I grew up playing arcades too but that wasn't until the early 90's. That girl who said the football arcade comment hasn't touched a game in her life.
I was playing Gorf in my grandparents basement when I was in grade school. Anyone know the credentials on these tools?

I might be wrong on some of that for some of you, but having experienced both ends of this argument I would say the 90's had the right balance of both worlds. We are now treading dangerously towards padded walled rooms with laptops in them.
There seems to be a lot of truth in that.
I see too much of the attitude; 'why should I step out of my home?' nowadays :? .

As for the vid, GaijinPunch was right;
They had their facts right in the first 2 minutes, then it went downhill.
It started ok, then went into complete gobbledegook. Every statement was wrong in the second half.
The discussion underneath the video was a 50/50 mix between informed people telling them 'what time it is' and ignorant blue-rinsed sheep, eugeneleyritz being a good example.

It comes down to this; you can't make informed or derogatory comments on something you haven't experienced yourself. The people in this vid aren't old enough.

I've already done this -- once and for all eternity. The idea behind that article was to write something which I would then be able to link until the end of time, whenever I found myself involved in an argument about arcade games in some godforsaken forum or other.

It's really liberating -- you can't imagine how many times I've tried to explain these things to people, but always failing because I didn't have the time/patience to sit down and post the 4,000 or 5,000-word replies necessary.

But those times are now over. Linky linky, and whoever is capable of getting it will get it.

And now I am doing the same for RPGs.

Two or three good reasons:
The Coop wrote:A couple nights ago, we had ourselves a nice, big thunderstorm. Not only was it a storm, it was storm that formed from two storms converging over us. It resulted in some serious winds being kicked up, a rather long downpour, a steady hour-plus rain after the heaviest stuff ended, and a light show that rivaled the last storm I talked about in here... except this one was more colorful. Yellow-orange, orange, pink-orange, pink, pink-violet, violet, blue-violet, blue and blue-green all lit the sky up. Long bolts snaked through the clouds, and some of them had several colors in one stroke. Saw some bead lightning, a few bolts that stayed lit up after the clouds had gotten dark (rather cool effect), and in general, a great show from my bay window.

About three hours later, it was storm time again. A second one blew in, and dumped heavy rain on us with yet another nice light show. This time though, the steady rain lasted for a couple hours after the heaviest stuff ended. When I went to bed, I was lulled to sleep by the rain outside.

Oh god. What a bunch of self centred, vacant headed cunts. I actually found that upsetting to watch. Poorly researched, insanely boring.

I love how they equate playing something online to sitting next to some scary guy at an arcade and being thrashed at Street Fighter 2. None of these people have ever set foot in an arcade. They would be stabbed.

'You can continue until you win, and it sucks!' Imagine if you played something like Resident Evil 4 with an action replay cartridge, so you didn't take any damage and you had infinite amunition. It's exactly the same thing. It would suck.

Ugh. It's not as bad as others make it to be, but it gets to a point (I'd say that it's around the four minute mark) when they start to stick their heads up their arse.

The main reason why i think arcades failed is the cost for the player

In the past Uk arcade around about the time CPS2 was rocking hard a game would cost about 20p or 30p and megadrive games would be about 50GBP and up. once you got your game there were few places you could trade in I recall hearing horror stories about friend of mine sending away mega drive games to be traded with a company for 3GBP a pop only to have the game disapear on them and never get any compensation.

these days a game of just about anything new is a quid a go its pretty much the standard you get 10 mins play time if your lucky. but you can go to a store and pick up a new title for the 360 for about 35GBP (cheaper if your a smart shopper) and play it to death take it back a couple of weeks later and trade in for another new game hey you might get lucky and find some class A drugs inside  .

This is I feel why arcades fail over here. it was never mentioned in this video  just bullshit about how grinding a land and playing a complex game of stone paper scisors on WOW is 'art' and that consoles were perfect replications of the arcade. There have only been a few cases of really great arcade ports.

Saturn - STV stuff (becuase its a saturn inside a cab
Saturn - and the Capcom fighters (ram carts and some kind of magic)
Dreamcast - and all the naomi stuff (because its a Dreamcast inside a cab)

its only been years later reicnetley with the 360 and the PS3 where stuff been pretty much arcade perfect or better (if there is such a thing as better than arcade perfect?) I think there is SFIV has more characters and its also been balanced and has good (not great) online mode.

The same analog could apply to pinball as well. After watching the "Tilt!" pinball documentary, it mentions something about the pinball industry failed to raise the price of playing a pinball game to roughly a dollar per game in order to justify the overall production costs of making a brand new pinball table from the ground up and getting them into the proper arcades or street locations. So when Williams folded their pinball division, that was the final straw. I used to marvel at all the cool and latest Williams pinball games that came out back in the early 1990s...very impressive pins indeed. I recall playing against a fellow strange on a Williams Demolition Man pinball table and scored over 1,000,000.000 points on my final ball by playing with the Trigger grips (your scores naturally are higher if you do play it with the grips setup). ^_~

While the boards got cheaper (Triforce, Naomi and the like), the actual cabs didn't. What's the point of having a cheap Dreamcast powering the graphics, if the actual cab has three screens, fifteen buttons, two levers and five pedals that cost $$$?

The point is the arcade game manufacturers seem to be caught up in making these so-called deluxe sit-down cabinets or uprights that provide a unique gaming experience that you can't get at home. Namely, Namco's Wangun Midnight: Maximum Tune racing series that's powered by a Sega Chichiro motherboard still hasn't seen the light of day as a home game console port. So the only way to play it is at your local arcade hangout -- talk about uber-exclusiveness when it comes to arcade racing/drifting-type based games. ^_~

also my point was about the arcade tech being caught up by home consoles. fact is it used to be about just swapping out a PCB and having a little cheap cabinet. now its about having a game experience you cant get at home.

And I still have yet to find a MT machine. I'm itching to play the game, the soundtrack is amazing.

From the transcript:
Josh: The real case in point is the Neo Geo. This is a system that was designed to be as good at home as it was on the arcade. The games were the same in both. And even though the price for one was abnormally high, the games were very boring. They weren’t the kind of games people wanted.
What. The. Fuck.
They had a point when they mentioned the cost. Then they went downhill.

EDIT: Wow, this thread it *ancient*.

One play of Galaga? That'll be $1. Thank you come again.

Sometimes I wonder if public transport is the main reason it's still alive in Japan..

Also I don't like playing Final Fight because Hulk Hogan's head doesn't explode after I kill him. What kind of reward is that, guy? One of the most annoying guys ever.

There is no doubt that this is a major contributor to many of Japanese industries:

-Manga
-Internet Cafes
-and of course, arcades.

Very easy to pop into any of these and kill an hour before going home and having your wife bust your balls.

It isn't about being bad at games. Shooting games aren't pushed on gamers like FPS, racing, and hell even fighting games are. Everyone has to go out of their way, in one form or another, if they want to play them.

Then it becomes more about choice (or willpower I suppose). Hmm, should I die to bullets in an offline obscure game over and over or should I kill people online in the latest popular FPS because "me mate was awping noobs in CS at X-Cafe last night" over and over and over.
I haven't actively browsed/used this forum in many years and it's no longer an accurate representation of me.

I have retired from genre-specific content creation after 13 years, but I'll always love this little genre in my own personal way.
