Congrats mate, on your 1CC!

I remember when I 1cc Gradius the first time. It took me about a week of serious play on it... on my best run I managed to get at 2-5 , but I never beat the 2nd loop of it. I still think the original Gradius is an awesome game.

The series IMO goes like that:

V > Gaiden > II > I - III - IV

Gaiden is really utterly awesome, and it's the pinnacle of the Gradius gameplay. Everyone should play it someday.

And about V, it's pretty much what Herr Schatten said, V plays nothing like the other Gradius games, so you may or may not like it. I think it's one of the very few games where he and me disagrees about :) I find it to be one of the best shmups ever done in history.

You'll do it in a week, mate. It's a nice, breezy game, and the handful of trickier sections tend to come pretty early on (for me, the hardest points in the game are in levels three and four, but only if you happen to die there, and the rest requires the merest suggestion of practice). Salamander's probably no more difficult, in the main, but it has a really capricious boss that can halt your progress completely if you don't fancy learning a number of belaboured and joyless methods of getting past it. :P

Edit: ah, actually, Gradius II does have a difficult boss (stage 3's), but he can be completely neutered by just flying between his arms and sitting right in front of his core.
Thanks for the vote of confidence and the advice on Gradius II and Salamander. :)

Me and my friend are on now week 4 of our Gradius competition and are currently tied (we're both using the PSP collection). So far I've won for Gradius I and III (which we only each submitted one score on haha) and he's won for Gradius II and IV. Right now we're on day 2 for Gaiden which we are extending into a two week competition, it's already really heated, best game in the series.

I've been playing the series for about 15 years now off and on. I didn't start really getting into trying to 1CC the first game off and on until about 4 years ago.

V is a great game but IMHO Gaiden edges it out for overall enjoyability and as I mentioned before, sheer variety.

I'd love to try some of the crazy loops on V but I don't know if I'll ever have the patience to beat it 256 times. :P
