Garegga has the best gfx/ost combo on the list (maybe Rayforce). Just look at Gun Frontier. That's a dated abomination. The dark and detailed look of Garegga is perfect for it. If it was remade by Cave today it'd probably look like an Easter decoration. Then you'd have to listen to squealing and shit. I hate Ibara.

Mars Matrix gives me headaches, but huge. fucking. props. on this.

cave is what is drawing new people to this genre....

of all the years since Ketsui's release, it hasn't come into the Top 25 this way. A petition starts to get it up there, and bam, it's now considered one of the top 5 shmups. A PCB. Which most people don't own. Is in the top 5.

But we are now getting to a stage where Ketsui boards (naturally, given their price) have exchanged hands many, many times - meaning more people than you think are getting the chance to play it. It's not like each board sold goes straight into a hardcore collector's vault; never to be seen again. Primarily, it's a game that's bought to be played.

The bigger issue, though, is more the vote weighting. Ketsui didn't score well on this year's list because tons of randoms stuck it down with a [1] next to it - it did well because the small-ish circle of people who have played/owned it, rate it extremely highly indeed.

if you read through the KDF thread, its mostly just people who own the board acting the fool and making ketsui related jokes....not much of a campaign if you ask me.....

if people voted for ketsui without ever having played it that is silly.....but based on the listings jpj was providing as people cast votes for ketsui, almost every name i saw was people who either had regular access to the game or owned it.....

its not that rare.....id be willing to bet there are over 20 people on here that own the PCB....and that provides a lot of other people with a means of playing it....

its expensive, but if you want one its not that hard to track down relatively quick

But people would have more of an opportunity to play it if the price weren't, oh, I dunno, close to a grand USD right now. It would make more sense if the price of the game were lower so people could experience and then vote for it with a more accurate mindset about the game, instead of people either not being able to play it due to the inaccessibility of the game because of how sought after it is, making the price what it is today. It's sought after mostly due to word-of-mouth. When I bought Ketsui one of my non-shmup friends immediately said "isn't that the holy grail of shmups? nice buy." and he hasn't even seen any footage of it.

Just came here to say that 90% of the Ketsui voters haven't played/extensively played the game.

I'm not saying people who haven't 1cc'd the game aren't entitled to have an opinion of it, but most people have only played it at friends/conventions/arcades and haven't actually owned it.

I'm sure having a higher score means his opinion of the game is superior to mine and everyone else's here.

pg, you make some very sage and salient points*, but I'm thinking you'll just have to accept that people vote for different things, for a whole host of reasons. This includes fleeting whimsy, or maybe the fact their dog died the day they 1'CC'd a game, giving it a special poetic poignancy. Who gives a fig though, right? I mean, surely you can't say it's a mistake for someone to let personal opinions influence their erm...opinions. I voted Mushi because it single-handedly drew me not just back into shoot-em-ups, but back into videogaming following a 7-8 year hiatus. I also happen to appreciate the game's technical merits, and accept that on that basis alone it probably ain't the greatest. You see where I'm coming from. So, strange? Fair enough. But mistaken? I think that goes a little too far. Respect an' all.

incognescente didn't have any problems with my thread and even linked us in the discussion thread. and i think i said in one of the poll-related topics that initially KDF was supposed to be a team for me and two people at arcadeotaku, and the thread was supposed to be a way of carrying on sonic's thread but from an alternate perspective (and hopefully result in a bit more drama ), but it kinda gained some momentum and all went a bit weird

i can understand some people being a bit dismayed that shiki 2, dragon blaze, or whatever, is dropped from the list. so i would say maybe you too should have some sort of [insert game] appreciation thread, if only to remind people what a great game that was. i reckon next year i'll do something for MMP

i don't think a voting campaign during a voting poll should seem so foreign. i got the idea from ceph's nexzr thread (although that was somewhat less successful).

i'm all up for discussions about what should or shouldn't be in a top 25. but can we please get away from using bullshit words like "overrated". someone tell me why ketsui doesn't deserve to be in the top 25, based on gameplay.

i like the idea of only being allowed to vote for games that you've posted a score on. i'm pretty confident that everything i voted for meets that criteria.

i think the main difference this year was that there was a bit of a shift in the voting populace....

whereas, in previous years the rules stipulated that only those with the most in depth long term experience with the genre could vote, so we saw a lot more 'classic' titles voted on by the 'veterans'....

with the rules this year it opened up the voting to more people who are newer to the genre, and a LOT of newer enthusiasts are here for one reason.....CAVE!!!

i can understand people's attachment to the great games of yester-year, but you cant discount the revolution cave caused.....

nobody does it as good as cave.....period.....

things changed in 94.....and now 15 or so years later we see the results.....

everyone is entitled to an opinion, and as such they are free to dislike cave....but you cannot deny that in this day and age cave is on top with nobody else even close to the summit

I'd already voted Ketsui in (very near the bottom of my list along with Muchi Pork! and Death Smiles) before the campaign kicked off. These were votes for games to which I've had little exposure, but exposure nonetheless. I'm confident they would rank much higher in my top 25 with regular access.

Plus I just love the smell of Ketsui in the morning - that's actually the main reason it got my vote at all. Is that not enough!?

Yes, it's a bit sad that the Touhou-series and other indie-developed games score so low. Given the scarce availability of some of the top-voted games, I think it's safe to say that the first mentioned games have been enjoyed by lot's more people.

Never mind that though. The list needs more ground-based shmups. Next year I will start a petition to get Adventures of Dino Riki into the top 25.

For the record, I've owned Ketsui (and also sold it on since I needed the £££, though regretted it), and played it extensively. I can't 1cc it, but I don't view that as a valid criterion for judging whether or not you are suffciently experienced with a game.

I'm with that. The Pork got 20 points from me this year, but I fear that too few people have played it (even with it being in Casino arcade, London for several months, that's just a fraction of even UK players :{).
