Went to see Megadeth last night.
That was the sickest shit I've ever seen. Arcanium, Suicide Silence, and Machine Head played, too. And shit.
Before I begin: BEST SHOW EVER. Just sayin'.
So we missed Arcanium entirely; no great loss, as neither of us knew them anyway. We came in halfway through Suicide Silence, and they were pretty good. Charismatic, the whole shebang. I couldn't hear anything over the damn bass and drums, though. Machine Head was AWESOME, I was pleasantly surprised, though I couldn't hear a lot of them either until they played Hallowed Be Thy Name for kicks. That was pretty good; made me want to go listen to some Maiden. Didn't.
The instant Machine Head was done, my friend went and got an Endgame shirt. When we got back, we immediately humped our way into the front right and waited for another half hour for Megadeth to get ready and shit. They did. They came out like badasses. They played like badasses. We moshed our way to the middle like badasses. They kept playing like badasses. It was incredible like badasses. A ton of girls came and grinded on me like badasses. Five hundred people crowd surfed their asses out of the pit like badasses. They played some more like badasses. After the first hour, hour and a half, I realized that I'd slid over to the side again, but I was still pretty close and I could see, so I just chilled for the rest of it. Until this one cutie came up from my right and kept tapping me because I wasn't being wild enough. Kept giving me this devilish grin. Good times.
My ears are still ringing like nobody's business. I'm Megadeaf. I'm worn out from moshing my brains out. I put on the same clothes from last night because I could barely get out of bed (blue jeans, black shirt, mangled denim vest, flannel jacket-type thing). That and it's THRASH DAY. Well, THRASH DAY #2. THRASH DAY was last night.
Who should I go see next. I missed Metallica this year, and that was shitty, and I missed Disturbed and Tool, and that was shitty too. Definitely want to see Megadeth again.

Re: Went to see Megadeth last night.
I saw Megadeth in Detroit in '97, and my experience differed greatly. We actually left the show a bit early...
That being said, one of the main reasons I bought tickets was because the Misfits were opening, so maybe I was in the wrong frame of mind.

Megadeth are truly amazing live, saw them over here in Belfast back in feburary, Testament and Judas Preist were there as well. What a show! However the crowd didn't give them the praise they deserved.

My buddy has been going off about this show for a while. I don't go to metal shows much (I'm a industrial fan, close though) but I plan to see Municipal Waste soon. Theyre too much fun to miss, especially when they play small venues.
Re: Went to see Megadeth last night.
Weird - I saw Megadeth back in '97 and they were AWESOME. Glad I got to see them shortly before Nick Menza left the band. Wish I could see them on this tour....gabe wrote:I saw Megadeth in Detroit in '97, and my experience differed greatly. We actually left the show a bit early...

Machine Head isn't half bad either.
Saw them playing a few years ago.
I'm not into metal anymore, though.
Grindcore all the way, fuckers

At the risk of being an old ninny, get yourself some nice earplugs. Go have an audiologist custom make ones like the performers wear if you must. It's worth every single penny.m3tall1ca wrote: My ears are still ringing like nobody's business. I'm Megadeaf.
Otherwise you can keep going to crazy shows and your ears won't ever stop ringing. Trust me on this.

Re: Went to see Megadeth last night.
I might go see them in February, but only because they're touring with Slayer. Megadeth haven't released a damn thing worth listening to since maybe Rust in Peace, and even though their old material is wicked, Dave Mustaine has become such a moron that his ugly mug might impede my enjoyment of his playing otherwise excellent material. But yeah, Slayer ain't so hot any more either, but they're still better than the garbage that Mustaine has descended into. I still get hype when Slayer releases new shit, and their latest is pretty bangin'.
Anyway, s'cool you enjoyed the show. Never seen girls grinding on dudes at metal shows (sounds like a fantastic time actually), but I guess that shit's kinda hard with death and black metal bands. Can't say I really like Machine Head--as my personal opinion is that they blow chunks--but at least they played one halfway decent song. I heard their cover of Hallowed be Thy Name on some godawful maiden tribute cd and aside from the lousy vocalist and boring guitar tone it wasn't half bad and was one of the better ones on the album. If you haven't already done so, make sure you see Maiden live, they'll tear your brains out. Seen 'em twice, had my fucking mind blown twice, would do it again. It's a shame they tour so infrequently.

QFT, earplugs FTW! I NEVER go to a show w/o them, and if I happen to forget them before I go in, I try to find a bathroom & at least fill my ears up w/ some toilet paper or something. My hearing is much too precious to lose over a concertbrentsg wrote:At the risk of being an old ninny, get yourself some nice earplugs. Funny story. My ears actually have always been ringers. They never stop ringing as it is. Ever. I have a hard time sleeping because of it. I usually end up only going to sleep when I'm tired enough to pass out, which doesn't exactly have the best results the next day :P Anyhows, yeah, definitely getting earplugs for the next show. Toilet paper, probably not ^^FRO wrote:QFT, earplugs FTW! As for the grinding, yeah, it was pretty cool, somehow girls were in the pit six or seven people deep, and they absolutely loved putting their asses on my pants. Grrreat time. I guess thrash shows just might not quite be as wild as death or black metal shows, but I can't really comment, as I've never even gone to see Dimmu Borgir or anything.
DEFINITELY want to go see Maiden. I'll see if the same friend I went with wants to see them next time they're around here.

Even if you ignore the long-term benefits, I've been to plenty of shows that are simply unenjoyable without ear plugs... And by unenjoyable, I mean painful.
Re: Went to see Megadeth last night.
Oh, but the twelve Marshalls they had stacked up on stage were just so beautiful...I couldn't deny them...
The other acts weren't very enjoyable without earplugs, but Megadeth was. Dunno why. Maybe proximity to the stage; we didn't get in close until Megadeth.

Re: Went to see Megadeth last night.
A lot of times medicines can cause the ears to ring in young folks like you.m3tall1ca wrote: Funny story. My ears actually have always been ringers. They never stop ringing as it is. Ever. I abused mine growing up because my family owned a business that did loud stuff and I did a ton of lawn care for money. Then I abused them at concerts and in college.. loudass car stereo for years and years. No problems then of course. As an adult I was careful, plugs mowing the lawn even, using the shop vac, etc...
Then I took my wife to one damn concert for her birthday and had good seats. I forgot the plugs and thought - ah well, it's one show and I haven't been to one in years. Pisses me off because I meant to take them but we were leaving for vacation the next day and I was focused on packing and stuff.
Anyways that one concert put me over the edge and they haven't stopped ringing since. I've mostly gotten used to it, but I have to sleep with a noise machine going or I just listen to my head ring. It was hell the first few months. I just hate to see anyone else do what I did, especially with iPods and such nowadays. It's so easy to prevent, and even if it's not so loud at first it's just gonna get worse with age.

Sounds like Tinnitus, though that is usually developed by prolonged exposure to loud sounds. I'm assuming you've spoken to medical professionals about this?m3tall1ca wrote:Funny story. YES - Maiden is a MUST to see live. Truly spectacular.m3tall1ca wrote:DEFINITELY want to go see Maiden. I'll see if the same friend I went with wants to see them next time they're around here.
@gabe - good call. I find that w/ hardcore, rock, and metal shows that you actually get better clarity when listening through earplugs - you filter a lot of the "din" you get from the amps being cranked up so much, and you actually hear the notes better & more accurately. That's the other primary benefit of earplugs for me, since I go to shows to hear bands instead of to get killed in the pit

Re: Went to see Megadeth last night.
Assuming you saw them at the rave? Yeah, Megadeth always puts on a hell of a show, and the crowd is usually pretty hardcore. Best one I went to was a couple years ago, when Earshot opened for them. As soon as Earshot started playing, everyone started booing or chanting Megadeth, and their frontman walked off in like the middle of the second song. But the best part was when the staff started tossing out Earshot t-shirts and merch into the crowd... and it all got thrown back on stage!
Maiden is incredible live too. I haven't seen them for a couple years, but last time I did it was the best metal show I'd ever seen. I'd definitely recommend it to any metal fan. Unfortunately, the nearest they usually play is down by Chicago...
Lately I've been more into local bands. It sounds like you're more of a thrash guy, but if you're into Maiden too I'd definitely suggest you check out Lords of the Trident (http://www.lordsofthetrident.com/). They're a pretty small band, but they're talented and put on a pretty good show (Expect a little bit of kitsch - They take a Manowar-ish approach, albeit a more comical one). However, they usually play up in Madison. They played at the Point's East Pub a month ago, but that was like their only Milwaukee appearance).
I've been digging The Black Saints too, although they REALLY sound like G&R... dunno if you're into that. You can here them at http://www.myspace.com/theblacksaintsrock if you wanna check them out. They play around Milwaukee pretty often.
If you follow any local acts, let me know. I'm always looking for new stuff...
