Fallout 3 - Worth Getting?

Post by junkeR »

Hello,

I performed a search on Fallout 3 and did not find a specific topic on it. Please lock and point me to the thread if there is indeed one.

On topic, is this game worth getting? I did some searching on it and I'm disappointed a demo won't be released for it as they said they weren't able to separate a piece of the game off for a demo. The game looks/sounds interesting, but I am wondering what your takes are on it? I have never played Morrowind/Oblivion/or the other Fallout games before.

Also, I were to purchase this game, it would be for my PS3 as that is the only thing I own capable of playing it. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

YES!

I just picked up the game of the year edition finally. Such an open world and a lot of exploring if you're up to it. When the game first came out I put 50 hours in without even doing a story mission. Good game if you're looking for a single player experience. You should have jumped on the Black Friday deals for this. Check Target.com, they were selling it for $39.99.

I do warn you though, the GOTY edition on PS3 is glitchy and requires resetting the game every few hors and other very minor gameplay problems. If you don't care about playing the expansion packs just get the regular edition, always worked very well for me.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, I say get it. Never played Fallout series and never put much time into Oblivion. Put in many hours on it, never got the DLC content for it though.

i'd say at the very least get the point lookout dlc. adds quite a few hours of playtime and a large new chunk of land to explore.

to the OP- it's one of the best games i've played this generation. if you can get into the desolate atmosphere of the game you'll be hooked.

I just got it a week ago and think it is fantastic! I did NOT get the GOTY edition because I had heard it was buggier, but depending on how things go, I may upgrade to that edition at some point. This and Oblivion (don't know if you need both...maybe?) represent two of the BIG world exploration RPGs for the current generation, and show the sort of thing these consoles can do beyond FPS titles (yeah, don't confuse Fallout 3 with an FPS!) If you are looking for something really REALLY expansive, this is a good title to pick up (vanilla version is pretty cheap these days), and the post apocalyptic aspect is a perk (at least for me anyway.)

Regarding the PS3 version...does downloading the expansions resolve the bugginess of the GOTY edition, or ???

Needing to reset the game every couple hours is not a minor issue. Bioware has been making this kind of games for years and yet there are more bugs in them than in a hobo mattress. They should consider debugging their games instead of release and then fix, but I guess that's not possible since EA has been sacking people left and right, quality assurance be damned. There's no need to hire extra developers and testers when the customer will do the job for them. Fuck EA and I'll save my money for games that don't blow up in my face just because I forgot to randomly reset my system.

Game is really good, I recommend it! I played it on PC, but in this case platform shouldn't make much of a difference. It's much more of a first-person RPG than a shooter. In my experience, using the attack-queuing VATS system is pretty much a necessity for combat, as regular shooting is inaccurate and often cumbersome. The atmosphere, quests and storyline are pretty neat if you like the post-apocalyptic mad-max sci-fi style of the game.

Yeah its worth buying, just get the GOTY edition version though. I missed out on the DLC, very good game. At the start your really weak + weapon maintenance is annoying until you get the good stuff later on. Its solid with some fantastic moments and crazy dialogue. 10/10.

I didn't like it, but I've never played a western RPG I liked. Plus, I didn't give it much of a chance. Aesthetically it was pretty far from my taste, so I dropped it the moment I got bored.

As a Fallout game it's borderline awful but since you haven't played those, definitely check it out. The story is full of holes and the dialogue isn't that great but the pew-pew action is great.

I like the game, great combat system and atmosphere but it's dark on my ancient CRT monitor.

I need a better monitor. In fact, I need a better PC.

It's an awesome game, a must-have in every sense of the word. I haven't spent much time with the original games at all, and my last attempt at a Bethesda game was Morrowind where I grew very frustrated with the uncanny valley of the game world. Fallout 3 I can't praise enough.

I do agree that it is buggy as hell on the PC at least. At the time I was going through it I was also goofing around on the excellent STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl. STALKER has a very impressive engine that also manages to feel like it's been cobbled together with wire and duct tape (figuratively speaking) and gives the impression of being one keypress away from crashing entirely throughout most of the game. Never once crashed on me, though; Fallout on the other hand would occasionally boot me back to the desktop with no warning whatsoever.

The fun part was the bug I got on my first playthrough that prevented me from using fast travel, which I acquired very early on in the game. For some masochistic reason I finished the damn thing, hoofing it from one end of the map to the other and back for every story quest and a good handful of non-essential quests in between.

It depends. Personally, shmups and games from the golden era have cursed me with an very short gaming attention span. When it comes to current gen, I can just about get through Modern Warfare 2 without being too distracted (although I even walked away from that for about a week).

Fallout 3, or anything in a GTA style, however good, would never hold my attention long enough.

I was never a die-hard fanboy, but I think they did a really good job of continuing what made Fallout work.

The main plot arc left me cold but the real meat of the game is everything else. The open world is great fun to explore and there are tons of side quests. It's a bit disappointing that the "story" is such a small part of the game but I recommend getting near the end so that you've got the weapons / armor / allies you want and then going out exploring. If you like it and want more depth, go play the original Fallout games. They've aged well (story and atmosphere are relatively timeless) and even Fallout 3's combat system owes a lot to the original.

I've watched this game being played for hours and hours, it's like Morrowind if the only things to see were the ashlands. Pretty same-y looking stuff. There's lots of good detail but it's a game I haven't regretted passing up on. Sort of like how I don't buy into the hype around BioShock.

I can't agree with that. Yeah if you camp out in the wasteland it's pretty bland but there's plenty of areas that stand out in my mind. Downtown DC, the subway system, Rivet City, various factories, caves, abandoned homes, all the whacky spots from the DLC. I guess not everyone enjoys rummaging through old locations like I do though.

Also, Bioshock is awesome. That is all.

Fallout 3 is a favorite. I wish the Fallout 3 DLC didn't happen, though. Mothership Zeta was a really bad last taste of the game. That was bland. I also wish that I could fire a weapon and hit something and that it wouldn't take multiple missiles to kill a giant scorpion. Other than that it was very special.

Wasteland is one of my favourite games of all time and whilst i didn't mind FO1 and 2 they never caught me the same way as Wasteland did.

Fallout 3 however is exactly what i expected Wasteland to be - the atmosphere is amazing and the music is a brilliant fit so you get that feel of a country on pause (partially! lazer weaponry etc still made it !).

Story poops it's pants a little near the end and it wraps up all too quickly but there are a couple of amazing points along the way.
VATS is great too - nothing better than reducing a bunch of raiders to pools of goo with your trusty lazer rifle.
Sort of like how I don't buy into the hype around BioShock.
gameplay wise Bioshock is merely good (if you don't patch and revive) to great (no patch, no reviving). The setting is beautifully brought to life though and, yeah, "that" twist is a real :O :O :O moment. IMO i think it deserves it, but i think it's the package as a whole that gets it - on game play alone it's merely great rather than -the greatest-. Though Fort Frolic should be played by every single gamer on the planet - such a great level. For Fallout 3, the equivalent "level" is Tranquility Lane.

As Wshmups are to Jshmups, so WRPGs are to JRPGs. So why even bother with WRPGs?

Sounds like someone needs an update. This joke is about two generations old, and meanwhile the JRPG market has moved mainly to handhelds, producing insanely deep games like Knights in the Nightmare, Devil Survivor, and Wild Arms XF. I have nothing against games you can buy at Best Buy, Target, or whatever, but there are simply too many quality JRPGs in the past couple of years for me to make room for mainstream games for gamers who want to be in a movie.

What's wrong with a world that has both WRPGs and JRPGs?

I haven't played a good JRPG in years. Must be why I didn't 'get' it.
