Julian Rignall returning to gaming media to helm WoW mag
Probably old news to those who follow World of Warcraft, but for those of us who don't play that game and just remember Julian 'Jaz' Rignall from the 80s/90s, it's kinda interesting to see... After several decades of retirement from gaming mags, former ZZAP64/CVG/etc editor Julian Rignall returns helm a new print magazine...

Most recent (?) Q&A with Julian Rignall:

Some will remember Rignall was one of the most hardcore shmup fans in 80s/90s gaming media.

Yes I remember him. He won a shoot'em up contest in London before I was old enough to get in the arcades. His prize was a Tempest machine as far as I remember.
As far as his interview goes, he is asked whether he likes WoW and he replies:
I do understand that he has to say he likes WoW, as he's helming the mag.
BUT
The general consensus amongst the London arcade goers is that World of Warcraft is a disease
A game that cannot be completed.

And yes, I am a huge, huge Warcraft fan. I spend a ridiculous amount of my time in the game, raiding several times a week and doing a lot of PVP. It's a truly magnificent game, and being able to make a magazine about it is really cool.

Couldn't the same thing be said about Raiden and a whole lot of other endless-looping games?DEL wrote: A game that cannot be completed.

I agree that WoW is crime against humanity though.

Never got the WoW hater (or the WoW GOT TO GIVE UP EVERYTHING TO PLAY! folks either)
WoW is fun *gasp* i know, i was stunned too - i'd struggled on with other MMORPGs and just couldn't get into them. WoW actually felt like fun whilst the others felt like work.

Its a bit like saying "One more drink won't hurt". For an obsessive compulsive person like many video gamers, one more WoW session could get you addicted and the next thing you know you're looking at your stats and find that you've spent 100 whole days on WoW in the last year. Not hours, days!
Television documentaries on how video games can be bad for you. WoW is a Poster child for such documentaries.
^Now that I check my fading memory, you're right - Tempest was the new game that was competed on, with the wise rationale that a completely new game to everyone in the Comp would level the playing field.Wasn't it Galaga? Didn't check the link yet, does he still have a mullet and say everything is a 'shambling travesty'. Don't suppose he has the right to say that in this context.

Actually not. WoW can eat up years of your young life. An endless looping game like Raiden or Truxton will only eat up 5 to 12 hours of your life and then you'll probably never play it again.Couldn't the same thing be said about Raiden and a whole lot of other endless-looping games?

Maybe you can understand a WoW hater a bit better if you see how it tarnishes video games players as a whole.Never got the WoW hater (or the WoW GOT TO GIVE UP EVERYTHING TO PLAY! folks either)

yup - i've seen it happen to many people, but i've seen many people dip in to WoW and treat it like any other game. I've been playing for about 2 years, but i dip in when i fancy a bit of an explore - only around level 46 and don't feel the burning rage to play it every day. Not got divorced , quit my job or anything in order to continue playing ... yetY'know wot, you're probably very right that WoW is fun, BUT it is fun fraught with Danger!

I agree though that if you are particularly prone to addiction then WoW is like pure heroin.
again though, that's individuals ruining it for the rest of us.Maybe you can understand a WoW hater a bit better if you see how it tarnishes video games players as a whole.

It's more like rats pulling levers to get food pellets. That's all life is, really. Pull a lever. Maybe get a food pellet.
It's an odd time to start a magazine on this particular game, since it's peaked already and is starting the very slow decline for the following centuries. Everquest is still pumping out expansions a decade later, imagine how long it'll take this beast to slide into obscurity.
Maybe not so odd a time after all. : /

PSX Vita: Slightly more popular than Color TV-Game system. Almost as successful as the Wii U.
Re: Julian Rignall returning to gaming media to helm WoW mag
I played WoW for about six months at launch and enjoyed it, but reached a point where I suddenly lost interest and aside from a brief return, pretty much gave it up at that point. My highest character was a level 53.
Re: Julian Rignall returning to gaming media to helm WoW mag
I steer well clear of MMORPG's in case I get addicted to what they're calling video game crack, and flush what little time I have left to do anything productive down the pan.

Re: Julian Rignall returning to gaming media to helm WoW mag
Thread's totally derailed, but I played WoW for a year a little before and during college to the point where I was raiding a couple times a week, staying up 'til 4am and generally being too tired to pay attention in class. Something just clicked at some point and I gave it up cold turkey, going from doing 12hr stints on a Saturday to nothing. Wasn't without doing some damage first though as I lost a girlfriend over it. Sold my account for something like $400-600 which at least covered the game + subscription fees I'd paid, and moved on with my life. There was at least one person in my college program who actually dropped out due to WoW
Warcrack is correct.

Maybe get spanked by a DM (or whatever they call them) or have your tail stolen by another rat.BryanM wrote:It's more like rats pulling levers to get food pellets. That's all life is, really. Pull a lever. Maybe get a food pellet.
I played a bit of Star Wars Galaxies at various times (I tried to get into one of the emulation servers recently) but I could never get too into it. It's just not engrossing enough. Too much repetition and grinding. Sure, there's some economics issues (lol, the economics discussions on Galaxies were hilarious) but the gameplay can't suck.
My brother was a WoW player for a while but even he said that the first thing Dragon Age's gameplay reminded him of was WoW (not a good thing).

I remember him from CVG. I still have that VHS tape him and Gary Harrod made of Street Fighter 2 when it was relesed for SNES.
