Essential PCE/TG-16 shmups?
I've recently gotten into PCE shmups on my PSP, and I want to know what to look out for.
So far, I love:
Aeroblasters
Blazing Lasers
Magical Chase
the Star Soldier games (Final, Blade, Super, etc)
Raiden
R-type II
Salamander
Twinbee
Xevious
1943 Kai
these, i didn't like so much:
Dragon Saber
Cyber Core
Atomic Robokid
P-47
Darius Alpha
Final Blaster
these don't work:
Air Zonk
Gradius
Aldynes
Darius Plus

Break down & buy Turbo Express + HuCards = real thing!
It's better to play the real geunine Hu-Card setup by either buying an NEC GT or a USA Turbo Express with a Hu-Card convertor (although a Hu-Card convertor will set you back another $100 U.S. dollars). Of course, going with that particular portable gaming setup nowdays, can monetary set back a gamer who is just getting their feet wet with the PC Engine/Turbo Grafx-16 retro gaming scene.
It's cool that you can adjust the Sony PSP's CPU speeds from 222MHz, 266MHz or even 333MHz -- at the expense of a faster draining PSP battery life...it's your choice to play the Hu-Card emulation at a slower speed (for longer PSP battery life) or to play Hu-Card emu at a faster frame-rate (which results in shorter PSP battery life). This is refering to the "PC Engine Emulator for the PSP Version 1.7" program, of course.
Air Zonk played on the real PCE/TG-16 hardware will be shmupper's heaven as it's been developed to run at it's full potential.
Magical Chase is truly a dazzlingly gorgeous shmup played on the real hardware (of course, be prepared to spend upwards of $250.00 U.S. dollars for a used copy of U.S. version of TTI's Magical Chase as it was the very last American Hu-Card to be released from Turbo Technologies Incorporated themselves -- hence the high prices it fetches on the secondary retro gaming market nowdays). Back in 1994, one could buy a brand new copy of TTI's Magical Chase for a mere $19.99 U.S. dollars at USA based Toys-R-Us stores (back then, it wasn't known that the U.S. version of Magical Chase was going to be produced in such low numbers that it would fetch a very "pretty penny" nowdays).

The newest version of Hue (.531) has some compatibility issues (see above), but what it does play, it plays very well. The author has managed to harness the GPU to do screen resizing, so you can play in 4:3 zoomed mode (takes up the entire height of the screen, and most of the widith, while retaining the proper aspect ratio) with no noticably slowdown.
That said, I'd love to pick up a TurboDuo with a hue-card converter (that seems to be the most broadly compatible system) when my budget allows.

If your budget allowed you to get a PSP, I'm sure you would eventually be able to get a TG-16/PCE/GT/TE.
Seriously though, skip the buggy emus and go for the real deal (I recommend a modded Duo for starters or a TG-16 or TE/GT). I have a PSP but I still prefer playing my old school Turbo and Nintendo games on their respective systems. I sometimes bring my Turbo Express and converter to work and play Kyukyouku Tiger, Twinbee, Gradius, and Parodius in the office...bug free bliss.

To each their own, then.Cthulhu wrote:Magic Engine for Windows is nearly perfect. Considering I'm on a budget (the PSP was my tax return), I'd rather support Cave directly by buying a copy of Mushi new than to support some Ebay seller by dropping the same amount of money on Hue-cards.Dylan1CC wrote:To each their own, then.Cthulhu wrote:Magic Engine for Windows is nearly perfect. Fair enough. I have had my Turbo games for quite a few years, if I was starting out I would pick Mushi first too.Metal Gear Okt wrote:Considering I'm on a budget (the PSP was my tax return), I'd rather support Cave directly by buying a copy of Mushi new than to support some Ebay seller by dropping the same amount of money on Hue-cards.Dylan1CC wrote:To each their own, then.Cthulhu wrote: Magic Engine for Windows is nearly perfect. But you can't play 5 player Bomberman '94 matches with your friends on your PSP.

ah, ah, ah. Party Bomberman matches must be played on a TV. Sorry. Until they make a PSP wifi Bomberman...and an online Bomberman is on the way for DS next year. whooMetal Gear Okt wrote:well, not yet at least.Dylan1CC wrote:Fair enough.
