That's why they've allowed games like Rez, Metal Slug 3, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Marathon, Quake 3, Alien Hominind, Castle Crashers, Braid, Worms, Castlevania, N+, Bionic commando rearmed, Portal, Puzzle Fighter, The Maw, Splosion Man, Shadow Complex, The Dishwasher, Virtual On, Banjo-Kazooie 1 &2, Sam & Max, Gunstar Heroes, Mark of the Wolves, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Monkey Island to come to the service. Because they dislike good titles, huh?

Then there's the XBLA shmups....Galaga Legions, Space Invader extreme, Ikaruga, R-Type Dimensions, Omega 5... Raystorm HD is coming and Under Defeat is rumored to have already been submitted for final approval. Then there's the fact that MS is still trying to get Treasure to do an enhanced version of Radiant Silvergun.

Considering that Cave thinks they can get their older games release on XBLA now I think we can acknowledge that any roadblocks that MS put up in front of 5PB preventing them from doing DDP as an XBLA game probably had more to do with concerns over compentency than quality.

XBLA has a policy of not allowing plain old arcade ports. (Unless the game is a rather overrated Treasure game)

N+, The Dishwasher, Garou, Virtual On and Metal Slug are "mainstream" now?

If you're going to parrot this tired old bullshit argument, at least show some evidence of having thought it through for more than half a second.

Metal Slug 3, Alien hominid, The Maw, Marathon and all other SNK titles for XBLA are garbage.

I still think the 5pb/MS ordeal was a lie, though.

I don't think I would go so far as to call it a lie, so much as taken completely out of context. 5pb's XBLA proposal may have been more succesful if it hadn't been along the lines of: "Hey Microsoft! We've got the rights to these awesome games, and an emulator that wasn't reverse-engineered illegally from a PS2 port that we don't have the rights to. We'd like to do a 0-feature port that will have technical issues, but still probably sell well based on the strength of the Cave brand."

The current Sega Genesis and SNK ports should be proof enough that Microsoft has and still will allow old arcade and console ports provided that the developer spends at least 20 minutes throwing in a graphics scaler so the game doesn't look like ass on 1080p set.

I personally feel most of the titles listed there are all excellent games that everyone should at least try once.

Alien Hominid is awesome. Marathon is also decent, albeit quite outdated. Never played The Maw.

The SNK stuff is fine if you're only playing with people in the same room. The net code sucks, but the games are perfectly playable solo or local.
Dale wrote:/\ Thats all mainstream stuff anyway.
I don't think he listed a single game that could honestly be considered mainstream. Just because more than 10 people have heard of it, doesn't make it mainstream.

Oh and  @ shmups being mainstream. WTF?
Agrees that the netcode sucks but if your like me who has no friends that want to come over, its better than nothing (unless your using mame 32k)

Half of what you listed was older PC games or had console releases in the past so yeah. Or was specifically designed for an Xbox or PC release.

Jesus Christ no. Metal Slug 3 uses some horrible filter that you can't remove. I regret buying it and I don't recommend it. It's also not worth buying any game with shitty netcode, especially if it's a fighting game.

It's something like that, yeah. Unfortunately I can't see any major Cave title arriving on the XBLA in the foreseeable future due to licensing issues and well, I get the feeling that they wouldn't want their games "degraded" and shoved on XBLA, but rather released in retail.

I thought metal slug looked fine. I'm not very picky when it comes to older games. I mean, hell, i could easily play them in MAME (the actual arcade games) but i buy them on XBLA for the leaderboards, regardless.

R-type and Metal Slug and Bionic Commando would be the closest thing to mainstream on that list. I still remember the neo geo cabinet with metal slugs in my local arcade and then bionic commando. Ahh, the good ol' days.

Go play Metal Slug 3 in MAME and tell me which looks better. This isn't the only game that does this, Fatal Fury also forced you to suffer the torture of a HQ2X filter.

There's a few indie games I'd actually buy but they force you to be signed into Xbox Live, which is equally as bad. Chances are if it's an SNK game and it's on XBLA, it sucks.

I'd recommend these:

Bomberman Live
Rez HD
Outrun Online Arcade
Ikaruga
R-Type Dimensions
Triggerheart Exelica
Puzzle Quest
Castle Crashers
N+
Aegis Wing (it's free)

I don't recommend Metal Slug 3, E4, Streets of Rage 2 or Megaman 9. I don't own, but I don't recommend Garou, KoF98UM, or MvC2 because of the netcode.

Bubble Bobble Neo, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Braid, Pacman C.E., Geometry Wars Evolved 2 and Gyruss are all missable titles.

None of the others I'm interested in, except for maybe VOOT, which I suck at.

I'd recommend a lot more than just those, but doing so would take this even further off topic. Not a fan of Bomberman Live, btw - found the movement slightly fiddly and lacking the immediate simplicity of the control in the 16 bit versions.

I didnt really like castle crashers, the main game got boring pretty quick and insane mode is a lamely designed hard mode: just more hp and dmg for enemies.
I found a recent XBLA release called Trials HD to be surprisingly good, I expected the idea of a sidescrolling bike trials game with physics to not work well but the control is done very well, allowing for fun time trialing and the harder levels require a lot of skill. There is also a great editor through which you can create tracks as complex or more complex as the default levels.

More on topic, I thought microsoft was getting more lenient with allowing stuff for XBLA when they started releasing multiple games at once, only advertising one of them and the others were less mainstream and/or lower quality.

Bomberman Live's movement is fine, it just takes a long time to get used to using it fluently. It also takes time to adjust to using the analogue stick (which it was intended for) instead of the dpad (which most people associate Bomberman with). It's by far my most played game for 360.

It's getting harder and harder to find people to play with, though. The online community has been really strong but it has to end sometime. I have a bunch of friends which I play with daily and that's enough for me. Sure, there's other games for XBLA which are enjoyable, but the ones with online co-op or competitive online will always be the most popular ones, because they exist on the community inside them. Problem with this is that if there's no community, the game is dead.

This is actually my second reason for avoiding VOOT.

Doesn't VOOT have a pretty large community? Due to the good netcode I can play most japanese players without noticable lag even though I'm in Finland, which is nice. If you want to find people to play with, the community at oratan forums is pretty active but obviously dependant on having people on your friends list, etc.

Some people are hosting monthly competitions on VOOT, now also with an outside japan bracket. Theyre also streaming the comps on ustream, nice way to keep the community active.

Bionic Commando, Braid, Pac-Man CE, and Geometry Wars 2 are some of the best XBLA games. Maybe not your taste (or mine either, at least in the case of Pac-Man CE, and I only played the demo of BC), but they're must-try titles at least.

The low lag is pretty amazing. I actually have more connection problems with US players than Japanese. :?:

The ranked lobby has been kind of dead lately, although I'm usually online at a weird time for Japan that was never too active in the first place (around 5-7 PM my time, so 6-8 AM in Japan). There are plenty of players on the weekends, though. It seems like a lot of the oratan.com people are on the west coast, so I don't see them online so much during the week (since it'd be like 2-4 PM there).

Well i think with Cave doing this themselves they have a chance in getting it on xbla as long as the programming code is not as buggy as (insert game here).

I completely understand where you are coming from, but you and I are completely different in this matter. Yes. There is a difference in Mame versus the XBLA version. Yes. The Mame version does look better, but that certainly doesn't ruin anything for me. I am a huge gameplay guy. If the graphics looked like an Atari 800 game, but played like a Metroid or a Strider or any other great game, I'd be happy to play it.

I'm on the same boat as you are on this. You can also factor in on the affordability as well. 8-10$ a game isn't bad and games like Marvel vs Capcom 2 that fetch high prices on ebay for only roughtly 15-20$ is pretty damn good.

Even if Netcode is bad it's still there and still very playable.

The positives out weight the negatives in my opinion.
