SNES Lagoon....
I've seen this described as "a poor man's Ys game", but the combat looks to be a lot more action oriented then the first two Ys games-ie, you actually slash with your sword rather then running into enemies to attack them.
What do you all think?

Say what?! No, sorry but no, Lagoon is crap, and whoever calls this game more action oriented than Ys, either hasn't played Ys or he's really rotten in his brain...dave4shmups wrote:...but the combat looks to be a lot more action oriented then the first two Ys games...

I too had Lagoon, keyword "had". In fact it was given away to me by a friend of mine and this was around 10 years ago, for free.
This game is nothing special and basically feels stifled as a result of the awful striking distance. It's a ho-hum game and unless you can find it for less than $2, it's not worth it nor should it be.

Most of your time playing Lagoon is going to be spent grinding the same foes over and over again just so you can take a little bit more damage before dying.
You can save nearly anywhere but I bet the designers did that as an excuse for the atrocious bosses(huge guys that ruin your crap if you touch them + tiny sword/weakpoint = headaches) and insta-death jumping puzzles(ughghghghhh).
Besides you want more action just play Ys 2. The boss-fights are practically 2D shooters.

Well, I actually enjoy level grinding in any RPG.PepsimanVsJoe wrote:Most of your time playing Lagoon is going to be spent grinding the same foes over and over again just so you can take a little bit more damage before dying.

I thought there was a Japan-only sequel to this game, but it's been a long, long time since I've thought about this game at all. Could be wrong.

Not to my knowledge. I do remember some pretty rampant rumors about sequels back then though. I remember rumors of sequels to Crystalis (on Neo Geo no less) and Magician Lord.Cthulhu wrote:I thought there was a Japan-only sequel to this game, but it's been a long, long time since I've thought about this game at all. It's really too bad that there was never a sequel to Crystalis, because it's awesome. I like Magician Lord too, but not as much.No_not_like_Quake wrote:Not to my knowledge. A sequel to Crystalis on NG would RULE. Sigh.No_not_like_Quake wrote:Not to my knowledge. I do remember some pretty rampant rumors about sequels back then though. Agreed but I wonder how they would have gone about it. Action RPG wouldn't have made much sense for an arcade game. Maybe it would have been an AES home exclusive, dunno. This was pre-Neo Geo CD AFAIR.
Anyway, I remember it being listed in a few of those import ads at the back of old magazines. I wonder where they got there info from?

The Neo Geo arcade units and the AES both had memory cards. You could also go the password route, as Konami did.No_not_like_Quake wrote:Action RPG wouldn't have made much sense for an arcade game.
That's even crazier. Only the CD system allowed them to release games like the Sam Spirits RPG. Although, home users always have subsidized the production costs of the cartridge format, and SS RPG's production costs can't have been too much lower than a cartridge's.Maybe it would have been an AES home exclusive, dunno.
Another vote for SoulBlazer - what I played of it was decent-ish.
Although maybe I'm the wrong person to ask about these things, since I like Light Crusader.
