Progress in MAME SH-3 and SH-4 emulation

Post by nikkos010 »

The amazing mamedevs have been working hard on the SH-3 and SH-4 processor recently. And while most of the work is geared towards Naomi/Atomiswave it does have some bearing on CAVE shooters as well. (In fact it's noted in this post that this lays some groundwork for CAVE games such as Ibara)

I've noticed that Under Defeat and Chaos Field do run now (have for a little bit) but run so slowly that it often takes 3-4 minutes to get to the start screen. This dynamic recompiler described in the above link may help that, but I doubt anything will be in a playable form for awhile. But then again, they've made great strides these last couple months...

This might be old news, but I noticed that Guru has Ketsui listed as dumped now, i have no idea how long it's status has been that...

This may fall under off-topic, wasn't sure. Please move if wrong!

IIRC, Ketsui has been dumped a long time ago, but not emulated nor released as a ROM.

Ahh, I thought it hadn't been dumped yet due to encryption reasons. I know it hasn't been released/emulated :D

That's how MAME generally works - they want to dump the actual ROM contents and decrypt them in the emulator. Sometimes they'll compromise on that if it means the difference between getting a game working today and five years from now, but in general there's been a progression toward more accurate/direct use of actual contents (e.g. replacing reverse-engineered protection emulation with the actual microcontroller dumps, going from xor tables to direct decryption for CPS2 sets, and so on). As I understand it, part of the motivation is to get dumps in the MAME sets in a form that could be used to repair the actual boards.

I'm not sure I like MAME anymore, is nothing sacred? Those MAME guys should start working on breaking into the Pentagon or some shit.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

I'm very content to let them work on arcade emulation. I'm not sure the pentagon would stand a chance.
