they even roughly just translate the dialogue? Images are probably not photoshopped since they're directly linked off Aksys's website...Burningvigor wrote:Those have to be photoshopped right? As for the coding, I recall Cave saying on their blog that they did the coding on the localized version themselves, or something to that effect. We won't know who is directly responsible for the dialog until we see a credit list somewhere...
Re: Death Smiles coming to a North America near you! [Cave 2007]
Despite cringing at the first sight of these english screens, I think it is important to remember that Deathsmiles is basically a cute-em-up anyway. Also, if Deathsmiles is going to sell it is going to have to hit big with the trendy okaku, hot topic, adult swim crowd - many of whom actually talk like this IRL.

Oh my. Not sure what to think. Maybe they're going for people who liked Chrono Cross and Castle Shikigami III?
Re: Death Smiles coming to a North America near you! [Cave 2007]
I shot Aksys an email but have not heard back yet. Hopefully will soon. I for one don't think it matters if one character is French, American, Japanese, Purple etc. the translation should be in English considering it is for a NA release. That or include a language option for crying out loud. It is not like there are a lot of dialog scenes in the game.
"We" are used to horrid Engrish and Japlish in translation efforts, but it looks bad to the uninitiated, the people who are not hard core fans, the people who don't go out and import consoles and games.

Re: Death Smiles coming to a North America near you! [Cave 2007]
I don't really play this for story, though I can pick up the gist of the original dialog with the aid of the full voice DLC well enough, but I know that seeing stuff like this in the middle of my games might be distracting enough to throw me off my game. It definitely happened back when I tried to play the localized Castle of Shikigami 2...

It more has to do with your brain saying "that's not right."Dragoforce wrote:Wow, didn't realise so many of you played shmups for the story.
Well, that and it sets a bad impression. Fans of Cave and Deathsmiles will buy this. But these fans will not get the game flying off store shelves.

I can't help but respond with "Seriously?" Never once did the goofy ass translation in the US version of Shiki 2 have any effect on my playing.StarCreator wrote:I don't really play this for story, though I can pick up the gist of the original dialog with the aid of the full voice DLC well enough, but I know that seeing stuff like this in the middle of my games might be distracting enough to throw me off my game. By and large I think Death Smiles can't be compared to Castle Shikigami's localization. Shikigami 2 and 3 were so bad it was funny. DS on the other hand is in a weird spot where it's just not bad enough to be funny or cute.

All Shiki II ports let you ditch cutscenes entirely, luckily.

I have a very, very, VERY narrow attention span. A pixel in the wrong place on a character portrait would distract me almost as easily.Kiken wrote:I can't help but respond with "Seriously?" Never once did the goofy ass translation in the US version of Shiki 2 have any effect on my playing.

I don't really see this as any different from the Engrish we're used to from other games. The only difference is that it's English translators fucking with other languages this time around.
It's not stopping me from buying the game in the least.

It's kinda like watching a movie that constantly makes you feel embarrassed or humiliated for the on-screen characters.

I hate it when companies deviate from a source and alter things from their original content in such a way. When I read a translation of something, I know I'm not getting the complete picture due to lost idioms from the culture the text is being translated. But this is sickening, not even a lackluster translation, but a complete alteration. I pray that I am able to select the original Japanese text and voice overs. This move was pretty stupid of Aksys, considering how much they got right in releasing the game w/ all the content and the nice faceplate, ect....

Oh, I still plan on buying and enjoying the hell out of the game. Doesn't mean I can't laugh at how horrible that dialogue is.
The more I look at it, the more it cracks me up.

I know this has been discussed to death, but reading the retarded comments of gametrailers.com about Deathsmiles NA trailer reinforced the following impressions I have about the gaming community:
1. Shmups will NEVER be understood as they are supposed to.
2. What's with this gripe from the majority of US gamers seeing loli-based art design as pervert stuff? I don't fucking get it, jeez.
3. I'm a freak of nature, both for liking these games and for preferring retail releases over downloadable shit.
If this comes out region-free I'll get it.

Who the hell cares about translations.. remember Mobile Light Force 2? It could be worse.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. 2D is handled better than any other system you can get at home. I sure hope you're not basing this asshat statement off of the American trailers or screenshots.Rob wrote:What looks bad is 2D on a 360. 2. Colonize a land on puritan values and that's what you get. Plus Loli in the states generally implies quite underage. (Consent is 16-18 depending on state so sexualized minors are a major no-no)
3. $20 says these are the same bastards who refuse to buy a PSP Go for exactly the opposite reason.

I mean it looks bad to the "uninitiated". In comparison to something that uses the power of the console, like Mass Effect 2.MachineAres 1CC wrote:You've got to be fucking kidding me.
