Okay, I have vague memories of briefly playing this shmup in a New Hampshire pizza parlor that also had a few pinball machines around 2000-ish. It was vertical, and took place in a modern/near-futuristic setting, but I'm almost sure it wasn't Strikers 1999. Your ship was either a jet fighter or a helicopter, can't remember which. There were a lot of lightning sprite effects, as part of some sort of attack/bomb, and I think the first stage took place in a "cloud" area with muted blue skies. I also remember a gigantic stealth bomber rushing in from the bottom of the screen during the aforementioned stage, probably a boss.
I've ruled out Zero Gunner, because it definitely had 2D graphics. Any guesses? I'm thinking it could have been one of the Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings games, maybe some screens of those would jog my memory.

Is it UN Squadron/Area 88? That sounds quite a bit like
the second stage, which had a stealth bomber for a
boss
Edit: Oops, I forgot you said it was a vert!

That's pretty close to my memory, but yeah, it was definitely a vert.

Trigon?

Awesome! That was it! My memory was way off on the specifics of everything, but that boss in the second image swooping over the screen is what I remembered best. I guess the "lightning" was the Lightning Sword bomb.
I actually MAME'd Trigon a year or so ago after reading the Xenocide Files review but didn't make the connection until now.

I almost wanted to say Grid Seeker, but the stealth bomber in GS (B2-AT) is one of the player's selectable planes.lgb wrote:good grief, that description sounds more like Grid Seeker imo
Kinect? KIN NOT.
Re: Another dreaded "help me identify this shmup" thread
I hadn't heard of Grid Seeker before, and it's also pretty close to how I was visualizing the game, but I remember now that the cab had a Lightning Fighters marquee with the same typography. So it was definitely Trigon's US version.
Re: Another dreaded "help me identify this shmup" thread
Trigon, where you try to squeeze through the bullets...sheesh.
Re: Another dreaded "help me identify this shmup" thread
10 points for me!
I played this game when I was child during the summer in a camping in the Costa Brava in Spain.. I remember there was a little arcade with some cabinets, pinballs and billiards.
Trigon cabinet was next to a Super Pang and a Gals Panic, you can imagine wich had a crowd around
I liked/like the game although it's difficult, the ship it's very slow and has a big hitbox. Furthermore the enemy shoots fast bullets and there's a lack of power-up and bomb items
Anyway great game
