Unknown Sci-Fi / Horror film... (Life Force)

Post by ST Dragon »

In summer 1994, I saw on TV a sci-fi horror film. I vaguely remember the plot going like this:

Some astronauts in a space-shuttle find an alien space-ship with some humanoid aliens in stasis (one alien was female which later has a relation with one of the male astronauts). They recover them and bring them back to earth and then all hell brakes loss. Those aliens are actually some kind of demonic race and turn the human population into zombie-like / un-dead beings, while the alien ship which is in orbit around earth, unfolds into an umbrella shape and begins to absorb the human life force. Towards the end of the film one of the demon / aliens is seen standing over a pile of dead bodies with flames all around him as he unfolds his demon-like wings and the astronaut kills him by sticking a metal spike into his chest.
In the end the male astronaut leaves earth with the female alien using the umbrella ship.

My guess is that it was released before 1990, but I can not remember the name.

If anyone knows the name of the film, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

Life Force!! That’s it!

It's cool how the title is actually shoot em up oriented. I wonder if Konami was influenced by this film?
I didn't expect anyone to actually remember this film. I see it's older than I thought (1985). Interestingly Patrick Stewart plays in it.

Does anyone like this film? I thought it was so cool back then and was so scared when I watched it, as I was quite young!! Lol!! :) :D
I just checked the info and it turns out that those aliens were vampire / bat-like not demons.

Lifeforce was an interesting sci-fi/horror hybrid film...the Queen alien creature (French actress Mathilda May) looks great in her curveous birthday suit, doesn't she? ^_~

It was director Tobe Hooper whom directed this film btw. The special effects were all done in real time & none of that fake CG special EFX either. There's one key scene where blood flows outward from a victim's eyes and mouth forms into the Queen alien creature and eventually loses it's shape only to collapse into a bloody pool. Some pretty impressive EFX ideas/concepts indeed.

Have you checked out Clive Barker's Nightbreed horror film circa 1990? I noticed that it borrowed some ideas and concepts from his earlier novels like "The Great And Secret Show" & "Everville". Even his short novella, The Hellbound Heart, was the basis for the eventual 1987 released Hellraiser film (with the iconic Pinhead and fellow Cenobites for company along with the ever so present Lament Configuration Box). The 1988 released Hellraiser II: Hellbound horror film sequel was even better in the special EFX department to help carry/progress the story along.

It'd be interesting to see a live action film version of Barker's fanasty/sci-fi themed Imajica novel but so many supporting characters end up dying left & right. It would require lots of special EFX to help move the story along. One interesting concept mentioned in Imajica, is that a certain character's house has super tall ceilings that are so high that clouds form and sometimes rain and thunder happens within these huge rooms.

I can't find footage of Patrick Stewart in this letting out a high pitched scream and vomiting up an alient.. or I think that's what happens in it

Well, basically (If memory serves me right), she's mostly naked throughout the film! :0 Lol
The 1988 released Hellraiser II: Hellbound horror film sequel
No wait! Doesn't that film end up in an obscure space-station and this hell-dog is chasing them around trying to eat them, but gets blown out the air-lock instead?

If so, I would love to see that part again! ;)

And as for Clive Barker's books. Is the game "Undying" actually based on a book and is the game any good compared to other fantasy FPS like Heretic, Hexen, Witchaven, etc...?

It's not based on books, he just came up with the story/scenario. You should play it. Undying is awesome adn it's a real fucking shame that series never got off the ground.

Pandorum was good. High science fiction, with a surpisingly tight plot.
( read as: not the b-movie I expected, it was a mix of ghost of mars and event horizion..I liked it)

This. The game kind of has its own analogue to the Xen levels from Half-Life (i.e. less satisfying than the main game) but overall it's very good, and it kind of boggles my mind to think how expansive it is. Unreal engine so there's nice wide outdoors areas, some of the best artistic uses of the Unreal engine are seen in this game too (a certain lake, oh gosh).

This being said, I guess that Jericho is a sort-of sequel, in some ways. I heard it was really claustrophobic though, and of course the setting is all different - the only similarity is really that there is sort of the same ideas about the occult and stuff like that.

Well I've never completed Half Life 1 back in the day, (I got bored after 2-3 hours...and the graphics did suck even for their time in comparison to Unreal 1), so I've never seen the notorious Xen stage. I was hoping for the Black Mesa Source update to be released and experience it at its fullest.... but I guess we'll just have to wait then wont we? ;)

There is a cool looking lake in Undying?

As for "Jericho"... I've never heard of this game. Is it any good and when was it released? Links?

Thanks in advance

That would not have necessarily been for the better. Remember that Unreal 2 palled in comparison to the 1st game.

So, apart from Konami's notorious shooter, is there any other game similar to this film? Plot, story-line, characters, monsters, space-ship, graphics, effects, etc...?

That would be taken from the Hellraiser 4: Bloodlines film with the giant space station transforming in a huge Lament Configuration Box (LCB) to trap Pinhead and his fellow Cenobite cronies. It also shows how the mechanical LCB puzzle device was constructed/crafted by a master clockwork genius entirely by hand.

The Hellraiser II: Hell Bound film continues the on-going story arc between Ashley and Pinhead from the original Hellraiser film. The third film sequel of Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth is a self parodizing film and really doesn't take it self too seriously despite Pinhead & company making a return appearance. The third time's the charm.

In Barker's short novella, The Hellbound Heart, there's mention of several methods of calling forth the Cenobites including a elaborate origami with folds so intricate & exquisite besides gaining access with the elusive LCB puzzle itself. The Hellraiser films only deals with the LCB puzzle itself though as the proper gateway access to terror and experiencing pain beyond human limits unbeknownst to the victim(s) stupid/careless enough to gain access/solve it. Hence, the lamenting for eternity for solving it in the first place.

Both Hellraiser and Hellraiser II have been released in Blu-Ray format...check them out if you haven't done so.

The difference is that Undying was planned as a series and Clive Barker had come up with storylines and concepts for for a couple of games.. If I remember correctly, it reviewed well when it came out but there was no multiplayer mode and it was released during the PC multiplayer FPS heyday, so it was DOA in stores. EA shitcanned the followups because of the sales. It's a lot of squandered potential.

I think Jericho came out in 2007. It received mediocre reviews, but I enjoyed it. Its main gimmick is that you control a team of six specialists in various weapons and magical arts, switching between them on the fly. The Clive Barker influence shows mostly in the gore, as the story and characters are rather plain. A decent FPS, but not an all-time classic.

As for Life Force, I enjoyed the first act, as it seems that was where all the budget went. Once the spaceship scenes were over and the zombies went from animatronics to make-up effects, it was like watching a completely different (cheaper and weaker) movie.

.
You control multiple players? Is this game anything like "Left 4 Dead"?
I tried that game for 30mins and thought it sucked so badly! Removed it straight away!

That umbrella space ship in Life Firce, looked very much like the planet destroyers in Gall Force 2 & 3 Anime
