Play Magazine - September 2009 (360 shmup coverage)

Post by brentsg »

Play Magazine did a 6 or so page spread on Xbox 360 shmups this month, so check it out if you have a chance.

There won't be any news for folks that frequent this site, but it's still cool to see in print. :)

Edit:

-They cover the economics of the genre and talk about the differences in price expectations between the Japanese and us ugly Americans
-They touch on DLC for various current consoles and briefly hit on the available options to "test it out"
-They cover Cave quite well and talk about DeathSmiles, DDPDOJ BLEX (including the scandal), Futari, and Ketsui
-Otomedius G got a page, as did Mamoru-kun, and Shooting Love 200X (DS and DDP each got a page too)
-There are blips about 0 Day Attack On Earth (Gulti/Square Enix Xbox Live) and The King of Fighters Sky Stage (SNK Playmore Xbox Live)

I knew nothing about those last two so maybe that is news or I have my head in the sand?

they were both mentioned briefly here, but neither one of them looks decent imo.

If you're talking about the Playstation mag published by Imagine, then no. Play Magazine published in North America is this beast.

Ah, right . . .different thing entirely. Last time I bought Play (many moons ago) I seem to recall it was a multi-format mag. Then again, my memory is getting poor

Hello all! I've been lurking around this forum for some time now and finally decided to sign up. Figured this would be as good a place as any to introduce myself and make my first contribution.

Just picked up the Sept. issue of Play and shot some pictures with my camera. Please excuse any glare and my fingers in a few of the pics.

Yeah, thanks!
Always good to see something in print, especially Deathsmiles which as far as I know hasn't got a mention anywhere in the UK press (?).It would be good to have a scan archive - for articles, artwork, OST covers etc...

Thanks Engineer! Going to try and hunt down a copy, been ages since I bought play but for me it was the only game mag I'd get.

The Publisher is a good friend of mine and several months ago I asked him to help me get a Japanese 360 since I had just bought Death Smiles and Otomedius G (since I thought at that time that I could "chip" my US 360). Anyway, they must have looked into it and ran with the ball. Those guys are also very serious gamers..!

No problem! Happy to share.

I found it at Barnes & Noble as well. My local Borders didn't seem to have it. The cover article is Murumasa.

Kinda have to laugh at some of that info probably being pulled off shmups and cave-stg.

I'm definitely interested in grabbing this particular issue. However, I'm in Canada so the chance of seeing this locally is probably slim to nil. Someone wanna help secure a copy for me? I'll cover for all expenses (somehow).

Glad they gave Death Smiles the props it deserves. The more I play it, the more I enjoy it. Just an awesome shmup.

Too bad they didn't mention the MBL version, which with Sakura is probably my favorite version of this game so far.

I also noticed how it says Cave has had "few Western releases". How about none, guys?

International ver. PCBs? That's the closest to Western I can think of.

Donpachi and Storm of Progear both saw official arcade distribution in the US. Then there are the international PCB releases of ESPRa.De., FeverOn SOS and Dodonpachi.

Well, the wording was "and seen occasional licensed ports(but few western releases) on home consoles". So, it's not quite accurate.
