Zed Blade/Operation Ragnarok (New 31/12/09)

Post by spadgy »

ARE YOU READY FOR THE BATTLES?

Image

This is the thread for NMK's fantastic horizontal shooter Zed Blade, known as Operation Ragnarok or Sakusen Na Ragnarok in Japan. Thanks to Raiden Fighters 2 for the the previous thread.

SUBMIT LIKE THIS PLEASE:

NAME - SCORE - LEVEL - CHARACTER - WEAPON COMBO - FORMAT - FAST AUTOFIRE?

NAME - Your forum name!
SCORE - Your Score!
LEVEL - Game does not loop, so just Lv1, Lv2, Lv3 etc. Or ALL!
CHARACTER - Uncle Beard, Ms Charlotte or Swift Arnold (They appear in that order on the character/weapon select screen). Beard has a beard, and Charlotte is the only female. Beard is the slowest, Swift is the fastest.
WEAPON COMBO - As you'll see when you play, you get to choose Shot, Missile and Rear weapons at the start. Please just note which you use like this Shot/Missile/Rear. The available weapons are as follows:
Shot: 3-Way // Wave // Vertical
Missile: Homing // A-S // A-A
Rear: 2-Way // Wave// Twin
FORMAT - PCB or MAME!
FAST AUTOFIRE - Faster autofire than default used (through MAME or a stick)? YES or NO.

There are three boards: The main high score board for both autofire-on and autofire-off scores, and two separate boards for autofire-on and autofire-off scores. You submitted score will go to both relevant boards auotmatically.

Finally, Skykid has a superb Strategy Guide underway for this game. Use it. Contribute to it. Thanks Skykid.

Cheers spadgy.
We won't be able to compete with RF2's autofire score though, as we don't have autofire in the arcade. Nevertheless we can practice the scoring method in the meantime.

Good point DEL - is this, Like Darius Gaiden, a game where autofire makes a really big difference to scoring? I guess it makes sense, as there are few scoring mechanics beyond destroying as much as you can. If so, what do people think about two separate boards, or just an autofire column like this?

I guess you could have a non-autofire ranking too. There's no harm in that. I tried the game out 2 nights ago with CHI and got 2.5mil without autofire as an opener. There's a lot more to come tho

Still - best to submit that score eh DEL? More scores on the board is a good thing, as is knocking Skykid down a bit!

And CHI - what have you got?!

Thanks for the extra info Raiden Fighters 2, and the un-Google translation DEL.

Updated!

EDIT: I've tidied up the first post, and added in lists of weapon descriptions.

Time to get back to Casino Skykid!

A submission from me and one from my wife!:

spadgy - 1,510,600 - 1-5 - Uncle Beard - Wave/Homing/Wave - PCB - NO

KJF - 491,680 - 1-3 - Uncle Beard - 3-Way/Homing/Wave - PCB - NO

Updating now!

EDIT: I've changed the 'Autofire Used?' field to 'MAME's Fast Autofire Used?' because effectively the PCB does have autofire - it's just very slow on many weapons. It's reasonable when using Wave as your front shot, but only once you've powered-up, and you can still speed it up a vast amount with some quick-fingered tapping. I haven't actually tried the Vertical front shot enough to know exactly how the on-PCB autofire is, but I'm certain it's slow. I'll check soon.

Correct me if I'm wrong with any of that - I haven't played this on MAME yet, and on my crap Mac MAME I can't even work out autofire customisation.

I believe I have the cart at home, can't remeber anything from the game except a Eurotechno sounding soundtrack. What is this autofire scoring method you speak of?

I know how you feel. I spent a brief spell experimenting with different weapons last night and my wrist feels like it's going to explode!

So - I've added your score CHI. Good work mate!

DEL - I see yours on the board in CHI's photo - shall I submit it?

Raiden Fighters 2 - I've changed yours to PCB instead of MAME. But did you use autofire? Was that with an arcade stick?

I have a slightly higher one too, but only a tiny bit, and I don't have it with me. More to come!

UPDATERISED!

Skykid - 1,705,300 - 1-5 Uncle Beard - 3 way/homing/2 way

Mame (on the arcade cabinet) - no autofire

And I can do better than that, I'm sure of it.

The game doesn't loop. Uncle Beard Wave/A S/Wave seems like it's the best for scoring (coincidentally what Raiden Fighters 2 is using). A little over 8.1M is the highest known score (7.3M without auto).

To score really high on this game feels like you're doing esprade boss milking. The only difference is you're doing it the entire game.

So you'll have a score from us soon the freddiebamboo? :)

And thanks sikraiken - I'll amend the opening post accordingly.

Finally - well done Skykid, but sorry mate - I got this last night:

spadgy - 1,941,550 - 6 - Uncle Beard - Wave/Homing/Wave - PCB - No

Here's the pic. Mine is the top score (on my very naughty 30-in-1 MVS cart that contains the game. I'm after a real copy by the way). However, as you can see, I really have problems on this cart entering the score! All of those score's are mine, but I keep accidently registering a button press while scrolling through the letters. I think my stick button is just super sensitive, and this game has no delete! Perhaps I'm still wildly whacking the shot button! I've failed three out of five times here. And trust me, the only other person using this cart is my wife, and I'd be far too scared to claim a score that was hers!

freddiebamboo - 2,334,900 - 7 - Uncle Beard - 3Way/Homing/Wave - MAME - [Auto 1]

So many lives lost with full bomb stocks on this, but made good progress in stage 7 which was nice.

Need to milk more, but I'm more interested in getting the latter stages sorted into a vaguely sensible route.

Do you guys know how many point based extends there are in this? Is it just two? I could use the info to update the guide.

Yeah - there's defiatenly three, but I've no clue when the third kicks in.

There's one at 200k, one at 800k, the third is somewhere around the 2m stage.

I know because I got this last night at the Arcade!

spadgy - 2,423,300 - 7 - Uncle Beard - Wave/Homing/Wave - PCB - No

Bomb spammed to get that level six boss down on the first time I met him. Level 7's difficulty spike is madness, but I survived for a good while with next to no bombs.

Only a very blurry photo, as CHI has completely filled the board at Casino, so you only have the 'Continue?' countdown to whip out your phone and take a pic!

Updated! Some minor fixes and formating tidied (Such as details on the 'Level' field).

Sorry CHI - previously I'd failed to get your score in even though I'm convinced I had done so. I probably failed to hit 'Submit' as I was doing it on the sneak at work.

Anyway - it's all done now.

And CHI - I need to learn your milking tricks. I thought I knew a few, but you're score is way above mine and a level behind!

Er, mine's wrong too buddy. I didn't use Ms Charlotte, nor did I use autofire. I did use Mame though. It's all in the original post. :D

I'm getting pissed now. I can hit nearly 1.7 million by the end of stage 4, but the milking and rubbish use of bombs means I keep dying.
Also, the mame running through my arcade cab is definitely sped up compared to the original hardware - uncle beard and the bullets are coming at me pretty fast! Really need to get myself a cart of this before I can play properly and make light work of Spadgy's score.

 Fixed your character, so it says Uncle Beard. However, however much I look it seems I've got the details right for MAME and Autofire. Am I missing something?

It sounds like your problems come from you MAME issues, as I can't think of much advice to offer. Be bomb happy! I can sometimes get to the very start of stage 5 without loosing a life now (I've done it about three times), but I'm not sure when I'm hitting what scores. I'll make a note next play through. Perhaps you need to focus a little less on the milking?

You can easily better my score mate. I'm after a proper cart too, but if one appears in forum-land I won't get in the way with you taking it. I can wait, as my multi-cart seems to be doing the job.

Yeah Multi carts are nice as they're roms on proper hardware as opposed to emulation. I reckon if I get good at my 'fast' version I'll have a comfotable time if I lay my hands on a proper cart.
