Yes - it does what you think it might.

I'd wanted to keep the forum ad/donation free but this is my sixth consecutive year at work without a pay rise, and at this point I wouldn't say no if anyone feels like being generous. To date I have spent a little over £2,500 over the last two and a bit years hosting this place, so any small amount will be appreciated.

No this does not mean there's any potential upcoming hosting issues, and no there's absolutely no danger of ads, even google ones.

I tried to keep it as unobtrusive as possible, I killed off the remote linking of the image and hosted it locally instead to keep the speed up too.

So, there you go!

I'll take this off the announcements in a week or two, looking a bit cluttered right now.

Oh, I was scared that I'd gotten a virus or something first. I will defintly donate some money once I get my pay this month. This a great site and I can't thank you enough for maintaining it.

I'll donate some Friday when I get paid.

Thanks again for the huge personal investment you've already made in the forum.

Exactly my sentiments. I'll donate what I can in a few days...

If all the regulars donated a small amount we could completely reimburse our generous benefactor!

Yup, loads of kudos to BF for managing to spend all that time an money keeping this place up and running so far. Should have probably done it before this, but now is a good time as any! I hope people understand the effort required and don't mind supporting.

cheers malc

I doubt you could've selected a more prominent spot than this :D

Have you considered to just sneak affiliate links into the forum? By just using Play-Asia and Amazon I bet this would easily cover the costs, and the profit could then be given back to forum members in form of prizes :D It's just a few extra characters in links and could be generated automatically by the forum software.

That might be the problem with affiliation. Affiliate links go against the spirit of this forum, I personally think, and an open, optional donate button is a lot fairer. This forum is the hub for my main hobby/enthusiasm, an incredible resource, and a social tool that I use to make and meet numerous friends in real life. I'd far rather donate direct than spend money at PA to return the favour.

For others it's an occasional place to stop and lurk, and they can choose not to pay, or pay very little.

Affiliate links just bring a third party into the relationship shared between forum and user.

Indeed - we prohibit sellers from using affiliate links so we can hardly go using them ourselves.

I'd also like to say a big thanks to the people who have donated so far :)

I keep trying to log in to Paypal to donate, but it says "please enter an amount greater than zero" even when I put a number in the donate box. Grr.

Put in your amount then press the "Update total". I had to try a few times but eventually it worked.

Mine was pretty small too, but even if every active user donated $1 it would go along way to helping BF's costs here.

Thanks again to bloodflowers for your service and sacrifice all this time, I hope to donate again in the future when I am able. Now go buy yerself some nice girlie statues :P

I think if all our regulars committed to that, we could get.... $80? Which wouldn't be too bad if it was a monthly thing, I suppose...

I think everyone could afford to give $5. That's like, what, one pint at the pub?
