New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
Hi
I am new to this forum.
I came here because I am particulary impressed by the knowledge of people such as Fudoh and Emphatic.
I live in Japan, I have a supergun and a Neo candy 29 (with a FBT problem causing a strong whistling).
Because I am quiet upset with my Neo candy that I bought from Yahoo auction, the monitor is screaming like hell because too old,
I would like to purchase a cabinet with a new monitor.
I can buy a new astro city modified with a Wei Ya flat tri-sync monitor and a new power section but I am worried about the quality of the Wei Ya. I think a lot of people had trouble with this monitor. I am not too much worried about the strong scan line in 15kHz because I like sharp picture and I still have my neo candy until it dies.
I can get 3 months warranty for the Wei Ya but I am worried if it last only 2 or 3 years or if I have sync problem with some PCB.
For the same price I can have a New Net City (Toshiba screen) but of course that's a used one (8 years old) and as every used arcade monitor it must have runned 18 hours a day for those 8 years.
So, I would like your advice, what is the best:
A New astro City with a fresh new monitor Wei Ya or
A NNC 8 years old from game center.
Thanks

Hi. It all depends on what type of games you intend to play. The Toshiba monitor is (IMHO) superior in any and every way if you mostly play low res. You have high res games? Play them with your supergun on your TV instead (if possible). Too bad about that whistling sound. I've heard about this, but I can't remember any easy fix right now. Perhaps buying a "new" chassis off of Yahoo? Are you comfortable with soldering/touching the electronics in your cab? Also, please don't put me in the same league as Fudoh. He's like Yoda, and I'm not even enrolled as a Padawan learner.Masamune69500 wrote:Hi

Thanks for your reply
I am impressed by your work on the ultracade uvc. I am planning to buy one
about the Toshiba monitor, I know It s much better.
I am jst worried about the life time of those monitor.
Now the only new monitor we can find are the wei ya
would you prefer a 8 years old Toshiba or a brand new Wei ya
for the candy I am ok with soldering but I can't find any fbt or chassis
cheers

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
go with the tosh...even if its older and done the rounds for several years it would still be better than a brand new wei-ya...providing it has no burn in i would definitely go for the NNC, especially if the cost is the same
Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
My points exactly. You won't get as good low res picture (symmetry is a pain to correct) on that Wei Ya. The only think it really has going for itself is the availability and the automatic switching. Wei-Ya's also known to have sync issues on some CAVE games.jonny5 wrote:go with the tosh...even if its older and done the rounds for several years it would still be better than a brand new wei-ya...providing it has no burn in i would definitely go for the NNC, especially if the cost is the same
Edit: Astro's are much sexier than NNC's though.

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
Thanks for your replies,
So I guess a used NNC is the best choice.
Do you have any idea how long a toshiba monitor could last 24/7?
What do you think about the life time of the monitor in the Egret 2, I can have one for very cheap as a bonus but I don't know if the screen will last long. Actually they even give me the soft that was inside in the game center but they don't have they key so don't know what is inside. Do you have any idea what game is usually turning on a Egret 2.
I have two more questions (sorry to abuse from your help):
1) With all our beautiful candy, I don't think the monitor will last forever. How we will do after they die. They don't make new screen anymore and I tried expansive LCD and plasma but you can't compare, especially at 15kHz (even with XRGB). Are the arcade game condamned to die
2) Except Ikaruga. Do you know any other Vert shooter running High rez and worse having a high rez screen in tate?

Image quality wise, yes. Build quality is also very nice. Button placement on the panel, not as good as Astro IMO.Masamune69500 wrote:So I guess a used NNC is the best choice.
This is all guess work really. So much can go wrong with a cabinet/monitor. It's like trying to predict the weather.Masamune69500 wrote:Do you have any idea how long a toshiba monitor could last 24/7?

As most games are very easy to switch out, this can be anything really. Or do you mean one of those little test PCB's that were shipped with these cabs because of the Japanese law of no empty cabs were to be sold? The EGRET II is a superb cab though, so if you can get one for cheap and have room for it (you do live in Japan after and not the U.S. after allMasamune69500 wrote:What do you think about the life time of the monitor in the Egret 2, I can have one for very cheap as a bonus but I don't know if the screen will last long. 2) Under Defeat, Shikigami No Shiro II, Raiden III comes to mind.

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
Thanks for your advice.
Well the egret II is for 25.000 yens so really cheap
The NNC is 160.000 yens black one.
Now I am even considering the blast city because it's cheap 50.000 yens and I never heard anybody complaining about it.
I want a 31kHz to play Guilty Gear XX and Suggoi!Arcana Hearts 2.
Is there a big difference in the screen between the blast city and the NNC. I can have 2 blast for cheaper than a NNC.
My first consideration was that I wanted something not too old to be sure than the screen last, I guess most of blast are from around 96-98. NNC 2001

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
Just a fair warning on the Blast City, apparently there's some sort of strange monitor problems with them.
Some people have reported a black sludge coming out of them. I do not yet have an arcade cabinet, but I'm sure someone else here would be able to better explain what was breaking on them. I'm sorry I can't say more, as it's all I really know.

Emphatic,
I was wondering,
Did you try Ikuraga at 24kHz from the Xbox 360 with the UVC?
Do you see any difference compared to 31kHz
I am planning to put my neo candy in Tate and buy the NNC (or Blast) for Yoko game
Cheers

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
Sorry, I haven't. Switching to 24kHz was too much hassle for me to do on a regular basis. I will try to do some sort of switch for the modes in my EGRET II for easier mode change.Masamune69500 wrote:Emphatic,

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
So you mean it's not very easy to change from 15 to 24 on an EGRET II.
I may buy one tomorrow for 25.000 yens and I was planning to use it with the UVC like you for XBOX Cave game.
So the display on the EGRET II is not autosync, it's a switch or what?

This is the pic of the New Net city. No game inside so they can't show me it running.
I am waiting for the pic of the Egret II.
I think the NNC is too expansive for 160.000 yens with only 4 boutons lay out.
I just hope the Egret II display can last long.
How old is yours Emphatic?

Emphatic,
I just rode your thread in another forum about the 15 to 24 switching. It looks really like a pain to do.
I just noticed you have espgaluda PCB, did you compare it on your Wei Ya and on the Egret II
Cheers

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
that NNC looks to be in beautiful shape, and as far as price goes, you must take into account you get a much better quality monitor with it....
if it were my decision, i would get the NNC and the egret 2....
to be honest i think you are being a bit too paranoid about the monitors dying....sure they have been used a lot in game centers, but you are only going to be playing on them for a few hours at a time....you still see cabs from the early 80's working fine....
just make sure you get one with a nice working monitor and you shouldnt have any issues for many many years, if at all

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
I want both but I have to get rid of my neo candy 29 first because I have place for only two cabinet in my house (Tokyo
)
I am a bit paranoid because I bought a cabinet on Yahoo auction and the monitor was bad condition, screeming like hell and need to put all the pot to max
Do you have any idea which year this NNC should be, some place says NNC is after 2000, some says after 2003.

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
And I have to agree on this. Just make sure that the pictures give you a clear shot of the actual monitor tube. Tell them you won't buy a cabinet with visible burn in.jonny5 wrote:if it were my decision, i would get the NNC and the egret 2....
I don't really know how old my EGRET II is. My Xiong Ba (with the Wei Ya) is from 2006, but I can't tell you how old the actual monitor is. ESPGALUDA looks much better on my Wei Ya (color/contrast is awesome) but the geometry is way better on the EGRET II monitor, and the scan lines are more subtle. And that's more important to me. So it's a matter of taste really.

That's interesting.
I would have think even colour/contrast looks better for a 15khz game on the Egret II.
So you would think that on a toshiba screen it's even better right?
Cheers

Well well,
I received the pictures for the Egret II and I can have either Guilty Gear XX A core or Deathmiles for free.
It's insane, I want both but it's kind of stupid to have two Egret II in the house
Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
Huge picture is huge!
I would go with the cabinet to the right as it does look much nicer and it has keys, right?

Yes it s waht I was going to do but the trader got upset when I ask to buy only one.
So it was two cabinet or nothing so I just give up.
It's a shame because a Gd-Rom kit +I/O + GGX Accent core was included and they are pretty expensive.

That's too bad. You don't have any friends in Tokyo that wants just one cab? This way you could buy them together. So I guess it's NNC then?Masamune69500 wrote:Yes it s waht I was going to do but the trader got upset when I ask to buy only one.

The NNC at 160.000 with only 4 buttons layer. I feel it's too much.
It's so hard to find NNC in Japan.
I don't know if there is anybody from Tokyo in this forum but I will post a thread in trade just in case.

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
Just to let you know
I bought the two egret ii.
I will have to remove the panel to go in the elevator but I think it s easy.
I will use one at 15 for old game
and the other one at 24 for uvc with input from both Naomi and 360 and atomiswave.
I am planning to connect the uvc directly to the monitor so I can still use the Naomi I/o for the sound snd command input but choose 31 and then downscale to 24. I think it will look better than outputting 15 from Naomi
I am still looking for something for 31 only arcana hearts 2...
How is the Wei ya for 31 only?

Great for you! Why do you need something for 31kHz only? The UVC can handle it and show it @ 24kHz.Masamune69500 wrote:Just to let you know

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
I was in the taito center in akiba today and the 31 looks much better than the 24
don't you think?
I was comparing egret ii and 3
2 is really beautiful but playing ikuraga or other 31 shoot on the egret 3 was stunning
radiant silvergun was on a ii
it may have been only 15khz because I thought the scanline was still very visible
how is the 24 on yours?
Kof 2002 um wad on viewfix it looks horrible
kof sky stage was there too but too much line to play
it looks nice but a little too much like castle of shi.... 2
I played mamorukun and I like it soso
I noticed that the focus contrast and sharpness was better on the ii than the egret iii which have better brightness
I tested the Nnc too and it looks ugly compared to the egret 3.
And I feel always that the colour are not focused at the same place. Kind of blurry image.

Re: New Astro City with "NEW" WeiYa Tri-sync monitor
If you just go to gamecenter an have a look, you'll have no real clue what kind of monitors are in those cabs. Perhaps those EGRET III's doesn't have tri-sync screens etc (and thus will look better, as most trisyncs are shit). This is like when you go shopping for TV's, if you see them at a store, there's no way that you will know that the screens are perfectly setup on each one, because the stores want to selll a certain brand first hand, and that will always have the best setup picture.Masamune69500 wrote:I was in the taito center in akiba today and the 31 looks much better than the 24

Make sure you get the picture as perfect as you possibly can on your cabinets at home, as you'll have nothing to compare them against and you'll be happy about them (I hope). If one of the monitors is a little better than the other, adjust it somewhat so it's closer to the look of your lesser cab, or you'll soon go crazy.

Also, Radiant Silvergun looks like shit IMHO. Ikaruga looks fabulous @ 31kHz, but I almost prefer running it from my Dreamcast @ 15kHz in my EGRET II. Same goes for Shikigami No Shiro II. Perhaps it's a generational thing. I'm 35 years old ffs.
