Which PS1 & PS2 shmups have a tate option?

Post by ASK »

So which shmups on the PS1 & PS2 can be set to tate? I'd like to get a list going for this, so I'll try to keep this updated.
ALL GAMES NTSC-J UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE

PS1

Arcade Gears: Image Fight & X-Multiply (screen cannot display full play area, in both games...)
Capcom Generation 1 (1942, 1943 & 1943 Kai)

Capcom Generation 4 (Gun.Smoke)
Donpachi
DoDonPachi
Namco Museums Vols.1-5 and Encore (Galaga, Galaxian, Gaplus, Xevious, Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber)
Raiden DX
Raiden Project (US version has tate, but requires Gameshark for rotated controls)
Sonic Wings Special (technically not a port but an original game, has full tate regardless)
Strikers 1945
Strikers 1945 II (US version = no tate and misleadingly renamed "Strikers 1945")
Toaplan Shooting Battle Vol.1 (Tiger Heli, KK Tiger & Twin Cobra)
Xevious 3D+G (Xevious, Super Xevious & Xevious Arrangement)

PS2

DDP: DOJ
Double Shienryu (Shienryu)
Espgaluda

Ibara
Mushihimesama
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol.1 (Strikers 1945 I & II)
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol.2 (Sengoku Ace)

The only NTSCJ PS1 vert ports I know of without tate are Gunbird, Shienryu and Twinbee Deluxe Pack. The former two's Saturn ports have tate, but SS TBDP is also tate-less (this only affects Detana Twinbee, since Yahho is native yoko). Otherwise, all of the following have tate in NTSCJ. Not sure about all US localisations, and totally clueless about any PAL ones.

Arcade Gears: Image Fight & X-Multiply (screen cannot display full play area, in both games...)
Capcom Generation 1 (1942, 1943 & 1943 Kai)
Capcom Generation 3 (Vulgus & Exed Exes)
Capcom Generation 4 (Gun.Smoke)
Donpachi
DoDonPachi
Namco Museums Vols.1-5 and Encore (Galaga, Galaxian, Gaplus, Xevious, Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber)
Raiden DX
Raiden Project (US version has tate, but requires Gameshark for rotated controls)
Sonic Wings Special (technically not a port but an original game, has full tate regardless)
Strikers 1945
Strikers 1945 II (US version = no tate and misleadingly renamed "Strikers 1945")
Toaplan Shooting Battle Vol.1 (Tiger Heli, KK Tiger & Twin Cobra)
Xevious 3D+G (Xevious, Super Xevious & Xevious Arrangement)

For NTSCJ PS2: Giga Wing Generations lacks tate. Also, both of the Taito Memories discs (Joukan and Gekan) lack it. Otherwise, all of the below NTSCJ releases include it. Again, I'm not too knowledgeable on any US / PAL localisations of these.

Double Shienryu (Shienryu)
Homura
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol.1 (Strikers 1945 I & II)
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol.2 (Sengoku Ace)
Psikyo Shooting Collection Vol.3 (Dragon Blaze)
Psyvariar Complete Edition (contains both of the games immediately below)
Psyvariar: Medium Unit
Psyvariar Revision
Psyvariar 2: Ultimate Final
Radirgy Precious
Raiden III
Shikigami no Shiro
Shikigami no Shiro II (US version has TATE)
Sonic Wings
Taito Memories II Joukan and Gekan (Rayforce, Fighting Hawk, Scramble Formation / Tokio)
Trigger Heart Exelica Enhanced
Trizeal
XII Stag

Taito Legends 2 PAL supports 60 Hz, but lacks tate mode for verticals. Which, coupled with the obligatory interlacing and "deflickering", makes for crying shame. Oh, and no RayForce in the PS2 version. If StarForce (cool name, eh), I mean the copy protection, is acceptable for you, go for the PC version (I doubt it can be any worse than the PS2 one).
P.S. To be fair, though, the PS2 version's got its share of exclusives:

Also, Radirgy PreciouS (Japan only) can be tated.

A few more to add to the list are from the Oretachi Geasen Zoku Sono series.
Vol.01 Scramble
Vol.04 Time Pilot
Vol.05 Moon Cresta
Vol.06 Sonic Wings
Vol.10 Terra Cresta

I believe these are the only home versions of Scramble, Time Pilot, and Terra Cresta that can be played in the original arcade orientation.

Its also worth noting (while your tv is on its side) that Vol.03 Karatedo, Vol.11 Quarth, Vol.16 Contra, and Vol.17 Pooyan all offer tate display options. (and I think Vol.07 Burger Time does too)

Even the JPN PS2 import of Success' Psyvariar Capture Box set with DVD of both superplays of Psyvariar Medium Unit & Psyvariar Revision can be viewed in tate. It's officially released under the DVD title of ″Psyvariar Appericate DVD Vol. 1″ from Reverse Babel Label division of Success Corp.

It's too bad that the current crop of superplays released nowdays don't include tate viewing option even if said PCB title is a tate game to begin with. It shouldn't be too hard to implement tate option on superplay DVDs, especially if the publisher uses the dual-layer DVD format.

Those are on the PS2. Come to think of it, there were a handful of similar "classic" releases on the PS1 as well (Moon Cresta comes most immediately to mind), though I'm not sure what the situation is with tate on any of those.
