They're too slow to be a stimulant though. Save that for Psikyo. :P

I tried to tell my wife I played better when I was cold once. What a dick!

I had all the windows open in winter, which is just something I tend to do when I'm home alone. My lovely wife returned, and asked why I had them open. I just reacted like a kid caught doing something naughty, and made up the reason on the spot. "I play better when I'm cold". That was stupid, but in the moment, I convinced myself it was true...

"What are you talking about? Shmups have great graphics!"

Guy in class: So are you gonna get project natal when it comes out?
Me: No, it looks boring. I can't imaging playing shmups using motion detection.
Guy: Ummm.. what?

"No, it's difficult, but not the hardest genre of gaming. I'd say puzzle games are far harder than shmups." (Serious about this one)

"Xbox360 is better than PS3 because of all the Cave shmups on it!" (I said this jokingly, knowing that particular class had tons of PS3 fanboys.)

My many ragequit moments while playing Thunder Force 3 through 5 (Admittedly, part of why I ragequit TF3 so much is because people on a certain forum gave me shit for not being able to 1CC it for several days.).

Actually, any shmup that people claim is piss easy when I'm struggling with it makes me want to ragequit.

I absolutely refuse to say shmup out loud. It's a very strong aversion. So instead I just call them shooters, and then everybody thinks I'm taking about, surprise, a first or third person shooter. This is on top of the difficulty of even getting them to understand what a shmup is anyway.

If I'm talking to someone about Raiden, I tend to pronounce it "Rye-den" and get weird looks, and am forced to switch to "Ray-den" to (hopefully) get them to recognize what I'm talking about.

Why, just today one of my friends challenged all the scary Japanese text from Futari in my 360's game list. What I wanted to say was that although it appears to be quite a weird and frivolous game, it's actually really engaging - certainly more hardcore than most of what he played. What I actually said, however, was something along the lines of: "Yeah it's pretty crazy - it is pretty gay with all those flying insects and dragon things, but it's really quite manly. Do you want to borrow it?"

"Er... no thanks."

So you enjoy being misunderstood? You're weird.

Am I the only person that has difficulty discussing a game with anybody else if the title is in Japanese? Talk about making zero effort to even remember the name of something.

A friend of mine half-jokingly asked me about that "Nicaragua" game he'd been hearing about in 2002. It became an inside joke among us for a bit.

Hehe...my sister walked in on me while I was playing Edens Aegis..."Why's a girl in a mini-skirt flying around shooting those things?" she asked and my only answer was "Japenese people are weird!" :D

I also get slightly worrying looks when I start talking about my sim-racing hobby :)

That sounds about the same for me. I'm the main shmup fan out of my circle of friends. I get a few of them to try them sometimes. They try not to credit feed when possible since I usually try to avoid setting the game to free play (when possible).

I'm the opposite, I refuse to say shooters when referring to shmups since everyone thinks FPS like you said. I find it annoying but people I know are actually picking up on it. A friend saw my copy of Shooting Love and looked at the back and said "Oh, this is one of those shmup games, right?"

I think my job is done :P

that's ridiculous

just use the excuse I use:

"it's Japanese, what do you expect?"

people silently understand and it's never brought up again.

Me: "So I have this really fun Japanese shooting game we can play."
Friend: "Sure, let's check it out."
*Boots up Deathsmiles*
My friend spots the hentai-riffic splash screen...
Friend: "uhhh.."
Me: "Yeah, I know! Don't judge a book by its cover!"

This has happened more than once, but at least they had fun with the actual game afterwards.

My wife delights in taking the piss out of me playing Deathsmiles, and I have to agree with here, cause I don't like that loli shit one bit. I don't have an excuse...

Oh - and taking the piss is a UK colloquialism for 'mocking'; not something as perverse as lolis.

My buddy and I quote Rob's "Ikaruga Pro Review" in public quite often. It raises a couple eyebrows but no one has actually asked one of us about it yet.

I wonder if other people on this forum do the same?

Unfortunately I'm surrounded by xenophobic twats. Taking a stance of indifference involves listening to cartoonishly bad chinese voices talking about freaky japanese tentacle-loli porn and "sucky sucky 5 dolla".

Fortunately they shut the fuck up and let me concentrate once they see all of the bullets and realize shit has gotten serious.

Friend : "Why would you play these kinds of games ? It's so damn hard. It sucks"
Me : "You suck, not the games"

Well maybe that's the only proper response >_>

I don't even call them shoot'em ups to non game players anymore

I say the only thing they want to hear:

"it's like Galaga but crazier"

that works every single time

every now and then, I'll say an Ikaruga type game and they'll know

it's pretty crazy how some people know that game, because these games are NOTHING like Galaga, but it's like the first game to pop into their heads when they see me playing them.
