I wonder when Cave will start taking pre-orders at their store? Amazon is already taking pre-orders for the limited edition.

If you're making a comprehensive list, don't forget such gems as Galaga and Xevious on XBLA. If you're just listing must haves, you can leave off Mamoru-kun, Shiki III and Otomedius G.

So mamru-kun is not a good game? I was about to order the limited edition.

Mamoru-kun is ... different. While I wouldn't call it a must-get game, it's not Otomedius bad. Find some videos if you're curious about it.

Well I'd have to pay around 80 dollars for the limited edition, that's not included shipping. Think it's worth it for that price?

I really really like Raiden Fighters Aces and Shooting Love. SL is awesome with the 2/4 modes.

I already got Raiden Fighter Aces (jap version), I am about to get Shooting Love after seeing some youtube gameplay. At first I wasn't even interested because I hated Chaos Field on Game Cube and I thought it was from the same developper, which turned out to not be the case. I was surprised.

I think Amazon sold out within hours of it going up, at least initially. Cave store - no idea when it will go up. Some stores did a brief preorder run earlier - i manage to snag a preord, but i hear some did a second batch at the end of last week.

It actually sounds like the face plate limited might actually be .... limited! certainly more so that the previous LEs at least.

That explains why the plants on stage 2 go down with one hit then.

Thought that was a bit odd in the conversion.

Yeah. The battleship boss seems to soak up loads of fully-charged beam blasts before going down, too (but only a couple of laser shots of any kind, which leads me to suspect the vulnerable part of the core might be a bit higher or lower than usual). Also, the enemies that walk along a bit and then become stationary in R-Type II's second level fire bullets your Force can't block.

These are all trifles, though, and I actually prefer that last one. It's still an essential game, Lawfer! :D

Don't forget Galaga Legions on XBLA. A bit off beat but a hidden gem IMHO.

Damn gotta pre-order now just in case.

Edit: Damn you where right, it's been already sold out everywhere...

OP, you missed Senko no Ronde (also available in the US/EU).

My personal breakdown of the retail releases (pretty much in order of my liking):

Top tier, must have stuff:
*Espgaluda II (assuming port quality is equal to Futari, a sequel to my favorite game in the genre is pretty much a no-brainer for me)
*Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5
*Death Smiles

Very good:
*Raiden Fighters Aces
*Raiden IV
*Do Don Pachi Daioujou Black Label Extra (the bugs are exaggerated by many, unless you're a very skilled player going for score you likely won't notice any gameplay bugs, and the sloppy menu navigation oddities are far from a game killer. However, if you own the PS2 Daioujou port YMMV depending on how much you want to play the Black Label or X modes.)
*Shikigami no Shiro III (kinda ugly, but it plays pretty well)

Hit-or-miss:
*Mamoru-kun ha norowareteshimatta! (I actually like it quite a bit, but the style is not for everyone)
*Otomedius G (it's not THAT bad if you're OK with the Konami/Gradius system, I got into it for a while)
*Senko no Ronde (like Mamoro-kun, it's so different that it's not for everyone. I got bored with it pretty quickly)
*Shooting Love 200X (Just couldn't get into Exzeal or the Shooting Training mode, and this comes from someone who really enjoyed Trizeal when I first played it on DC)

I didn't miss it, it's just not a shmup but a fighting game.

What I missed was Crescendo Symphony.

I looked at a video of it on youtube, looks good enough even fun?

Mamoru-kun is okay if you just want to blast stuff for a while. The Limited Edition comes with a super-play DVD which is a guy standing in one spot for ten minutes (an actual ten minutes) milking, so I imagine it's not something people will want to play for score (though this doesn't happen in the other 2 plays). But Otomedius G is Roll Tier.

Looked at the video of it and it's pretty lame, it makes the Monkey King on Wii look like a frantic shooting game.

neojma wrote:*Shikigami no Shiro III (kinda ugly, but it plays pretty well)
Just checked a video of it on youtube and it's alright, I also tried the PC demo years ago didn't like it too much. All in all I wouldn't mind buying the Japanese version for 19.99 bucks, but at the price it is being sold for I might as well save my money to buy some Cave games.

There's a quality port of Shiki III for the Wii too, which I was able to find new for $15 in a US Gamestop.

I just watched a vid of Otomedius and almost died of embarrassment. Shockingly primitive shooting (SPS)!

I concur.

Anyway, there's also a number of other games to consider. It seems the purpose of the thread wasn't to list all of the shmup games available, but there's a lot of others to consider, whether some people would consider them "shmups" or whether they are to be considered "good" is up in the air I guess, but there are others out there, including:

Aegis Wing (used to be free..)
Space Invaders Extreme (4 player mode is sweet)
Geometry Wars 1&2 (closed arena shooting, but shooting no less.)
Senko no Ronde (otherwise known as the Secret of Rondell Sheridan, fighting-shmup hybrid)
Space Giraffe and Tempest (Jeff Minter may or may not be shmup material)
Gyruss (Konami classic "tube" shooter)
Scramble (Probably the first horizontal shmup ever)
Time Pilot (weird and goes in all directions, but shooting with ships is included)
1942: Dual Strike (an awesome port of 1942 with updates and co-op)
Galaga and Galaga Legions (a bonafide classic and an interesting pattern-centric update version)
Every Extend Extra Extreme "E4" (Every Extend isn't just about killing yourself anymore, there's a shooting mode now)
Platypus (now on indie games, Xbox Live)

Raystorm HD (coming to Live Arcade early 2010)
Day Zero: Attack on Earth (or whatever)

Actually it is, this why I listed Crescendo Symphony even though it's crap. Anyway thanks much for the list, I updated it.

I didn't list those on purpose because I don't consider them to be shmups. There is some shooting going on, but that's just about all.
