Excuses for embarising deaths in gradius

Post by popawell »

Everyone has to have some excuse for dying in some stupid way.
(I heard its called stupid death sindrome)
Everyone has at least once done one of these:

One too many speedups (ending up hitting a wall, little ship, or boss)

Hit a wall

Have the wall hit you (I hate that)

die when boss has 1hp left (red core)

option stealer strip your arsenal and resulting in a death by panic or enemy

Die from the flying bathroom tiles (last level of most gradius games)

And this unique one that I had to put up with: In the NES version of life force, a player can steal one of your lives by pressing A and B at once. Having him or her do so resulting in you losing your last remaining extra life and then instantly getting killed from something.

And my excuse for most of these is:
I sneased, I droped the controoler, I ment to do that.

Bad ones, very bad. Im not very creative.

So what are your SDC excuses?

Having to scratch an itch, therefore taking your eyes off the screen for one second, only for that damned stray bullet to hit you.

Also forgetting about the pink membranes growing back, and casually flying my way through a gap I shot through it (I'd try to stay back on the screen), only for the membrane to grow right back on my ship, especially aggravating in Gradius 3 right before the final boss.

Wasn't there a thread about this already?

In any case, in Gradius V, a friend of mine rammed into the brain while it was talking at the end.

I've rammed into the Gaiden Brain . It almost seemed like I did it on purpose.

I never though about excuses for shmups, know plenty for fighting games though. :P

Hmmm... Let's think of something, how about these:

"In Gradius, the bullets are bad colored, you can't see them on this backgorund"

"The Rank is too high, it shouldn't be like this to that point."

"The Pad/Stick is not working correctly, I just moved down, but it continued to go up."

in 2P mode:

"I was looking at your weird movements, that make me die."

"I am too much concerned about helping you staying alive, this way I couldn't destroy all enemies attacking me."

"You stole my Power Ups, well done! This way we are both going to die."

(and if you stole his Power Ups)
"I need them to protect you, with you powered up, we'll only end up dying"

Can't think of any others right now, but there should be plenty. ;)

Playing fighting games with unknown opponents is fun alone from their new excuses. Sometimes you really hear some weird stuff.

I wear contacts, and they always get dry after staring at the screen for long periods of time in high-concentration games like shooters and driving games. This really sucks when you start drinking and gaming. :/

So I have to pause to blink when my eyes get blurry, and that ALWAYS breaks my concentration. I wish I didn't have contacts, so I could see what I'm really like at some of these games.

Oh, and the walls always run into me when I start doing well in Gradius. Always.

This is the main reason why I die so often in the Gradius series.

I don't know why, but I die a lot vs. those stupid falling ice blocks on stage 2 of Gradius Generations. I'll just be shooting away and then I'll forget that I just shot the last support holding up the ceiling above me. Also, in that game I tend to take a lot of hits (not die) because I forget that the force field makes your hitbox bigger.

I often hit the bottom wall when trying to snag powerups.

Not used to going Backwards in a shmup.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I once died in Gradius V by getting past the blast door in Stage 2, looking away for 2 seconds to help someone with a word processor that was about 3 feet away...looked back, Paniced...and then went FORWARDS into the eye.

Other embarasing deaths are far into the past...where my 7 year old brain froze whenever it saw a bullet flying toward the ship, and did NOTHING to prevent it.
currently collecting a crapload of coasters, carts, controllers, and consoles

I almost always die immediately after collecting one too many powerups (or 2 right on top of eachother), making the bar loop back to speed up. It makes me lose all hope, especially when I don't already have a force field.

Oh definitely. It's even worse at the arcade, because I can't pause. When both eyes are blurred at the same time(thank goodness it doesn't happen often) it really sucks. At least when one eye gets blurred(mostly my left) I can still see out of the other.

I have lost a life(not Gradius though) because this girl standing next to me smelled extremely wonderful, and highly distracting. :)

It happened at the last level and messed up my plan, but I didn't feel that bad. But she saw it though.

I, on the other hand, have lost enough lives to form a football (read:soccer) leagues by being distracted by my mother (who is enamoured of shmup graphics and character design  ).

Too many speed-ups.

Distracted by phone/doorbell

Tried to sip water between stages, spilled water on self...died as a result.

Haven't played a lot of Gradius, but I keep fooling myself that when I die in Garegga, it's because I want to decrease the rank :)
