I'm not sure if anything needs a Twitter feed, but I'm a moaning cantankerous technophobe.

Honestly, crap like Twitter has just tricked us ordinary people into thinking our lives are interesting enough to tell everybody about it all the time, when really most of us live inconsequential, mundane lives in reality.

While I readily admit a Shmups Twitter is a nice idea, that bloody concept generally just promotes boastful self-obsession hidden behind a thin veil of the idea of community. As if we need yet another way to spend (waste) time 'communicating' instead of being part of real communities. By the time I've phoned, texted, emailed, facebooked, PM'ed and twittered everybody, I've got no time to actually do things to tell people about.

And as for datamining and the like - honestly.

I'm half tempted to think it was just invented to make newspapers and PR and marketing companies feel trendy. Pricks...

And people who are interested in when celebrities are taking a shit need to... oh fuck it... I'm only going to be insulting and I'm probably wrong, but +1 for the Twitter Nuke....

Cool idea. I've not been "tweeting" long, but it's fun once in a while to post something goofy for a couple friends. I am glad I checked this out - planning on taking the plunge for a Wii this "Wiikend" (LOL) and knowing that I can get Shiki 3 and Ultimate Shooter Collection (Radio Allergy & Karous, woot!) on the cheap is excellent! Thanks guys!

Twitter is so fucking gay, nobody cares what you have to say. You may as well write something on a piece of papre and throw it in the ocean, it's not like people will reply. If you want to talk about shmups, try a Gaming Blog. There are already reputable blogs that mention shmups, like Kotaku.

I don't use Twitter, but I like this. It distills Shmups Chat down to the bare essentials. Since I spend more time reading OT, I'm sure I miss out on news items that get buried in 20 page threads or bumped off the front page by too many "Best laser sprite in a shmup?" threads.

Thanks to all that contribute to this!

'ssssSup.

I should probably be following twitter accounts of developers and other relevant offshoots, but searching them out is kinda cumbersome. Ok, it probably isn't but I figured I'd ask you guys first. Would the people happen to know of the relevant developer twitter accounts and other people who post replays of the games of the genre we like?

Thanks in advance

I haven't actively browsed/used this forum in many years and it's no longer an accurate representation of me.

http://twitter.com/UFO_Interactive UFO Interactive has one, although it's rarely updated.

http://twitter.com/rockinandroid Rockin' Android also has one; they released the doujin games Flying Red Barrel and Suguri, with more to come, it seems.

And... I have one. I got one because an English Prof. of mine had one, and I wanted to be up-to-date on everything faster than e-mail. I'm routinely entertained by one of my friend's amazingly HILARIOUS bus rides to and from college. It's like... epic... My life is boring with bits and pieces of my humor, and sending news to friends that are too lazy to follow the shmups twitter account. XD

Ahoy-ahoy, announcements 'n things!

I'm totally getting married in a few days. I am going to become so awesome, I'll be useless to the internet for a few weeks.

If Elixir or Topher or the other good people with the keys can pick up my slack on all the small stuff you see on me brizzly posts, that should be fine and good.

And congrats to everyone for the 500+ followers. Hooray for hub-hack stock-ticker ghetto-journalism!

It's a giant data mining bandwagon application (check the privacy policy), which is now tragically trendy.
The same rehashed "progress is backward and makes us dumber argument". Twitter is actually the only decent social 2.0 bogallo thanks to it's easy way to get rid of spam annoyance and irrelevant "John Doe is know single" updates" because with twitter, you only follows what interests you.

Now if you don't want to get data mined you have to stop using: Google, your cellphone, your credit cards, etc.

TL;DR, good initiative.

I like Twitter. It's been very useful for me. Game developers updating us on release dates, Fixing bugs updates. News on new games. Majornelson is a good one. I don't like Myspace or Facebook not my thing.

Would it be wrong for an oncologist to oppose the progress of a tumor? Or perhaps the progress in the design of a self-propelled gas chamber in Chile? Bloodflower justified his opposition by pointing people to twitter's privacy policy and if you don't care that is fine. That said, your rehashed* counter-argument against his has no justification:
cul wrote:Twitter is actually the only decent social 2.0 bogallo thanks to it's easy way to get rid of spam annoyance and irrelevant "John Doe is know single" updates" because with twitter, you only follows what interests you.
Twitter could fart out gold bullion to its users everyday and you still wouldn't have anything to put forward that counters bloodflower's opposition to it.
cul wrote:Now if you don't want to get data mined you have to stop using: Google, your cellphone, your credit cards, etc.
Google -- yes indeed, you will get "datamined" every time you use their products. So we've established that, if one is opposed to data mining, they should probably take some care when using said products. This is of little concern though, since there are many alternatives to spread your data around with.

Cellphone -- at this level if your concern is law enforcement, I think you will find that simply having a battery in your phone is enough to get yourself "datamined", lol. If it's something more serious, like negotiating a international bid for example, using a cellphone is down right silly. Here's a spoiler: the national security agencies of the world have already cracked all utilised encryption schemes. Want a work around? PM me and I'll hook you up.

Credit card -- there are ways around this one of course, if you are indeed in Switzerland you should know of a few.

So again, where is the progress you speak of and more importantly, towards what? You acknowledge the active data mining all around you but then lash out at those opposing it without reason. It's an amusing sight to behold and so very repetitive. Not that I care about the datamining of the populace -- unless I want to compete with twitter in this lucrative market -- I just thought I’d point out that your position is unattainable from what you have put forward.

* Because a correct argument, when put forward more than once, becomes less correct, lol.

Ha! What an arse. As many of you know I now use Twitter fairly regularly. At least I'm open minded to changing my perspective! My workmate introduced me to the concept of it as a 'shared thought bubble', and frankly, working as a journalist, in that context it's great. The games industry certainly uses it to share ideas, source news, make contact with people and of course mock each other. Hell, I have Twitter to thank for enabling me to get in contact with Cave so I could interview them.

The shmups Twitter feed is a great way to get news when I'm at work and don't have much time for the forum, and it's introduced me to a ton of new indie shooters.

But I still think the word Tweet is horrid, and I do cringe at some of the bullshit I put on Twitter!

On to more important things... Congratulations DJ Incompetent! Getting married is fucking excellent. I hope it is a shit load of fun for you and Mrs Incompetent!

EDIT: To whoever runs the Shmups Twitter now (Incompetent, Elixir, others?); thanks so much! Awesome service that must be some effort!

Um, Twitter was also archived by the Library of Congress just a while back, not sure if they are adding to the archive or if what they got is all the archive is going to be. Still, I wouldn't want to contribute to anything that is going to be kept more or less forever by the U.S. Government.

SUP. If you haven't caught wind of it yet, I decided to take control of the shmups twitter wholeheartedly. I had actually planned this in December, but managed to get szycag and Uzu working on it since August of last year. Evidently though, there is simply not enough news at this point to warrant four different people contributing towards it... and at some stage I realized that I was the only person covering shmup news exclusively (even Japanese sites have anonymous contributors or they're journalists that cover a variety of things), so I thought I might as well just do it myself. I mean, it's my account. I commissioned some art from woof/woofycakes to mark the change.

Nothing's changed really though, the shmups twitter is still the shmups twitter except tweets aren't signed with initials and I've been playing around ensuring tweets usually have embedded content, it's just more visually informative and more likely to get people interested. That's at the liberty of how the site cooperates with embeds though. I thought the business email thing would be too smug but it's working and I've had people approach me wanting to give exposure to their game, which is nice. Ultimately though, the shmup genre is living off what the industry does with it rather than what I can do with it through exposure, and I'm at the liberty of this. If there's no news, there isn't a lot to talk about and I'm not going to go out of my way to carry the genre any further than I already have.

This is also a reminder that the shmups twitter is a thing that exists, so go follow if you haven't already. Not much else to say other than I'll just keep at it.

>All this shit on twitter

I don't give a fuck about the social aspect of it, but Twitter is a fucking godsend for an amateur game dev like me. Tons of artists and musicians regularly update their stuff on twitter, as well as their commission and work availability status, making it a fucking great place to find and recruit work when combined with the networking aspect of the site.

Similarly, lots of game devs use it for little day to day game dev diaries, which makes it excellent both to track upcoming projects, keep an eye on developers, network and make friends in the game dev scene, and also chronicle my own efforts in hopes of racking up more players eventually.

So yeah, I made a Patreon - http://patreon.com/shmups

So if you've liked the content, time, and effort put into the shmups twitter over the years - and wish to support - it's now possible.

It's not about money, it's about knowing that there's a real audience that cares about the time and effort put in. So with recently having surgery and being bedridden for basically the entirety of February (still waiting on an ultrasound), it has actually made me realize that I'm not going to be doing shmup news forever, it's made me realize that I'm now the only person doing this and I feel like the outlet is worth something, or else my time and effort could be better spent doing something different.

It's $1+, pay what you want. No paywalls because I don't believe in that sort of thing.

I'm going to let the audience decide. If everything checks out, I should be back to form sometime in March.
