Checked out SCEE's PS3 Wipeout HD Fury upgrade yet?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I've noticed that on the USA PSN site, they've got the all-new Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe's Wipeout HD Fury upgrade expansion pack available for purchase at a respectable pricepoint of $9.99 USD. There are eight new tracks to try your hand on...it's about time that the ol' Wipeout HD gaming engine got a new track selection considering W-HD 's intial worldwide release back in September of 2008. ^_~

According to the Japanese PSN site, it listed this W-HD Fury upgrade as an 738 MB file d/l.

What are your thoughts and comments about this new-fangled W-HD Fury upgrade?

Really enjoying it so far, the new tracks look stunning and the extra race types are a welcome addition - Eliminator sees you attempt to score the highest by destroying other racers, Zone Battle has you race opponents on the Zone tracks and Detonator takes place on Zone tracks covered with increasingly challenging waves of mines and bombs that have to be destroyed using the pulse cannon (which depletes and has to be re-filled by going over speed pads) making for a great mix of shmup and high-speed racing. Can't wait to get back into the online.

That's great to hear that W-HD Fury is worth the d/l. ^_~

I'm going to have to break down & buy another USA based PSN prepaid card to do so. Glad to see SCEE finally releasing a new upgrade for this super sexy W-HD anti-gravity racing franchise. ^_~

SCEE would release small upgrades to it's old W-HD game and it is currently at version 1.40 as of right now.

Eight tracks for 10 bucks? Seems abnormally high. Do they count inverse and upside down as new tracks now?

I had to get an software update for the regular version of W-HD...it upgraded it from version 1.40 to version 2.01. After that auto update, I then proceeded to install the W-HD Fury upgrade and it is now officially at W-HD Fury spec with version 2.01 firmware status. ^_~

The new background effects that comprise of a typical Wipeout anti-gravity hovercraft racer is a cool departure from the static screenshot that were featured in the original W-HD game. ^_~

The update is awesome. The new tracks look great, and eliminator online is lots of fun. There's a whole new set of grids to play through as well. It's well worth the $10, probably the best deal on psn seeing that they could have easily released the game on disc for $60, and I would have bought it.

enitrely new campaign mode, including a number of new gameplay modes.

Graphics engine looks to have gotten a little bump and the overall art has improved a ton (not that it was bad, but the tracks look a lot sexier than their HD equivalents)

Definitely worth the cash, pretty much the best PS3 game just got even better.

And congrats to them for not reintrocing the friend list bug for a third time! ;)

No, it really is eight:

Modesto Heights (Pure)
Talon's Junction (Pulse)
The Amphiseum (Pulse)
Tech De Ra (Pulse)

Plus the Pure zone tracks, which are only usable in Zone, Zone Battle, or Detonator modes:
Pro Tozo
Mallavol
Corridon 12
Syncopia

When I went to buy Pulse, people just went around the question when I asked it or gave me an inflated number counting the inverse versions. Well, I was pretty mad to find out the game just had 12 tracks, not 24. It was the first Wipeout I ever purchased too, and that was a real disappointment. I really appreciate the straight answer.

Now that we got that out of the way, the latter 4 tracks seem rather padding-rrific. It doesn't look like they put much effort into them.

The thing I do not get about wipeout hd is the slow speed. I could drive my Astra around that course faster :lol: . I once dl-ed the demo and I fell asleep behind the wheel. And those narrow tracks..... Is this a Japanese mountain arcade racing game? no.
*tip for wipeout designers. Make the tracks 5 times wider and the speed 3 times faster. I guess by then the tracks will have to be longer as well because you would burst through the levels. Oh wait, maybe high speed is not wanted by everyone.

As you progress through the game the speed increases dramtically through different speed classes (Venom, Flash, Rapier & Phantom). Believe me, racing on Venom is nothing at all like racing on Phantom - also, while the width of the track might seem prohibative, once you're in the faster speed classes the tracks don't seem nearly as narrow (usually because you're drifting around multiple corners at insane speed). For example, here's a video of a race at Phantom speed;

Yep, the Wipeout HD and Wipeout HD Fury gaming engines both utilize a 60 frames-per-second framerate and looks quite jaw-dropping on a 1080p HDTV monitor. ^_~

Altogether, with the Wipeout HD game program at version 1.40 with 1005MB file (including all the previous auto-updates prior to version 1.40) + auto-update file to version 2.01 with a 109MB d/l + another 738MB d/l to upgrade it to W-HD Fury = a whopping 1,852MB file for the overall resulting W-HD Fury game program. It is now approaching a decent DVD-sized PS3 game if you will...just no need to deal with a physical DVD or Blu-Ray based DVD-Rom disc to play it as it resides entirely on the PS3's HDD for posterity. Of course, if the PS3's HDD goes kaput, so does your W-HD or W-HD Fury game as well. Best to back it up for safekeeping purposes should the HDD "bite the dust". ^_~

Wipeout HD on a nice HDTV is absolutely amazing, and the new Fury expansion overdelivers on quality once again. Great to see this series still kicking ass after all these years.

The Fury add-on is fantastic and totally worth the money. 80 new campaign events (the original release had 87), 3 new game modes, new ship models, more tracks... can't argue with that. Best game on the PS3 for my money.

Some pics I took with the in-game photo mode;

Yeah, I got the 360 version. I've no idea what's going on with the reviews, because I love the game. Framerate clould do with some work and the GPS thing is totally broken, but it's a great laugh and the vehicles control brilliantly.

Yeah, I fired up Wipeout HD Fury the other day on my USA region PS3 and saw the two different FMV adverts playing...that is a new thing for this PS3 game indeed. It isn't necessary but if the ad sponsor needs to get their money's worth, so be it. ^_~

It supposedly added 6 or 7 secs to a loading screen and it happened 3-4 times an hour. It didn't affect in-game performance.
