When BlazBlue was announced I saw people commenting on Gamersyde, who I'm not trying to berate but are modern gamers, that it should be an XBLA game. Because it was 2D. 2D is apparently synonymous with cheap these days, despite 2D graphics being a hell of a lot more time consuming (read: expensive) to produce.

You're right DEL, but I would say that the advent of services that offer small downloadable games (PSN, XBLA, WiiWare, DSiWare, iPhone etc.) as a popular, potentially profitable distribution model could see a return of variety in gaming and a return of 2D games. So far, across the aforementioned platforms, that's certainly been the case. Let's hope the trend continues (and improves).

Yes this will help.
I guess anything is possible when it comes to either rejuvinating or destroying a hobby/sport/activity.
Proof of that is the way that snooker was dragged up from being a sleazy backroom activity 40 years ago to being a tuxedo wearing big money event with heavy TV coverage. All it took was the right money people getting behind it and pimping it through the media (with worthwhile ca$h prizes).
Similarly, an example of the media destroying an activity is Darts. Somebody in the media in the late 80s decided to take it off the air. It crashed and burned as a result.
So what I'm saying is, introduce coverage and ca$h prizes to 2D shoot'em ups and watch how fast the genre grows! As soon as there's a money incentive in a sport or activity, loads of people come out of the woodwork. No-one has yet done this with 2D shooters.
This also raises the old addage; "Be careful what you wish for!" Maybe its for the best that this genre stays niche  .

ok you see the quality of 2D games coming out now are either fantastic or dire. the two very ends of the scale. But If there were a few more companies willing to push out high quality 2D gaming then I think overall the bar would be raised. Its one of the reasons why no one really took the leap to do a HD 2D fighting game until reicentley and why cave is still churning out games on boards from 98

Dave Adams? I remember a tall kid with bleached hair and punk fashion that used to work in CEX. He reminded me of James Harries (of Wogan fame) and was a right nasty piece of work. He told me in CEX that he had just got back from a holiday to Japan once. I asked him what he got up to and he replied "I just f**ked my Japanese girlfriend in her flat the whole time." in front of a shop full of customers. I thought what a bell end. We bumped into him once in Akihabara during the Gamecube launch trip and I saw him in Try Amusement Tower once years ago. My friend also saw him at the GBA launch day in Tokyo. All times he has been on his own so I don't think anyone else likes him either. Does that sound like a Dave Adams?
Although I don't remember him being too much for 'punk fashion', that's definitely Dave Adams!

He could be fairly innapropriate and blunt at times.

Spadgy, you've definitely met Fire-bug before. His stint in ratty CEX wasn't the longest (downstairs in what was Retro.)

Just discovered Charlie Brooker co-wrote the paedo episode of Brass Eye.
yeah, he's done some great work - and in that episode of Brass Eye he's responsible for one of the greatest pieces of television i've ever seen. A true work of genius from Brooker and Morris.

pretty convinced The Day Today and Brass Eye will be looked at many years from now as absolute master class series.

Real shame Morris isn't still writing - a satirical genius (fur q - uzi lover!, 'Trust Me Trousers', etc). Still at least he didn't sell his soul, unlike Steve Coogan (or Rowan Atkinson for that matter).
a few friends still in the entertainment "circle" were suggesting that there is some god awful band (who are now doing quite well) that are - alledgedly - a Chris Morris subversion project. Can't remember the name, but saw some videos - certainly looked like something straight out of Brass Eye so hoping that is what he is up to.

Jam was probably Morris
Jam made me feel quite odd watching it. Blue Jam was odd enough, but the visualisations of some of the sketches was somewhat mind-f*cking.

At times i couldn't tell whether i was amused or just a little disturbed ! The sketch where the couple ask their friend to take over the sexing of someone who has thier eye on their son sketch and the one with the house sale that culminates in the couple offering their retarded cousin to the house owner to clinch the deal ... :O oh god, and this sketch :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgY1UU3sAoM

(also - on the DVD i have of the series, i swear this is in inverted video, white and purple.... which makes it even stranger)

Again, unlike anything else ever seen on tv. A great achievement to replicate the out and out WTF-ness of Blue Jam onto screen.

Sorry all for continued derailment :D

So I walk past the TV and hear the name Charlie Brooker....he's now appearing on some media 2009 review show with Katy Perry's boyfriend and some other usual suspects.
Seems like he's finally cracking into the bigtime.
Not that I care, because despite his Gameswipe show I still believe he's never been within 100ft of an arcade.

Right - I'm going to find some way to download it this time, really enjoyable program.

Edit: Yeah go on BBC, try to delete it from my hard drive this time - YOU CAN'T!

The 'get_iplayer' script is really good, and as a license fee paying customer of the BBC, I feel absolutely entitled to use it.

He was an Amiga boy right? Also PC power or one of them other PC rags. So chances are he was stuck in a dingey littel room by himself rather than a dingey little arcade trading elbow sweat with the peons.
I like him though

some 10 years late to the party but here goes:
I was the 7th member of staff in Whitfield 1992; even chose my Uni on basis of a visit and decision to study, work and live around that way.
Couple of corrections: Fat bloke in Beyond Therapy and CEX was Jason - or Big Jase - who had some pretty incredulous stories from his part time bouncer job.
I met him again 8 yrs ago whilst i worked at IBM, he'd lost alot of weight and looked great! lovely chap: hilarious he used to peel the magnetic strips off VHS / CDs in Virgin, and pop them on peoples bags, then walk out - Alarm goes off and dude with sticker gets it!
Jason was famously bollocked for blowing up the first 3DO in UK by plugging it straight into the mains (yep it was 110v!).

Ash is a lovely chap - if a little arrogant on his "all seeing / knowing" games.
For the record - Bob had the largest PCE collection thanks to my selling 456 of them back to CEX in 2002 (to get a projector) along with my portable CDI and Wondermega (bought from Raven games in 1994). UK and Jap Neo and Jamma system...
And i had the LT that i think Ash then bought... still got a boat load of old machines in my loft though!.

We used to use Vigrin alot of SNES returns - repairing the fuse was easy but no earth meant one false move and you blew the main chip (pop literally!). so we'd "dodge" them to virgin.... lol

finaly - that bleached haired chap with japanese girl friend is none other than Joe Best - he's working in games industry again (bumped into him at waterloo few years ago - Bestie is most famous for having a photo of his penis on a sticker in Whitfield by the membership booth!).

Oh we had good times - i lost alot of money in Beyond Therapy - but it was the heyday of games and even attending Bob's wake 3 years ago was surreal to see how many people i recognised (and recognised me!).

Do i regret leaving, not really - but i did pass on Bob's offer of senior role, and thats a pity but life's about decisions and risks.

as for your friend Brooker - yes thoroughly nice chap - though he and I did have a challenge in so far as he did games reviews for EMAP whilst I did for Ziff Davis... i even have the video from when charlie, hugh, bob and I (and charlie's then girlfriend) all went to vegas in 1995 CES. good times! one day that will go onto Youtube (along with very early school footage of my room mate Eason Chan - google him...)
