Looking for an alternate arcade emulator

Post by evil_ash_xero »

I have MAME, but no matter what, I keep having sound issues with a couple of games.

Are there any other emulators that run Xexex and Layer Section, that are good?

You either don't have the latest version of game, have the settings wrong, or your computer is not fast enough to run the games.

My computer is fast enough. My games are the latest dumps. What settings should I change?

I got Layer Section working in Raine. So, one down.

Final Burn Alpha supports a lot of shmups.

Do the Raizing games run any better in it, than in MAME?

Damn, you're still having this problem? That sucks.

Raine's missing a lot of the visual effects for RayForce, so I don't know if it'd be desirable over sound issues. You could emulate the Saturn port in SSF.

MAWS includes other emulators in the listings of games that... you know, run on other emulators, but there's nothing listed for Xexex. MAME might be the only game in town for that one.

I think the problem is slowdown. The music starts screwing up when it slows down. Kind of "hiccups". I messed with a bunch of sound and video options, and that was a no go.

I have Layer Section on Saturn, and i'll be getting Xexex for PSP soon, so I guess it's OK.

I'm not too knowledgeable with this kind of stuff, but have you tried different versions/builds of mame? Some games run better on different versions.

Well, is it fast enough to run the games fullspeed, or isn't it?

Also, you need to pair the latest release (i.e. one from pleasuredome) with the latest MAME builds. The ROMz are only half the story (actually far less than half the story since many haven't been changed in years yet emulation has improved dramatically).

Try turning off auto frameskipping. That tends to solve any problems I've had with computers being only marginally fast enough.

Press F11 and see if it sticks at 100% even during the skipping.

Alternatively you can hit F11 and then F10 to see how far above 100% it gets. If it's barely hovering there, then it's likely going to hit nasty snags occasionally.

Also, coupled with this, use a fixed frameskip.
And if the sound stutters, it's your machine. Those 2 games stutter sometimes on my machine when it's in particularly intensive sections.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
