Summer Carnival '92 - Recca discussion.

Post by redeyeguy_KIO »

RECCA IS FREAKIN' ADDICTIVE!!!

Yeah, it's a game for an old system - an obsolete one - yet it never seems to grow old for me. Despite the game's harsh difficulty, I play it over and over again, like some sort of sick obsession.... and I HAVEN'T BEAT IT YET, EITHER.... AHHHH!!!! Incase anyone hasn't heard of this game already..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_t_Ve4Ljs8I

However, this is doubtful, considering that this is a shmup forum and I'm sure you guys know more about em than I do. :)

So yeah, I made this thread as a dedication to one of my favorite shmups of all time, and easily the BEST game developed for the original Nintendo console.

So far.... I have gotten to the boss of the 2nd level in the normal game (it's the huge machine with the long curling arm things), but he kicked my arse... I only had one life left.

Recca fans, let's get it going!

....btw, I'm new here, so I'll include my HI just now.... at the very end of my post, mwahahahhahahaaaaaaaa.

By far the best Famicom shmup. Super fun. One of the first Yagawa games and really still plays great, even after all this time.

I must admit that I find all the Carnival shmups (Spriggan, Alzadick, Recca andNexzr) totally addictive but I'm a sucker for graphics so tend to play the PC Engine shmups a bit more.
Having read your post I'll give Recca another spin though :D

Recca is awesome and certainly one of the best on the Famicom!
Star Soldier is also high on my list...
BTW, Famicom is STILL very popular in Japan, even for being so old. I understand that it is more popular than the PSP with younger players.

Haven't had so much fun with it although technically it is a milestone on the Famicom. Sprites & sound are outstanding. I couldn't quite keep up with the game's speed though when I played it for about 20min. Maybe I'll give it another try with an emulator although I prefer to play FC games with an actual FC controller.

Recca is pretty much my favorite shooting game… and I only discovered it about 6 years ago

Amazing, addictive, fun.

When I discovered this game in emulation, I could not believe it was real and so I set out to get a legit cartridge and when I realized it, that was the final straw. It shot up to my favorites!

It is amazing what it is for an 8-bit Nintendo cartridge

This poll could really be without option 4 & 5, as no one in his or her right mind can say it's poor or terrible considering the hardware it was made on and the time it was conceived.

I actually first played this game for an oldschool shmup competition on this forum about 5 (?) years ago, and wasgobsmacked by the quality of this (at that time already 12 year old shmup, for a console of 3 generations ago).

To me, this is still awesome today!

I can't really bring myself to play console games in pirated emulation, and so far I haven't been willing to pay the handsome price for the cart + system. Some day I will, though. Better than Zanac? I find that hard to believe, but the risk is worth the price, I think.

This is a really, really awesome game. I finally got my hands on a cart of it for my Sharp Twin and the brutal difficulty just keeps bringing me back.

Try before you buy, dood! Image I doubt the original devs are gonna get a penny from your purchase, but that depends, and is a different discussion anyhow. Recca is great, though, no doubt about that.

Awesome game that a friend recently revealed to me. It is surprising how good it is, I am compelled to experience it's awesomeness! I have only reached St. 3 so far... it feels a bit like a memorizer at times but the presentation is so active.

Since there is so much Recca love in this thread, I'll start the complaining: Playing for score (timed and score attack modes) feels more like a puzzle than a shooter since there are obvious "correct" and "incorrect" ways to score every group of enemies, and while some might argue that all Caravan games are like this, Recca seems much less freeform than some of the others (Alzadick and Star Solider). People also seem to talk about how intense the game is. It's intensity is only due to its speed, not to any creative design.

Not to say that Recca is a horrible game. It's alright, and has some good ideas (the charge shot is clever and ahead of its time) but I don't understand the depth of love it gets.

There definitely is a kind of puzzle element at work here and I think it takes a number of plays to really get the feel for what you need to do to score big. It took me dedicating a night to a good high score on the Time Attack to get one and it was after about 20 runs I got it and just fell for the game.

Unlike a lot of Caravan shooters, it does require pretty precise patterns and I think that gives it a big hurdle to overcome to get into it, but once you do, you can really see why its so lauded. This game is really excellent.

Yagawa + Caravan STG = awesomeness

I know for a fact this game does not have as much depth as DoDonPachi (world's most advanced scoring system ), but it does seem to be quite engaging with the combination of speed, patterns and overall variety available in the game. I find Recca to be extremely engaging, and I will often play the game over and over again until I improve, even if it's just a bit. I won't comment much on scoring, since I have not even beat the normal game yet, but I'm sure it's definitely worth the time. I mean, this game WAS developed for hardcore shmup tournaments, so it must be great for competition and scoring goals.

I am wondering, has anyone here ever beaten Zankai mode? It is only available in the Recca Pure hack, and it kicks my ass in the later levels - I have no freaking idea how to survive when I cannot dodge enemies, yet killing them gives me bullets to the face. Ahhhhh, the madness.... And I am still wondering why the hell they didn't include Zankai mode in the final release, even as an unlockable? It's an excellent demo of the NES' maximum potential, yet it must be accessed only with some sort of cheat device or ROM hack. :(

Man, I just love this game too much! It's about time I review it on my blog, too. 8)

I'd have to say that certain Touhou games are far worse. Particularly Perfect Cherry Blossom.

Haha, wow. I wonder though, why DoDonPachi is still considered the best shmup out there? Unless I'm very much outdated, I would like to know the comparisons and reasons. I thought DDP's depth was a major factor, but now I'm intrigued to know more.

..I also introduced my friend to Recca a few days ago, he thought it was fun, although he could not keep up with the speed + overall intensity of the game.

Bzzzt, wrong. The Zanki mode is accessible through these instructions. It was figured out using a real Recca cart. Recca Pure just helps in skipping all the button-pressing and holding. In fact, you'll see the author of Recca Pure stating that just few posts under the instructions.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Wow, thank you so much for this info... now Recca is officially the best and most complete NES game in my books!

Game Reproductions sells a Recca cart if you want one.

My favorite quote regarding Recca is from the HG101 site. The guys who made Gradius III on the SNES should take one look at Recca and kill themselves (or something to that effect).

After I've tried out this baby, my only thought was: 'Errr... So why, WHY everyone everywhere is shouting that Batsugun was the first danmaku???'

Yea it is like a early manic but instead of bullet hell its ship hell, unless youre playing zanki mode where the ships explode in a shower of bullets.

Recca is a great game to play and the only non doujin game ive 1cced (thanks to the recca strategy guide on this site), I found (in normal mode since i havnt spent anytime in the other modes) that due to the strategy of one weapon been better then others for certain parts of the game, recca is very much a memoriser.

Its a shame that normal and hard modes scoring system is broken due to milking, i wish a hacker would fix that since all that needs altering to (sort of) fix it would be to lower the game time from 1hr to something like 25-30 mins for normal. edit; the score counter needs another zero in it aswell

Plus while im on the subject of wish list it would be cool if someone make a homebrew verson which took the end screen (to be continued) boss ship and created an extra tlb fight at the end of hard mode. Or even made a fan made sequel (using the same sprites) and use the boss in there.

Recca is awesome. The official OST has a psytrancey medley of music from the game that starts with a choral remix of the opening theme.
