Considering the 16 bit systems are a decade old, I don't get the Atari Age thing about excluding post NES systems, but my favorite of the pre-NES systems is the Intellivision. Not as many games as the 2600 and not as powerful as the Colecovision, but it had very dedicated developers that made unique and fun games for the system. It has a very nice voice synthesis module (Intellivoice) with games that make good use of it like B-17 Bomber. It's known for its sports games, but has solid ports of Burgertime, Pac-Man, Q*Bert, Bump 'n Jump, and Lock 'n Chase.

I say Colecovision because of the great ports for that time of Arcade games like , Frogger , Donkey Kong , Burger Time , Mr. Do , Mouse trap , DK Junior , a Super cool centipede with trackball , Frenzy , Frontline , Qbert , Super Cobra , Popeye and the list goes on and on , also great games like Smurf , Cabbage Patch Kids: Adventures in the Park , B.C.'s Quest for Tires or Jumpman Jr.
For the first time Arcade ports that actually looked like the real Arcade versions !

I still have the system with about 40 boxed games , last time i played it is more that 10 years ago though

The Genesis, just was a cooler system to me back then. Also, Sonic.

Thanks to emulation, I still think it's cooler.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

2600 has some sweet homebrews. That's also one reason I want to get a Vectrex. Not to mention most of the Vectrex library being public domain. Vectrex is getting a speech synthesizer too (VecVox).

I liked my Coleco much better than my 2600, so I guess that wins. Master system second.

The only gaming system I had before my Master System was a ColecoVision, so, uhm... I guess it's Coleco.

Sounds better than the MSX version (which I'm not even sure scrolls, it seems to play like Space Invaders without bases and with enemies that shoot diagonally, barf).

Still would prefer the arcade version...not JAMMA but there's an adapter for it

I'd rather buy that than the AtariVox and this game. Good homebrew effort though.
