What do you think about this new Transformers 2 film?

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

I went out and watched this newest Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen film from director Michael Bay today. At my local movie theater, it was presented in Digital DLP format with THX sound system in place. Clocking in at 2 hours and twenty minutes long, it is quite long indeed, plot-wise. Quite impressive with the usual ol' standbys of ILM and Digital Domain supplying the CGI effects this second time around. ^_~

The new re-imagined Devastor is quite a huge behemoth to behold. It was interesting to see an old Transformer favorite by the name of Jetfire make a special apperance but never expected to see it revived as an SR-71 Blackbird reconnisance spy plane instead of the F-14 Tomcat jet realization of the original Jetfire Transformer toy from 1985.

The real reason why Bandai didn't allow it's 1985 Jetfire Transformer toy to be portrayed as is (in reference to the Macross Variable Fighter mecha) on the Transformers cartoon series was the stipulation that it had to be changed and another name revision to avoid infringement on Bandai and Tatasunko Productions (with the Super Dimensional Fortress Macross anime) along with Harmony Gold and it's Robotech anime series. Thus the name change to Skyfire and a completely new fighter jet re-tooling but was never released as an official Transformer toy. Some original first released Jetfire toys still have the Macross signia stickers on the booster jetpacks as a surefire sign that it was produced by Bandai themselves and not Takara. ^_~

What do you think about this new Transformers 2 flick?

With the way how it ends, it seems that a third Transformer sequel would be in the works. The battle scenes between the Autobots and the Decepticons are more action packed this 2nd time around compared to the first one. Probably due to ILM not having to create all the Transformer CGI characters from scratch this time around. ^_~

And when did Takara merge with Tomy? I've notice that all the current and newest Transformer toys for distribution in the USA say licensed to Hasbro from Tomy Corp. instead of Takara. What's up with that?

I suppose if a different director had been given the reins to direct the sequel, would it be better though? ^_~

That would be the necessary outcome.

But then it wouldn't be a Michael Bay film with his usual over-the-top action scenes and explosions galore, right? He has his methods of doing things a certain way and of course, with Hasbro and Tomy's ultimate stamp of approval. At the end of the day, it's business as usual, folks. ^_~

For me it was too unbelievable to take seriously. 45 minutes of near hit misses just really starts to get boring. Last I heard those planes can shoot missiles at pin point accuracy, yet two people running can dodge them?

Give me a break.

If there were a bullet counter, it would multiply the death counter by about a billion to one. The decepticons were pretty useless considering how big and powerful we are thinking they are. If they are demonstrating their powers by knocking stuff over i'd give them 10/10, but those guns on their arms are about as useless as pea shooters.

Its ok having effects if they are put to good use. Even Bay's comical acts are not that great. If your a Megan Fox fan you will see something worth watching, but seriously she needs to be in porn with a body like that. The way Bay exploits her is not a good sign for the movie itself imo.

The movie itself screams for a mature rating, but since its sticking to its roots of the cartoon on the scale of things I suppose its alright. The girl that transforms really put me off and I hated the smart cars. It just seemed out of character of the movie to me. I thought the original was the better movie.

So what did I think of it? Its a mess of a story, the movie is far too long. Only the effects save it, but its nothing you haven't seen before in the first movie.

I don't know how far Cybertron is, but Megatron got there pretty quickly in Transformers 2. In one editing cut, he went from Earth to Cybertron, then came back.. Really silly things like that don't do it for me.

The first one was a self-contained story, and so any sequel was pretty much guaranteed to be a bloated cash grab. I knew as soon as they were making a sequel that it would be a mess. I wasn't wrong. :P

At least Ravage makes an appearance in this 2nd film but doesn't live long enough to see the last of it's nine lives. In the classic cartoon series, Ravage was one cool stealthy cat indeed but always survived to live another day to do Soundwave's bidding. ^_~

I see your into the franchise, with the depth and knowledge you possess mr PC Engine Fan X. You seem to pick out certain bits of the movie rather than give your opinion of the overall presentation. Tell us all Mr PC Engine Fan X!!

So far, the reviews I've seen range from sorta' OK to disappointment to out-and-out trainwreck. with the overall tone leaning toward the latter. Think I'm going to pass.

A friend of mine did sound production work on this movie. He said that it was incredibly raunchy for a PG-13 film. True?

It has been revealed that Megan Fox is into that bi-sexual orientation thing as mentioned in a recent Esquire magazine. Yeah, with a killer bod like that, how can anyone resist her? She's just eye candy for movie viewers anyways. ^_~

I personally thought that this second Transformers film was pretty good in terms of action scenes with the usual way over-the-top pyrotechnics being set off. With a bit of tighter pacing, it could've been better (but as with some directors, they want as much time to tell their definitive version of the story on the big screen). So it's a big toss up between the director and his/her film editor(s) to lengthen or shorten a film before general release.

Even James Cameron's Terminator 2 had to be edited down for time length consideration. So when Pioneer released the Special Edition version of T2 on Laserdisc and subsquentially on VHS format as well, it was cool to see with the extra additional film footage not shown on the big screen that he originally wanted audiences to see it in the first place. ^_~

Sure, the plot has some loopholes in it but it really isn't meant to taken seriously. After all, it is just summertime movie blockbuster fare with the usual Hollywood stylized embellishment added for extra flavor. ^_~

First one wasn't great, mostly because of Shia "I ruin movies" LeBouf or however he spells his name this week. Not gunna bother with this one, since it's getting just awful reviews (go read Ebert's review, it's actually really funny how much he hated it)

Want to force Even Stevens out of my head by blunt trauma whenever I see him.

Edit: only seeing this if friends/family ask me if I want to go with them. Same as with the first one.

Everytime Bay comes out with something I have that "Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you" song stuck in my head. Man that was a sweet song.

So one time this turd called Stealth came on the TV machine, and they had this high tech smarty-man stealth fighter fighting other planes... in a dog fight. Dog fighting. With a plane supposedly from the future.

....

Real life air to air fight:

Some Guy: I'mma flying my plane.
F-22: I'm an F-22! Hey I see a guy. I don't like that shit! *pew pew*
Some Guy: Yep yep safe and snug as can be, this is the life for me.
*Some Schmuck asplodes*

It's made by Michael Bay.
The point of a Michael Bay movie is to see how big and loud the trainwreck is.

Real life air to air fight:
Hey, we've all seen the news. Realistic depictions of warfare would look like Microsoft Flight Sumilator played on a 386, with some blase Southern-accent radio chatter over top.

Who wants that in their movie about warring tribes of spacefaring robots that turn into Camaros?

The first Transformers was one of the worst films I've seen in an actual movie theatre.

I have no reason to see the second...

Michael Bay is the worst.

So... is it a nice popcorn type of deal? Did you (who has actually seen it) go "Whoa", Keanu Reeves style during it more than once?

I've heard that lots of CGI work went into the first, just to enhance The Fox. I thought that Australian hacker chick was kinda hot in the first though. Me like the blondes.

I think Bay is a brilliant director. He infuses his personality into his movies perfectly, and those movies say "I'm a douchebag."

But we can all go to Hot Chicks With Douchbags to see that.

I actually thought The Island was decent, right up until the point it became one long meaningless action sequence. I like my action sequences to not go on forever and have some reason to be.

I saw this the other day and though it was brilliant.

Probably for all the reasons that people will dislike it.

If you broke it down it would sound like the worst movie ever but i left my brain at the door and got exactly what I wanted.

Robots fighting and amazing SFX mixed in with more robots fighting and more amazing SFX.

I expected nothing less and loved it.

I can deal with lackluster SFX...BUT IT MUST HAVE STORY.

I can say as an adult this movie sucked to me. I cannot believe that today's kids would like it either...I guess Bay thought lotsa robot fighting sfx and Megan Fox booty on a motorbike would automatically make this a hit.

Pure shit. Even if you go just to watch LOL ROBOTS AND EKSPULSIONS it fails - who do you root for? There was no drama, and we didnt really get to know any of the characters. Big shame because the first one was pretty good, if a little over the top. This was like over the top X1000 - which gets lame after about 15 minutes. Movie dragged on about an hour and a half longer than it should have. My head still hurts.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]
