Name this shmup based on my description

Post by Mad Mage »

I played this in the 50yen Osaka arcade on the main Den Den town street. It's vertical and takes place around the Edo period, so you shoot lotsa japanese demons. All levels are on the ground with your character running around the auto scrolling level. (like Mamoru-kun, I guess). I could describe the shot system, but that probably won't help if you already don't know what it is. Oh yeah, the graphics are 2D. The game is probably not more than 5 years old.

I think the reason I can't remember the name is that it was in Kanji, even on the title screen. I've been to a lot of arcades and I'm really surprised to have never seen the awesome shmup anywhere else ever. No, I don't remember who made it.

What immediately came to my mind is Guwange
In an alternate universal, Soldier Blade II has already been crafted by Hudson Soft and Compile with proper tate this time around (c) PC Engine Fan X!
Sega tried and failed. Nintendo didn't even try. (c) Specineff

Lol, I thought the same too. Since ground-based + Japanese demons = Guwange.

youtubing Guwange... yup that's it.

Damn, I really want to play this again. Any chance we will ever see a port? It feels so innovative. I can't believe this was made all the way back in 1999.

And yeah, I've heard the name Guwange tossed around when people are talking about awesome shmups, nice to have a picture to the name finally. Thanks

Guwange isn't written with kanji.
Maybe you mean Vasara?

Final Burn Alpha emulates it perfectly

Oh yeah, this was like a year ago, so my memory may be a little fuzzy. Regardless of whether the name was written in kanji or kana, after looking at pictures and videos of Guwange, I'm sure that's what I played.

That right? What kinda computer would I need to be in business? Actually, I take that back. With all the great shmups for 360 right now, I don't need to go out of my way to emulate stuff. Glad to know there's the option to do so though.

Luckily in my area there's still one machine for Guwange... in a kiddy arcade, of all places
