It was a fun tourny overall. I really wanted to play BG more, as I was just starting to get the scoring going, but once Monday hit last week, the workload just exploded. All my time to play went right out the damned window, and I never got a chance to try and improve my 5-plus million score. That sucked, but priorities need to be kept straight, and the tourny went by the wayside.

With that said, not a bad effort this year, Oldschoolers. There were some spots of disappointment in terms of member participation (I'm included in that), but hopefully that area can be worked on next year (assuming there's a 2010 STGT).

My First STGT

This was my first STGT. I was hesitant to join as i'm very picky about games - dislike being forced to play stuff i don't specifically enjoy and choose to play. I also felt that i was massively outclassed, an impression caused by always being near the bottom on the high score boards. However, i wanted to try STGT at least once in my life in case i was missing out, and the list of week themes gave me high odds of enjoying at least 4 of 5 games. So, the perfect occasion made me register at the last minute.

Skill Level

Turns out that my impression of being outclassed was probly due more to ADD-ness than anything. Most ppl don't post to the high score boards until they have mastered a game, unlike me who gets bored of them before mastering them. STGT is a much better way to measure myself against shmups forum, here everyone is on ~equal footing with ~equal time to compete. As long as you ignore the top 20-30 for classics like Garegga and RFJ, which is populated by those who've already extensively played the games.

I expected to be in the bottom 5%, so playing in this tourney and seeing that my results are pretty good (36th/70 among those with 100% partipation, despite no Garegga experience) has boosted my confidence immensely! My team looked very strong compared to me so my goal for the STGT was to top 3 for us once, and i ended up doing it twice (i finished 3rd/3rd/5th/6th/5th, on a 7-team with 91% participation). What all of this tells me is that i could score well in and 1cc most shmups if i applied the time and effort to them. Not that i will, tho.

Participation

Perhaps i was spoiled having the dynamic scoreboard in my first STGT, but my interest level waned considerably based on how often it was updated. Updated 1-2x per day, i was hooked. Updated every 3 days, no added motivation to play. The first few weeks were very exciting, competing for the top 3 on my team, for the highest rank possible among everyone, and for my team's total ranking.

I think i overdosed in the first 2 weeks tho, and week 3 i forced it a little too much, playing even when the game was pissing me off. By week 4 and 5/6 i was just putting a credit in here and there instead of playing several hours a day. Week 4's S1945II i should have been into bigtime, but just wasnt feeling it. That may be due to overplaying the game a few months ago, and not liking the gold bar mechanic which is important to maximising score. Games where my teammates had a lot more experience than me (S1945II, BGaregga) were also disheartening, it didn't motivate me to put in maximum effort for weeks 4-6. Playing to just maybe push down opposing teams by 1 point is a little meh.

One thing i noticed is it's actually a lot more fun to compete when it's a game i and most ppl have never played. Otherwise i get bored/burnt out much faster. It's more satisfying knowing that you can actually validly compare your scores to the forum masters, instead of to a score that is years in the making.

I'm very happy with my team's participation, i must have gotten very lucky cuz few if any other teams seemed to have such high participation week after week (6-6-7-7-6 for us). I'm proud to have been a part of Drink 'N Fly's best result ever ('06=7th/15, '07 6th/22, '08 13th/24, '09 5th/25). I'll likely be around again in a future STGT to help us get even higher up there. I had a lot of fun!

Miscellaneous

Maybe it's just cuz i'm new to STGT, but i found no shows posting last minute huge scores a little irritating. Sik being the obvious one, but mainly i would have liked the dynamic scoreboards to be more indicative of everyone's gradual progress and results. KET's Garegga score is like a token meaningless entry, i wish he'd posted scores in the other games for us to compare to... To see how he scores under high pressure in 1 week on a game he's never touched before - now that woulda been neat! Though i guess we should be happy to have had him participate at all.

Is this the 1st STGT with no Cave games?

Big props to all participants, boo/hiss to the 100% no shows, and finally, a massive thanks to the organizers!
