mvs 1 slot in a custom cab?
mvs 1 slot in a custom cab?
Ive started to build a custom cabinet and was wondering what it would take to make a mvs 1 slot to run on a 17" pc lcd? Ive found that a mvs board outputs picture in RGB, so I would need a RGB to VGA board to make that happen.
but what else do I need? surely I would need something to wire my sticks and buttons to the mvs board control input interface? and what about sound? I have both pc stereo speaker and carspeaker+mini amp combo. whats easier to use and what do I need?
these are the parts I have right now:
2x seimitsu ls32 stick
a crapload of HAPP buttons
17" TFT monitor
a partly built tabletop cabinet

You'd just need an Micomsoft produced XRGB-2 upscan convertor that'll convert low-res 15kHz signal into high-res 31kHz VGA signal. You'll also need a supergun wired up to standard Jamma spec with 21-pin Japanese RGB pinout setup (which the XRGB-2 accepts).
Any pics of what the semi-completed tabletop cab looks like?
Or if you really want a true low-res RGB monitor setup for a tabletop or bartop based cab, you can pick up a Sony 9" CPD-9000 RGB monitor...playing Neo-Geo MVS games on it is super razor-sharp & crystal clear (compared to playing it on a traditional 9" CRT-based TV monitor with composite video or S-Video input at best).

Just get an inexpensive upscaler from eBay instead of that expensive one. You won't get scanlines, but for a dedicated MVS cabinet, the xRGB2 is a bit over the top.

yea thats what I was looking for. now I just need to figure out the sound part?emphatic wrote:Just get an inexpensive upscaler from eBay instead of that expensive one. You won't get scanlines, but for a dedicated MVS cabinet, the xRGB2 is a bit over the top.

supergun eh? got to look into that. is there complete assemblys available?
no pics of the project yet. Ive only cut the boards but its modeled after this:

http://www.vogatek.com/ is a nice product for your project. You'll just need this, a power supply, controls and that upscaler and you should be able to plug any PCB or JAMMA mobo into your small table top cabinet. I would make the control panel flip open, like on candy cabs, and you could have the upscaler placed beneath it so you can easily adjust the video settings. Put the supergun inside the back of the cabinet and some mounting for an MVS or a PCB.1up wrote:supergun eh? got to look into that. is there complete assemblys available?

I can personally vouch for the upscaler in the first link. It's what I use, and it works great with my MVS.emphatic wrote:Just get an inexpensive upscaler from eBay instead of that expensive one. You won't get scanlines, but for a dedicated MVS cabinet, the xRGB2 is a bit over the top.

Re: mvs 1 slot in a custom cab?
awesome!
Im going cheap, so im going to skip the XRGB2.
these items is what I need?
Arcade supergun motherboard MK III
Arcade RGBS CGA/EGA/YUV TO 2 VGA CONVERTER
and a power supply like this one: Power Supply
that super gun board also gets me sound right? and it looks like it has screw-ins for the controllers?
edit:
after reading the description I got the answers

Sorry, forgot to write you'll need speakers as well.

I've never seen one of those supergun boards. Are they basically a JAMMA harness on a board?

Yep, you're right. Basically a no-frills Jamma PCB for your hobbyists needs or DIY projects.

You'll also need a SCART cable, of course. You'll probably wind up chopping one end off.1up wrote:these items is what I need?
When you're shopping for the upscaler, you may want to look around for one that comes with a pre-wired plug for the video input. Mine didn't, but I've seen them around. It's not a dealbreaker, but it makes things just a little bit easier.
Re: mvs 1 slot in a custom cab?
do I only need the upscaler because I want to connect to a pc monitor? I see that the supergun has a scart-out, so if I was to hook it up to a regular tv instead, an upscaler wouldnt be needed?

yup.if you were going to use a scart t.v then no upscaler needed and you also eliminate any lag problems that may entail from using an lcd.
oops just realized you were probably planning on using an lcd tv with scart input..
i've heard bad reports about using superguns on lcd tvs so you might still need an upscaler or something.

Re: mvs 1 slot in a custom cab?
I'd recommend the MV-1B or MV-1C as they are the smallest Neo-Geo board sets. You can even hide a small upscaler under the plastic housing. The carts are horizontal in the 1B and vertical in the 1C. The 1C would mount to the bottom of the cab and the cart would stick up vertically letting you open a back door and easily change carts.
Just beware of surface mount BIOSes if you want a UniBIOS and lack of controller ports for AES style sticks - but I don't think that stick issue will matter in your case. You can use the JAMMA edge connector for hooking those up.
Of course, changing a cart would be a non-issue if you used one of those multi-carts.
