First home port with TATE?
I talked with some friends a few weeks ago about which home port was the first to feature TATE, but we didn't come to any real conclusion. I would guess it's either a Saturn/PSX game or perhaps something for the pc-engine?
Re: First home port with TATE?
Raiden Project (PS1) was the first, I've read.

That's the one I've generally heard credited as being first.Bill wrote:Raiden Project (PS1) was the first, I've read.
Re: First home port with TATE?
There exists a TATE version of Pac-Man for the C64. I believe the game is called Side Pac-Man.
I don't know the year but I'd say this was the first TATE homeport.

Re: First home port with TATE?
I remember TATEing my "gaming TV" (black and white CRT) back in 1986 to play my "Tennis" (console with only dial games) like I'd played Arkanoid in the arcades. I guess this wasn't intended use, so never mind.antares wrote:There exists a TATE version of Pac-Man for the C64. I believe the game is called Side Pac-Man.

Dragon Spirit on the X68000 has a Tate mode. It was released in 1988.

Re: First home port with TATE?
Dragon Spirit being the first shmup port to feature Tate then?
That sounds really intresting, are you sure about the title though? A quick search came up with nothing, neither on google or lemon64.antares wrote:There exists a TATE version of Pac-Man for the C64. I believe the game is called Side Pac-Man.

Re: First home port with TATE?
I tated Alex Kidd on Master System back in the day so I could play it while lying down.

Re: First home port with TATE?
Not to sure about the title, I just did a quick search for myself and couldn't find anything.Dragoforce wrote: That sounds really intresting, are you sure about the title though? A quick search came up with nothing, neither on google or lemon64.
I have the game stored somewhere in my cellar. I can go looking for it in the next few days.

I recall someone saying here that there is one PCE title that has a tate option, but I can't recall the title mentioned or whether it was a shmup.

Re: First home port with TATE?
I remember a shmup coming free on a cover cassette with Zzap64 magazine that needed you to tate your TV. I can not remember the game or the issue but it would have been around 89/90

I'd say Scramble for the Vectrex, but wouldn't that be cheating?

Epic bump, but did you find the game Antares?
Re: First home port with TATE?
Sorry, missed this previously; that'd be Shaun Pearson's Shot Away i expect. Antares was talking about this by the way. =-)mr_m0nks wrote:I remember a shmup coming free on a cover cassette with Zzap64 magazine that needed you to tate your TV. Re: First home port with TATE?
So we had PacMan on C64 in 1983, and then Dragon Spirit on X68000 in 1988
...anything in between?
And what of the mention of a PC-Engine game with tate mode? Is this actually true?
I have almost every PC-Engine shmup to think of, and don't know of any tate mode.

I'd forgotton about those! Gauntlet was also tate on the Lynx, I always found it far too unconfortable to play though holding it vertically.grobda wrote:raiden and klax on the atari lynx were 'tate'

Re: First home port with TATE?
Nah, I'm pretty sure there's no such thing as a shmup with tate for the PCE.Koa Zo wrote:So we had PacMan on C64 in 1983, and then Dragon Spirit on X68000 in 1988

Re: First home port with TATE?
Both PC Engine/TG-16 shmups of Cyber Core and Soldier Blade allowed normal screen setup and the narrower "arcade" screen but still presented in "verizontal" mode.
Only if Hudson Soft & Compile had the foresight to include tate option with PCE SB, it would've been perfect. Still is regarded as a classic shmup title without this tate option.

I wouldn't mind a tate-cyber core either, I quite like that game, even if it's piss-easy.PC Engine Fan X! wrote:Both PC Engine/TG-16 shmups of Cyber Core and Soldier Blade allowed normal screen setup and the narrower "arcade" screen but still presented in "verizontal" mode.
