Do all the cave ps2 ports look bad?

Post by 2dvertical »

I got dodopach dai oujou and it looks pretty bad. I switched to component cable and it looks a little better. I am running the ps2 and lcd and game 16:9, should I try something else? (other than turning my tv on its side). Are they all this bad looking?

If you're not running it in its native aspect ratio (4:3) and in full-screen vertical the image quality is obviously going to suffer - even on my dinky Commodore 1084 DOJ and ESPGaluda both look good (especially in RGB). Mushi and Ibara apparently aren't as faithful to the originals visually, though in my case it's not enough to turn me off them.

TATE. If your TV is big and expensive then either get a wallmount that supports rotation or get some dinky cheapo 4:3 crt tv for $10 and put it on its side. The difference is like night and day.

edit : alternatively put it in tate mode anyway and tilt your head sideways. Your neck will hurt but at least Dodonpachi will look its finest

low res games on a LCD will look like ass.... sad but true.

not to mention lag.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I havn't really got into emulator shmuping yet but it looks like i should have no problem flipping my 19" crt monitor over on its side.
But still i would like to be sure that it is 100% safe to do so. Or does it depend on the make and model? Also does leaving a monitor on its side for long periods damage it?

Monitors are usually ok. Just make sure that the heat can vent.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

It looks shit because you are using a lcd screen im afraid , the ole resolution issue , espgaluda and ddp are both perfect on crt i found the other 2 to be best on lcd with component ..

Some places recommend turning off your monitor and leaving it for 20 minutes then rotating it and leaving it for another 20 minutes before Getting Your Game On. I dont really know why, though, but I'd be suprised to see a monitor that explodes when you rotate it.

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 223BW that I keep precariously balanced on its side for MAME, does the job fine for pcsx2 as well. I just know that some day it'll tip and I'll end up with a sore head and a busted £150 monitor.

DOJ and Galuda both look excellent because they do not have any filtering or other such shittery perpetrated upon them.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Mushi and Ibara. Ibara suffers the most.

I only leave mine unplugged a few minutes when tate-ing. It's enough to prevent discoloration, at least.

I'm sure others have said the same, but DOJ and Galuda look great. Ibara and Mushi not so much.

Most monitors have a demagnetizer function, all you have to do is use it after turning the monitor. That's all, no need to leave it unplugged.

Just note you probably won't be able to use the function for about 10 minutes after your turned on your monitor or 10 minutes after you used the function.

So my best option (not tate) would be to set the ps2 to 4:3 (not full screen, or 16:9), my tv input setting at strecth or something. and the game itself and 4:3.?

Cool I never knew this! So all I have to do is tate my crt and wait for 20 min. turn it on and there won't be any discoleration? Man I hope this works, be great to play my Sky Shark pcb without the pink cloud in the lower left side of the screen.

I wouldn't bother much with Mushi or Ibara if the looks of DOJ or ESP bug you. Like others have said, it's probably the way you're watching it.

But those other two look like crap. A lot of people say Ibara looks worse, but I think Mushi looks twice as bad. It's in blur-o-vision. One of the worst looking arcade to home conversions I have seen(in modern gaming).

It's probably runner up only to Giga Wing Generations. Shame, as there are 2 great games buried somewhere within those awful ports

Or you could buy a degauss wand and not have to worry about waiting at all

aside from the fact that they are not as cheap as hell as a CRT, their limited use+higher cost of games makes that kind of a silly statement

not that cabs aren't rockin'

I'm gonna have to get one of those. Do you know if you can buy those at any electronics store, or do you have to buy them online? I see them online a few places, but I'll check some local stores first.
Thanks for the suggestion.

yeah I notice the cheapest ones are from a seller in Hong Kong, and you need a special ac converter adapter to use it which they don't include with it? I guess I'll get the $25 one from the U.S seller.
