Cabal-Style games

Post by Domino »

I just can't get enough of them. Could be the custor, the rolling, and all the dodging of the bullets that makes me addicted to them. :P

Anyway I own these four games:

Cabal (legit joystick version modded to make the roll button button three)
Blood Bros (sequel to Cabal and pretty much superior to Cabal)
NAM-1975 (oh yes, love the run/rolling idea)
Gamshara (from Mitchell, made in 2002 and it's currently the last of the Cabal style games).

So what makes a Cabal-style game:

* There's the custor on the screen for shooting.
* Character's must move left/right only.
* Third Person view.
* Most games have a rolling/evading button to dodge bullets, but not all of them have a button like that.

Other Cabal-style games (which I'll pick up their PCBs soon):

Rambo III
GI Joe
Dynamite Duke

Now the question is there anymore arcade Cabal-Style games out there? I believe there's a few more but I don't remember anything ATM.

Wild Guns for SNES.
Iwanaga for the PC

And I guess Sin and Punishment qualifies, too.

MAWS has a category that lists arcade games of this type.

Devastators for me is not a Cabal-style shooter. Of course they share similar ideas of using objects for cover but there's no custor for firing at the enemies (except missiles which is a different case altogether). While it's a third person shooter, it's not a Cabal-style game in my book.

I forget...does G.I. Joe have a cursor, or is it just a running shooter?

Riot is one of the best games ever made. It toys with aiming in two different planes at once, a real challenge of accuracy. You also deal with using cover strategically. You also half to plan your cursor movements well to get on the enemy. The game will also offer a challenge without equal it is retardly hard. Great Art Style, level design, and creative enemy setups.

Riot also has one of the coolest endings on record. The attract is pretty interesting too.

Devastators dared to be different, but it was kind of a dumb idea to have the UZI shots skip into the dirt 20 feet away like that. Still loved the game; it was my first loose PCB purchase (or maybe my second - after another Cabal-style shooter, the immortal SPINAL BREAKERS starring Captain Waffle - I should swap out Bill sometime with the Captain avatar I made up long ago to see if anybody will notice).

@ Damocles: Yes, it has both. The horizontal position of the cursor is locked to your character's position onscreen, however (i.e. you move side-to-side to aim at things left and right).

Gamshara's name sounds suspiciously like Gundhara by Banpresto...plays nothing like it and doesn't look much the same either though.

"WWII Alone" for the Apple iPod Touch / iPhone is worth checking out if you're a fan of this subgenre, although it lacks a cursor.

And probably the biggest profile game in the genre right now, is Kojima Productions' "Metal Gear Solid Touch", which is an interesting little Cabal-esque re-imagining of the mega-budget MGS4 (cursor included, but uses Time Crisis style dodging).

Riot is a fine game, but nowhere near "best game" status. It's also not a very hard game, it gets very predictable after a while. I can 1cc it easily, something I can't do with Nam 1975, for instance.

There's also Pirates, a decent game by a Spanish company called Nix, and Hard Times, which might be a hack of Blood Bros, though. Oh, and Alligator Hunt, also by a Spanish company (Gaelco).

if you are into the Dynamite Duke style of games, check out Dead Angle and Empire City 1931 (one is the sequel of the other, I believe). Also Punisher for NES. None of these games is "excellent," but the genre is relatively small so it is interesting to keep track..

Another vote to SPINAL BREAKERS - Yes, all 2P sprites in games should be blue.

Alligator Hunt is also very fun. Really their aren't any bad Cabal style games that I've played though.

Nope, no manual movement other than on the 2D plane you're standing on at the front of the screen. PN03 has you moving in and out as well.

Rambo III is a bitch because you can't roll in the game at all. It plays more like a shooter than anything else (just wait until the last boss, oh boy).

SPINAL BREAKERS (sorry Ed) IMO is a pretty shitty game. The game is made as a quarter eater and you can get damage if you roll. Terrible design flaws.

Alligator Hunt is pretty meh.

Gamshara is more good stuff, but going to trade it to get another game. I'll get again in the future, it's not hard to fine one in Japan.

Cabal and Blood Bros can rape you in the later stages. Get as many grenades as you can!

I must've paid less than $50 for it so I don't have THAT much allegiance to it

It gets rather arghtastic in a hurry. Probably meant to be played w/ memorization and shooting bad guys quickly mainly.
